SRI LANKAN SIGNS ON AT ERNEST PASS
Nishad Tharanga Paranavitana |
Barrow have today confirmed the signing of Sri Lankan Tharanga Paranavitana as their new professional for the 2015 season.
Tharanga is a tall, upright opening batsman who came into prominence during the Emerging Team Trophy in Sri Lanka in 2003.
A run of consistent scores on the domestic scene followed, but it was Paranavitana's career-best 236 off 392 balls that helped Sinhalese SC clinch the 2007-08 Premier League Tier A title which furthered his opportunities at the international level.
He made three hundreds during Sinhalese SC's successful campaign and finished as the leading run-getter for the season with 893 runs at 74.41, and followed up with a century and two half-centuries in the unofficial Tests that Sri Lanka A played in South Africa.
Named after that tour by coach Chandika Hathurusingha as a future prospect for Sri Lanka, Paranavitana earned a maiden Test cap in Pakistan in early 2009. He went on to play 32 times for his country
Barrow captain Daryl Wearing says "Tharanga will be a great addition to the club. We are very excited to have signed him and looking forward to him arriving. When KP got injured we wanted to ensure that we replaced him with similar quality and fortunately Tharanga was available.
He is an ex test opening batsman so will bring plenty of experience and professionalism. After scoring test runs against some of the best bowlers in the world, hopefully he will be able to adapt to the softer wickets and score plenty of runs for us. The young lads should benefit from him.
