Cricket League (incorporating Readers Cricket Balls) leaders
Leyland saw their 28-point lead over Barrow reduced to 17
after last Saturday's games.
While Leyland struggled to a losing draw at
defending champions St Annes, Barrow earned a maximum 15-point
haul from their trip to Kendal to keep up the pressure.
This Saturday Leyland entertain Kendal while
Barrow host Fleetwood. And in potentially the game of the
season Leyland are at home to Barrow on Bank Holiday
Monday.
Leyland (played 21-234pts) then visit Preston
before being at home to Darwen on the final day of the
season.
Barrow (21-217) are at Chorley before playing
Preston at Ernest Pass.

St Annes (21-196), Darwen (21-186) and Blackpool
(21-172) are next in line.
In Division Two Leyland (20-216) lead the way
with four games to play with Blackpool (20-198) 18 points
behind followed by Chorley (20-184) and Darwen (20-173).
Morecambe captain Tommy Clough has decided to
stand down and Mark Woodhead will captain the side for the
rest of the season.
Popular South African pro Mandla
Mashimbyi will leave the club after the weekend's games to
return to South Africa.
Darwen won the Readers Cup on Sunday defeating
Morecambe in a magnificent final. Their professional Mohammad
Zaman Khan leads the Division One run charts with 925 at an
average of 51.39 and has re-signed for a second season at
Birch Hall.
Zaman Khan is chasing Scott Hookey's club record
of 1,078 runs established in 1988. Netherfield pro Nick Kruger
has scored 798 runs, Fleetwood's in-form pro Matt Frith 736
and Leyland pro Brett Pelser 663. Chorley's JJ Smuts hit 747
runs before leaving the club at the end of July.
In the bowling stakes St Annes pro Dinuka
Hettiarachchi has taken 80 wickets at 10.93 with Barrow's
Pasan Wanasinghe second on 66 wickets at 11.39. Kendal pro
Ross McMillan has 61 wickets to his name.
Carnforth pro Gareth Pedder has broken the
club's Northern League bowling record for a professional,
taking 45 wickets in his second season at Lodge Quarry to
surpass the 42 taken by Irfan Fazil in 2007. Warren Quinn's
club record of 53 set last year is now in his sights.

The battle for the Castle Awards for amateurs is
reaching the latter stages. In the batting stakes Atiq
Uz-Zaman staked his claim to retain his title after scoring a
fine century for St Annes against Leyland. He has hit 866 runs
but Barrow's Jon Miles (784) and Greg Platten (699) are still
in contention. Preston's Adam Parker (658) and Kendal's Terry
Hunte (590) have also had fine seasons.
Kendal's Chris Miller needs one wicket to equal
the club's bowling record held jointly by Jiva Malik and Brian
Evans having taken 51 wickets in 2010. But Ben Simm
(Lancaster) and Darwen's talented teenager Kamran Anwar are
pushing him close having both taken 48 wickets.
Miller will also have to sit out the final round
of games as Kendal have a bye. Preston captain Lukman
Vahaluwala (42) is next in line with Leyland's captain David
Makinson and all-rounder Luis Reece on 38 apiece followed by
Graham Dawson (Barrow) on 36.
Barrow wicketkeeper Chris D'Leny has snared 32
victims and has a clear lead over Leyland's Matthew Watkinson
(26) and Netherfield's John Huck (25).
Fleetwood's Ryan Smith is top fielder with 17
catches ahead of Luis Reece on 14.
In Division Two Chorley's Stu Naden leads the
run charts with 711 followed by Leyland's Dan Hall (690) and
Kendal's Donovan Du Plessis (510). John Pallett's Leyland club
record of 793 runs established in 1991 is in Hall's sights.
The Blackpool pair of Ross Parker (46 wickets)
and captain Kevin Reid (40) are vying with Morecambe's Nick
Milner (42) for the bowling award.
Blackpool's James Smith has 28 wicketkeeping
victims and leads Barrow's Tom Penny and Leyland's Stu Parker
who both have 22 respectively. Preston's Yasin Patel is top
fielder with 12 catches.

Last Sunday Netherfield bowed out of the
Cockspur Rum Twenty20 Cup when then they lost to Bootle in the
North-West Final. The league's Latham Baxendale Twenty20 Cup
holders restricted Bootle to 122 for 6, captain David
Snellgrove top scoring with 51 and wicketkeeper Neil Williams
making 41.
But Netherfield were bowled out for 79 in reply,
Snellgrove taking four for 11.
On Sunday Chorley CC stage their centenary game
as press officer Tony Dawber reports: "The celebrations to
mark 100 glorious years of cricket at Windsor Park reach their
peak next Sunday, August 29.
"The picturesque home of Chorley Cricket Club
will host a special centenary game between the wonderful team
which was twice national champions in the 1990s and the
current Chorley first XI.
"Roland Horridge, who was skipper on all three
occasions when Chorley reached Lord's in the Abbot Ale
National Cup, the first two of which ended in victory, has
recruited a side containing almost all the great players who
achieved those wonderful wins at the home of cricket.
"Horridge will lead the side himself and his
team includes the likes of legendary big hitter Neil Senior,
classy batsmen James Fazackerley, Neil Bannister and Nigel
Heaton, and all rounders such as Gordon Lee and Rex Purnell,
who were both selected for an all time great Chorley XI in the
club's Centenary Brochure.
'The Legend' himself, the great Keith
Eccleshare, will also be there and it is hoped he will take
the field at some point.
"There will be refreshments and a full bar
available all afternoon and other attractions including a
raffle so bring the family down for what should be a wonderful
afternoon when many memories will be revived.
The game starts at 1.30pm and will be 35 overs a
side.
