Barrow Cricket Club have announced their new professional to replace long-serving Pasan Wanasinghe. The popular Sri Lankan left the club last season after four years and is succeeded by a talented young South African.
Highly-rated Pieter Malan is due to arrive at Ernest Pass in time for the start of the season for his first professional engagement in the UK
Malan, aged 21, is a top-order batsman top order batsman for the Titans franchise who also captains Northerns when his Titans commitments allow. A former South African Schools and Under-19s representative who has also been a member of the national academy, Malan has an impressive pedigree.
Already in first-class cricket he has scored 2,437 runs at an average of 39.95 including six hundreds. In List A One-Day matches he has scored 1,469 runs at an average of 58.76 including six centuries. He also bowls right arm medium pace.
Recently Malan made 158 batting for Northerns against Eastern Province at Pretoria playing alongside former Fleetwood pro Rassie van der Dussen and ex-Lancaster pro Mario Olivier.
Born in Nelspruit, Transvaal Malan made his first-class debut in 2007 and was a member of the South African side that reached the final of the Under-19s World Cup in 2008, losing to India in Kuala Lumpur.
Commenting on the signing Barrow CC Director of Cricket Ian Sharp said: "I am excited to be working with a South African again having played alongside Andre Nel and Pierre de Bruyn at Millom. As a club we felt a young hungry South African would fit in perfectly with our very talented young side. After finishing second to Leyland last year we wanted to maintain the momentum. We have lost Darren Clark who has gone back to Cleator while Jonathan Miles has gone to Kendal and so it was important we recruited a top order batsmen, who will also contribute with the ball."
Sharp, who is also Cumberland's team manager also reported that County players Greg Platten and Graham Dawson will be staying at Barrow despite what he termed "a lot of interest from other clubs in the league." Sharp is also talking to the up and coming players in the Cumberland frame with a view to them coming to Ernest Pass.
"Newly appointed First XI captain Chris D'Leny has already been in touch with Pieter and they have discussed their plans for the season," Sharp added. "Chris said they got on like a house on fire and we all can't wait for the start of the season."
In another move Club Chairman Ray Mowat, a former County player who announced his playing retirement last season has added another title to his portfolio. Mowat will be the official Club Coach working alongside D'Leny and Second XI captain Ian Allington.
