Chris D'Leny takes over from Daryl Wearing as
Barrow First XI captain as the Ernest Pass outfit prepare for
the 2011 season.
The popular Wearing stood down from the
skipper's role after leading Barrow to runners-up spot in the
Furness Building Society Northern Premier Cricket League
(incorporating Readers Cricket Balls) in 2010.
Family reasons were behind Wearing's decision
but he will still be available for First XI selection and
remains a key part of the Barrow side.
D'Leny was Wearing's vice-captain and the
wicketkeeper-batsman was seen as the obvious choice to take
over. A hard-hitting left-handed batsman who has represented
Cumberland, D'Leny has bounced back to top form after missing
the entire 2008 season due to a knee injury.
D'Leny batted outstandingly in Barrow's
thrilling 10 runs win over eventual champions Leyland at Fox
Lane last August. He made 51 out of Barrow's total of 94 which
proved decisive as Leyland were then dismissed for 84 in one
the stand-out games of last season. The
23-year-old continues the recent trend of clubs appointing
young captains after Kendal announced that 22-year-old Chris
Miller will take over the role at Shap Road.
Meanwhile Ian Allington succeeds Phil Renney as
Second XI captain for the forthcoming season. Club stalwart
Allington was seen as the ideal person to bring through
Barrow's younger players after Renney resigned his position
due to work commitments. A first-team regular for the last two
decades and a heavy runs-scorer for the club Allington made
his decision to concentrate on the important role and step
down from First XI cricket.
Barrow are believed to be in the final stages of
agreeing terms for a new professional in 2011 to replace the
outgoing Pasan Wanasinghe.
But they have suffered a blow losing the
services of left-handed opening batsman Jonathan Miles, who
broke the club's Northern League amateur batting record in
each of the last two seasons. Miles has left Barrow to join
Kendal.
Darren Clark has also left Barrow, the talented
right-handed Cumberland County batsman having returned to his
old club Cleator
