Secretary's Report for 1993
Last season was one of the most successful in the first forty year history of the Vaux Northern League.
At Inter-League level the League XI, skillfully managed by Alan Wilson, won the Manchester Evening News Inter-League Knockout Cup by defeating the North Lancashire League XI at Middleton C C.
We hereby thank Steve Wharton and the Manchester Evening News team and the League Executive for their help and support.
In the Bass Lancashire Cricket Association Trophy, Lancaster C C, who are to be congratulated, defeated Rochdale C C, fairly convincingly in the final at Old Trafford, thus maintaining our League's successful domination of this competition.
Grateful thanks are due to Ken Standring and the LCA Executive for their enthusiastic support.
At League level, the two Kendal town clubs had their best season for several years.
Kendal C C, ably led by Chairman Ray Lee and well captained by John Moyes, were Champions for the first time since 1959.
Fellow Kendalians, Netherfield C C, were Runners-up, the title only being decided on the last match of the season.
Netherfield also won the Cumbria Cricket Association Knockout Cup.
Leyland C C, with professional West Indies Test batsman Gordon Greenidge, won the Theakston Best Bitter Trophy by defeating Morecambe C C in a closely contested Final at Woodhill Lane.
The Theakston Old Peculiar Trophy was won by Blackpool C C in an even closer Final at St Annes C C.
In the Second Division, Fleetwood C C were Champions, and Netherfield C C were again Runners-up, with the outcome again decided on the last match of the season.
Netherfield C C also won the Blackledge Trophy by defeating Darwen C C in a replayed Final following a tied game at Parkside Road, the same two clubs feached the Final of the Latus Trophy, this time Darwen successfully beating Netherfield again at their Birch Hall Ground.
This year we will have a Third Division of the League and sincere thanks go out to Gary Woof and his Sub-Committee for their admirable work in formulating this important development.
It is hoped next year we will see a full compliment of our clubs participating in this Division, as it is believed that it will contribute greatly to our Junior cricket success.
A full report on our Junior Cricket has been made elsewhere by Clive Henderson, so suffice it to say the League extends its grateful thanks to Clive and Sylvia for their continued support. We also wish them a successful Tour of South Africa with their Cricket 2000 Junior Tourists.
At this juncture, I would welcome on board our two new Sponsors: Vaux Breweries Plc will sponsor our Senior Cricket and the National Westminster Bank Plc will sponsor our Junior Cricket.
We extend our grateful thanks to Mike Berryman and Sheila Bennett respectively and look forward to working with them both over the next three years.
We encourage all our Clubs and Players to support both our sponsors whenever possible.
Once again, we were very fortunate to have the full co-operation of our Umpires Federation who maintained their usual high standards, often in difficult circunstances.
We hereby acknowledge the work done on our behalf by the Umpires and entreat all Clubs and Players to continue to follow our Code of Conduct, thereby making the Umpire's work easier and more enjoyable.
Support was again forthcoming from all the Local Radio Stations, Local Newspapers and Cable Television Stations and we gratefully acknowledge all the coverage given by everyone.
In particular, Radio Lancashire with our own Don Ormerod deserves a very special vote of thanks.
On behalf of the League Executive I would like to congratulate Andrew Flintoff and the St Annes Club on Andrew being granted a contract with the Lancashire County Cricket club following several years representative Cricket at England Junior Level. We wish Andrew continued success.
Finally, may I thank all Club Players and Officials, the League Committee Representatives and the League Executive for their active support during the last year and wish you all continued success and an enjoyable 1994 season
David Smalley Honary League Secretary
