Morecambe CC have confirmed their professional
for the 2011 season. Pakistan paceman Anwar Ali will replace
the retired Mandla Mashimbyi as the club's paid man for the
forthcoming season.
The 22-year-old Karachi born Anwar played for
Colne in the Lancashire League in 2009 and 2010. In his first
season he scored 371 runs for Colne at an average of 23.20 and
collected 76 wickets at 12.10.
Included in that tally were no less than ten
five-wicket hauls, with stand-out spells of seven for 39
against Rishton, seven for 40 against Lowerhouse and seven for
57 against Nelson. He also took six for 26 against Burnley
including a hat-trick.
In 2010 Anwar scored 516 runs at 27.10 and took
57 wickets at 18.10 in a side that finished next to bottom in
the Lancashire League.
But in the Worsley Cup he inspired Colne to
their shock victory over eventual champions Ramsbottom, taking
a match-winning five for 22 in the final at Acre Bottom. Four
of his wickets were clean-bowled.
He took 17 wickets in the cup games and hit 81
and took four for 26 in Colne's semi-final win over Bacup, a
match that stretched out over three days due to the
weather.
Morecambe CC captain Mark Woodhead said: "As a
priority we were looking at a strike bowler for next season
and Anwar fits the bill. We have done our research and he
comes highly recommended by players that have played with him
and against him. He already has two years' experience in the
local leagues behind him and we are looking to seeing him in
action for Morecambe next season."
A former Pakistan Cricket Academy product, he
played a pivotal role in Pakistan's victory over India in the
final of the 2006 Under 19s World Cup in Colombo, taking five
for 35.
