Carnforth Cricket Club have been rewarded for their huge improvement in pitch and outfield standards by being awarded one of the prestigious fixtures of the calendar.

Under ECB regulations for Premier Leagues Umpires rate pitch and outfield standards across a wide-ranging marking system; the findings are collated and required to be published twice-yearly.

Carnforth CC achieved an increase of 16.6pc in Pitch rankings and 16.8 in Outfield rankings during the 2011 season. Their reward is to host the league's prestigious annual fixture against the MCC in 2012; as before an Under21s side will be representing the NPCL.

The appointment of Peter Robinson as Head Groundsman paid dividends for Carnforth CC with the Lodge Quarry ground rising to third in overall Pitch rankings with 83pc, just behind Netherfield (85.7pc) and St Annes (84.6pc).

Kendal also attained an 80pc ranking, a rise of nearly 9pc on 2010.

Overall the league clubs averaged 75.8pc, an increase of 2.2pc on 2010.

Barrow CC led the way on Outfield markings with a ranking of 92.3pc, an increase of 7.3pc on last year. The Ernest Pass ground, lovingly tendered by Ken Robinson and his team has become a regular venue for Cumberland CCC.

Barrow CC were one of seven clubs to rank above 80pc and the overall league average rose 1.8pc to 79.3pc.

Carnforth will host the NPCL Under21s fixture against the MCC on Friday 13 July 2012 (11.30pm). This fixture was inaugurated this season and resulted in a hard-fought win for the league side captained by Netherfield's Alex Akinson. The fixture was staged expertly by Kendal CC to whom the league extended its appreciation. Northern Premier Cricket League 2011 season
