Secretary's Report for 1998
The main talking point of the 1998 eason was unfortunately the bad weather which affected so many games and was eventually crucial on the last day of the season. The weather also made it unpleasant for spectators, players and umpires at many games but there was still plenty of good cricket played.
Chorley again progressed well in the Abbot Ale Cup reaching the National Quarter - Finals before losing to the eventual winner Doncaster Town.
We did not have a representative in the Final of the Lancashire Cup for the first time for several years although Kendal reached the Semi-Final.
Our League team won the Manchester Evening News Inter - League Competition beating the Bolton League in the Final while the Under 18 League team also won the corresponding Inter - League title.
The League title was not decided until the final day of the season when three clubs had a chance, but the weather had the final word with only one game even started.
Netherfield retained the title with Chorley runners up for the fourth consecutive season and Leyland DAF having a good season finishing in third spot. In the cup competitions Kendal defeated Chorley in the Vaux Samson Cup Final while Netherfield beat Chorley in the Vaux Bitter Cup Final.
In the Second Division Fleetwood retained their title with Morecambe runners - up. In the Blackledge Trophy Final Lancaster beat Fleetwood while Morecambe defeated Leylad DAF in the Latus Trophy Final.
Leading run maker was the Morecambe professional Steven Pope with 989 runs followed by the consistent Kendal player Terry Hunte with 802 runs. The leading wicket taker was Marcus Sharp the Blackpool professional with 53 wickets followed by Eldine Baptiste (St Annes) 51 and Steve Pallett (Leyland) and Craig Atkins (Netherfield) both with 50.
Congratulations to Duncan Catterall of Leyland DAF for making his debut for Worcestershire and Preston's Atul Sachdeva for his performances for Leicestershire 2nd XI.
We thank our sponsor Vaux Breweries for their continued support as we could not effectively function without them. Our Junior Section received sponsorship from the National Westminster Bank and we are grateful for their support.
John and Judith Richardson have again ensured the publication of our results through the various national and local newspapers, local radio and the Ceefax service.
Our sponsors are delighted with all the effort to increase the publicity of our League and we thank everybody who has been involved.
Our umpires are again to be thanked for an excellent season especially with the bad weather to contend with. We must thank all the club scorers and officals for their hard work.
At the Annual General Meeting Ken Tattersall who held the joint Treasurer/Secretary role for one year reverted to Treasurer with John Cooper being appointed League Secretary.
Best wishes to the players for a good season hopefully in sunny weather which the spectators will welcome.
