Secretary's Report for 1988

After the exciting finish to the 1987 season, this season was a one horse race from mid way through as Blackpool gained such a commanding lead that the only speculation was who were going to be the Runners-up.
The struggle was between Lancaster and Preston but was decided with two matches to go by Preston taking the Runners-up spot.

It was certainly the year for both Blackpool and Preston for both teams fought out the Finals of the Matthew Brown and Slalom Lager Trophies with Preston being victors in both contests.

Although Blackpool were unsuccessful in our League Cups they were certainly top dogs in the Cockburn Knockout Cup, for they won through to the Semi-Final of this years National Knockout and were one game short of playing at Lords in the Final.

Once again a Northern League side has won the Cumbrian Cup, with Netherfield doing the honours this year.

If Lancaster were disappointed with the First teams results they were cock-a-hoop with the performance of their Second team who won all the League Trophies.
The League they won by a large margin from Morecambe and they won easily in both the Blackledge Trophy against Kendal and the Latus Trophy against Morecambe.

The performance of the League team in the Inter-League was poor this year being beaten comprehensibly by a young Bolton League side.
Possibly the selectors will bear this in mind next season.

Indiscipline on the field seemed to be prevalent this year and I feel that all the Clubs should take note of the Chairman's remarks at our A.G.M. concerning the responsibility of all Club Officials in maintaining good discipline within their clubs and on the field of play before it becomes harmful to the League.

I would like to thank all our Umpires for their dedication to the game and League throughout last season and also all the scorers who give up their time for this non glamorous and exacting job.

Let's hope that the 1989 season will be more evenly contested and that all games are played in a hard but sportsman like spirit.

My final thanks which I am sure is joined by all the League and Club Officials is to our sponsors Matthew Brown Plc. who have substantially increased their sponsorship to our League this season.

H F Creasy, Hon Secretary
