Preseason friendly review

Brilliant Bovis puts Carnforth to the sword

Carnforth 2011 version line up for the camera

Warton Captain Ricky Nelson earned the bragging rights in his family after steering the Westmorland League Champions to a thrilling four wickets win over local rivals Carnforth in a preseason friendly.

Up against son Ryan and brother Darren, both key members of the Carnforth side, the Warton skipper came to the crease with his side still needing two to win with five balls remaining. He edged his second ball from Carnforth pro Gareth Pedder through the slips for four to seal a tense victory.

Phil Bovis, the Westmorland League's best batsman underpinned Warton's successful chase of their 210 victory target with an outstanding innings of 120. Bovis, who had a brief spell with Carnforth at the start of last season before deciding to return to Warton, gave a batting master-class on a gloriously sunny day, adding 120 for the second wicket with James Rafferty (41). He reached his century out of 168 for 2 and was finally dismissed with just three needed for victory, brilliantly stumped down the leg-side by Tom Barnfield off skipper Adam Hornby. Adam Cowperthwaite took three for 46.
