Dramatic Derby win for Kendal

Dodds and Parkin the Kendal heroes

Netherfield pro Ben Laughlin bowls Gary Baker

Holders Netherfield suffered defeat in a dramatic Kendal derby as they began their defence of the Jamie Heywood Twenty20 Cup sponsored by Latham Baxendale.

Chris Parry's side looked to be in command as they reduced the home side to 32 for 5 and then 61 for 8 under glowering skies at Shap Road.

Nathan Chambers, MOTM in the 2010 Final against Blackpool, picked up the key early wicket of Cumberland opener Jon Miles, caught by Ben Barrow in the deep.

And John Mason grabbed the prize scalp of Kiwi international Jamie How, the Kendal pro, caught and bowled for 11.

Netherfield's Australian pro Ben Laughlin weighed in with the wickets of Gary Baker and Jack White, Mason accounted for Nick Lewthwaite and Marc Hadwin had Gareth Ashburner caught behind.

Shane Dixon, Netherfield's 2 nd XI captain then claimed the wickets of Kendal captain Chris Miller and Shane Hyland as the cup holders looked in command.

But Kendal's Second XI captain Paul Dodds and Stu Parkin had other ideas, adding 61 in a defiant ninth wicket stand.

Parkin smashed two fours and two sixes as he made 22 off just 11 balls before becoming Dixon's third victim in a spell of 3/30. Dodds finished unbeaten with an invaluable 37 off 42 balls with five fours as Kendal mustered a respectable 116/9 in their 20 overs.

Netherfield conceded no less than 17 wides, the third highest scorer for the home side and a statistic that came back to haunt them.

With the rain clouds threatening Kendal's bowlers proved difficult to get away, backed as they were by excellent fielding. Marc Brown made most progress until he was bowled by Lewthwaite for 21 off 24 balls.

Fellow opener Ben Haddrick was bowled by Parkin and Dixon pinned leg before by how as play was halted by rain with Netherfield 54/3 off 11.3 overs.

When play resumed Netherfield's revised target was 93 off 16 overs with the proviso that Kendal were winners when they took the seventh wicket.

The task of hitting 39 off 27 balls proved beyond the visitors in gloomy light and they lost wickets quickly. Lewthwaite and white claimed the wickets of Alex Atkinson and Mason respectively; then How ended the game in the 16th over with the wickets of John Huck and Chris Parry.

Netherfield were 72/7 off 15.2 overs when Kendal were declared winners on run-rate at 9-13pm.

Kendal have won their opening two games in the group and will be keenly watching Netherfield's home game against Barrow on Thursday.
