Meanwhile, Cumberland fought back well on the first day of their three-day MCCA Championship fixture at Mildenhall against Suffolk, Barrow all rounder Liam Livingstone leading the way with his first five wicket haul for the County.

The Lancashire Academy squad member, who has just completed his A Level exams bowled unchanged to take 5/59 from 17 overs after entering the attack with Suffolk openers Hassan Adnan and Tom Huggins well set.

The opening pair added 227 in 68 overs- a record first wicket stand against Cumberland- but Livingstone helped keep Cumberland in contention in the sweltering heat.

Suffolk closed their 90 overs on 339/6 with Cumberland ending the day on 46/0 after 19 overs, Kendal's Jonathan Miles 15 not out.

With Justin Bishop unavailable Huggins was Suffolk's stand-in captain and he elected to bat on winning the toss on a hot and sunny morning. Huggins and Adnan made steady progress against a testing new ball attack of Richard Gleeson (Blackpool) and Marcus Sharp, backed up by seamers Chris Williams (Morecambe) and Liam Watkinson.

Cumberland bowled and fielded tightly in the oppressive heat but by lunch the pair had progressed to 98/0 after 35 overs, Huggins on 43 and Adnan 46. Huggins and Adnan virtually matched each other shot for shot and just after 3-30pm Huggins was first to three figures, cutting Livingstone for a single. He hit 13 fours and faced 197 balls, out of a score of 209 in making his eighth Championship century for Suffolk.

Adnan reached his sixth Championship hundred for Suffolk sixteen minutes later with a single off Watkinson. The former Derbyshire batsman faced 186 balls and hit 13 fours, out of a score of 227.

But no sooner had he reached his milestone Adnan was out, superbly caught above his head by James Smith at long on to give off-spinner Livingstone his first wicket; Suffolk 227/1 in the 68 th over.

Livingstone bowled with control and confidence and soon accounted for Martyn Cull, smartly taken down the leg-side by wicketkeeper Ikram Ullah (Morecambe). Scott Harvey was then superbly run out by Gleeson going for a second run; and when Ben France was caught at backward square leg by Sharp off Livingstone, Suffolk had slipped to 249/4.

Huggins and Chris Warn then added 43 off 38 balls as Suffolk pushed for runs before Huggins' marathon innings was ended. He was trapped leg before by Livingstone for 148 off 257 balls in 311 minutes; an innings which contained 16 fours and one six.

Warn then took the attack to Cumberland and hit 47 off 35 balls, including three successive sixes off Sharp. He was finally out in the last over, smartly caught by Watkinson to give Livingstone his fifth wicket.

Cumberland could be well pleased with their efforts in the testing conditions; Sharp shouldered the burden with 24 overs for 93, Gleeson bowled 15 overs for 57, Williams nine overs for 28 and Watkinson 12 overs for 49.

Off-spinner James Lowe bowled a tidy 13-over spell for 47 runs before sixth bowler Livingstone entered the attack to good effect.

Play will resume at 11am on Monday.
