Mohammed Jamal signs as Chorley CC's 2014 professional, watched by club chairman Peter Mockett, right, first team skipper Andy Holdsworth, back left, and senior club official Bob Yardley.

EXCITING young talent Mohammed Jamal will be Chorley Cricket Club's professional for the 2014 season.

The signature of the 24-year-old was clinched this weekend and Jamal, who was professional at Ribblesdale League big guns Read last year, said he was relishing the challenge of the forthcoming Northern Premier League campaign.

"I'm looking forward to playing in the Northern League and it should be a great challenge," he said.

"I always enjoy my cricket and like being involved all the time and I'm delighted to join Chorley."

And chairman Peter Mockett said he was very pleased the search for a new professional, which began in August last year when it was confirmed that previous pro Gaurav Dhar would not be retained in that post, has been completed successfully.

"We made the decision to essentially look for a batting professional and studied many options," he said.

Jamal is a young, developing professional who performed impressively for Read last season and is very ambitious.

"We believe he will be a great asset both on and off the field and we are delighted to welcome him to Windsor Park."

Jamal came through the ranks at his home town club Burnley and broke into the first team before moving to Read three years ago.

After a successful period as an amateur be became the club's professional last term and rose admirably to the challenge, scoring an impressive 1,173 runs.

Jamal has a reputation as an attacking right handed batsman who likes to entertain the crowd, and he can also bowl right arm medium pace and is an agile fieldsman.

He has played for the Ribblesdale League representative side and Lancashire under 19s and as a home born player is eligible to play in the National Knockout.

He is also a grade 2 qualified coach and it is planned for him to become involved in the senior and junior coaching set up at Windsor Park.

Off the field, Jamal works in the financial field and has a degree in accountancy & finance.
