THE LEWIS TOMLINSON INTERVIEW

Makinson Wants Title

David Makinson with the Readers Cup

Leyland captain David Makinson wants the title as he prepares for the new campaign with his strong Leyland side.

When I Asked Makinson about his targets for the upcoming season he said:

"Speaking from the 1st X1 point of view, our main aim is to compete for the League title, as we have for the last 2 seasons. We were very disappointed last year not to have defended the championship we won in 2010, especially as I thought we had a stronger squad than in previous years. Ultimatley, what cost us the title, was our failure to finish off 4 or 5 teams when we had them 9 wickets down. Hopefully the experience gained from last season will make us better equiped if we are faced wih the same situation again."

Makinson's side won the Readers Cup last year but when I asked David if he wants more trophies this season he replied:

"I feel we can play much better in the other competetions, even though we won the Readers Cup last season. We hope to have good runs in the 20/20 Cup, Lancashire Cup and National KO as well as trying to defend the Readers. There is no reason why we shouldn't be a good cup team. We have many all rounders who are capable of winning games with bat or ball, and have a predominantly young team (with the odd exception), which should make us a decent fielding team. Perhaps, after trying so hard to win the League games on Saturdays, we were not quite as committed when it came to the Sunday games. Once again, I hope we have learned from this."

The ex-Lancashire county player who took 31 wickets last year is also hoping Brett Pelser returns with the same form as last year he said:

"The return of Brett Pelser for his 3rd season is vital, not only from the point of view of his performances in the 1st X1, but his influence on everyone at the club. His playing record is exceptional, both in first class cricket in SA and also in the NL. He has had another good year back home this winter and I know from conversations with him, how much he's looking forward to returning to Leyland. He's a remarkable character. Very serious about his own cricket and the development of everyone at the club.He has been responsible for many of the lads, from 8 years old to the more Senior players, improving their skills and performances. What sets him apart from most Pro's, and in fact players, is that he always puts the teams performance first"
