Crucial weekend for Leyland

Cup specialists Kendal chase Readers Cup glory

Kendal captain Chris Miller leads Kendal in the Readers Cup final

Leyland face an exciting weekend of action in the Furness Building Society Northern Premier Cricket League (incorporating Readers Cricket Balls) while Division One leaders St Annes take a week off.

St Annes (played 21-218pts) lead Leyland (20-196) by 22pts with Chorley (20-179) in third and Netherfield (21-177) fourth.

This weekend is St Annes' free date so defending Champions Leyland will attempt to make up ground when they visit Lodge Quarry to take on a resurgent Carnforth side fresh from two successive wins.

Chorley entertain Preston and Netherfield are at home to Blackpool.

In Division Two defending Champions Leyland (19-229) lead Chorley (19-209) by 20pts with five games left. Blackpool (19-199) are third.

Leyland Seconds are at home to Carnforth and Chorley visit West Cliff to play Preston. Blackpool Seconds' game with Netherfield is delayed until Sunday due to the county game at Stanley Park.

On Sunday Leyland are at home to Kendal in the final of the Readers Cup.

Kendal are becoming cup specialists having already won the Jamie Heywood twenty20 Cup and made progress in the Barbados Cockspur Twenty20 competition.

They have a host of match-winners in their side and skipper Chris Miller who bowled Kendal to a resounding league win at Fox lane last Saturday is in top form.

Kiwi Test star Jamie How, Cumberland opener Jon Miles and league legend Terry Hunte can all win a game on their own.

Leyland have suffered a blow with key all-rounder Luis Reece unavailable due to commitments with the Unicorns.

Leyland last won the cup in 1993 while Kendal's last triumph was in 1998.

Cumberland play their final Minor Counties Championship match of the season at Barrow CC on Sunday against Northumberland. The three-day game starts each day at 11am. Chris Williams (Morecambe), Alex Atkinson (Netherfield) and Liam Livingstone (Barrow) are all in the Cumberland side. Former Blackpool professional Marcus Sharp plays the final game of an illustrious Minor Counties career with the county stretching back to 1994.

Please note this is the last weekend of 1pm starts in the league. From next Saturday 27 August games commence at 12-30pm.
