FIXTURES 8th, 9th & 10th JULY

First versus Third at Vernon Road

St Annes wicketkeeper Duncan Whalley

The final group games in the Jamie Heywood Twenty20 Cup are completed on Friday evening preceding an interesting programme of games on Saturday and Sunday.

Morecambe's game at Lancaster was washed out last Tuesday. The captains tossed a coin to determine the result and Lancaster won 3-2. Morecambe need to beat Carnforth on Friday to ensure they win the North 2 Group and host Finals Day on Sunday 17 July. If Carnforth win the teams will all tie on four points but Morecambe have a vastly superior run-rate.

The other game involves Barrow entertaining Netherfield with Kendal having already won North 1 Group. Darwen and Blackpool are also through to the last four.

On Saturday Division One leaders St Annes are at home to third-placed Leyland in the Match of the Day. St Annes came a cropper at Chorley last Saturday with Andy Holdsworth's side moving up to second by virtue of their win by 117 runs. Chorley have no game on Saturday. The current position is: St Annes (played 14-143pts), Chorley (13-128) and Leyland (14-127).

Fourth-placed Morecambe travel to Ernest Pass to take on Barrow while fifth-placed Netherfield are at Preston. Kendal, in sixth are at home to Blackpool.

Elsewhere Fleetwood are at home to Darwen and Lancaster host Carnforth.

In Division Two leaders and reigning champions Leyland (13-164) are at home to St Annes and third-placed Blackpool (13-121) will hope to take advantage of second placed Chorley's (13-141) free date by catching up ground when they entertain Kendal.

Readers Cup quarter-finals on Sunday

On Sunday the Readers Cup reaches the quarter-final stage with four Division One ties and three in Division Two. Lancashire Colts travel to play St Annes at Vernon Road in D1, Leyland are at home to Blackpool, Netherfield play Barrow and Kendal are at home to Chorley. In D2 cup holders Chorley are at home to Kendal.

Last Sunday Morecambe lost at home to Northern in the ECB National Club Championship regional final. Northern made 267/4, Chris Tipper making 124 and a depleted Morecambe side put up a strong fight before closing on 212/8. Darwen are the League's sole remaining representatives and travel to play Prestwich on Sunday in the Group 6 Final.

The League's two remaining sides both lost in the LCB Lancashire Cup. Blackpool were defeated by six wickets at Bolton League side Greenmount while Barrow lost by nine runs at home to CLL side Rochdale despite a magnificent 139 from pro Pieter Malan.

Netherfield were knocked out of the Cumria County Cup, beaten by six wickets at Workington.

Cumberland lost their MCCA Trophy Semi-Final against Berkshire by 58 runs at Falkland CC. Morecambe's Chris Williams took a county one day record of 6/49.

The other players are Gary Pratt (captain), James Lowe, Chris Thompson and Marcus Sharp.

Next Friday Netherfield's Alex Atkinson captains a Northern League U-21s XI against the MCC at Kendal CC, the game starting at 11-30am.

Barrow pro Pieter Malan leads the D1 batting charts with 759 runs at an average of 84.33, followed by Leyland's Brett Pelser (591 at 65.63) and Luis Reece (532 at 66.50). St Annes' Atiq Uz-Zaman (511 runs at 42.58) and Preston captain Lukman Vahaluwala (509 at 36.36) have also topped 500 runs in league games.

Vahaluwala has also captured 42 wickets at 13.19, his haul bettered by just two professionals, St Annes' Dinuka Hettiarachchi (57 wickets) and Morecambe's Anwar Ali (43).
