Pelser re-signs for leaders Leyland for 2011

Leyland pro Brett Pelser has signed on again at Fox Lane

Furness Building Society Northern Premier Cricket League (incorporating Readers Cricket Balls) leaders Leyland have set off for their mid season tour of Malta in good heart. With a 29-point lead over defending champions St Annes, Leyland have been given an added boost as they sit out this weekend's games.

Popular South African professional Brett Pelser, who has hit 559 runs at 55.90 so far this season has re-signed for the 2011 campaign. "Brett has made an important contribution in his first year at Fox Lane," said Leyland captain David Makinson. "As well as his performances on the field, he is heavily involved with coaching all the club teams from under 11s through to the first team and we are delighted that he will be staying to continue his work with us".

Leyland (played 16-186pts) have played one game more than nearest challengers St Annes (15-157) and Barrow (15-150) with Blackpool (16-137) in fourth. Morecambe (15-118), Darwen (15-115) and Lancaster (16-110) are all chasing Lancashire Cup places.

This Saturday, St Annes visit Birch Hall, scene of their dramatic last day win last season that secured the title.
Barrow are at Netherfield and Blackpool visit Carnforth.

Chorley pro JJ Smuts plays his last game for the club having scored 713 league runs at 59.42 and taken 33 wickets at 21.64 when they visit Lancaster. The Chorley batting record for a professional is 719 runs established by Kiwi Stuart Duff in 1987.

In Division Two Chorley's Stu Naden, with 614 runs so far, has his sights on Bob Dickinson's club record of 721 runs set in 1993.

Barrow professional Pasan Wanasinghe has broken the club's bowling record in Northern League cricket. He has taken 54 wickets in league games, surpassing the 53 taken by Rawl Lewis in 2005.

Preston host Morecambe with Fleetwood, now under the captaincy of Matt Clark are at home to Kendal.

A reminder that the following weekend (Saturday 31st July, Sunday 1st August) sees a double programme of league games.

On Sunday Preston defend their Twenty20 Cup when they host Finals Day in the Latham Baxendale Twenty20 Cup competition.
Preston play Blackpool in the first semi-final at West Cliff (11am) with Netherfield, last season's beaten finalists playing Lancaster in the second semi-final at 2pm.
The final is scheduled for 5pm.

A 12-page colour programme has been produced for the event priced £1 and admission is £2 adults and £1 concessions.

League President Brian Standing will present the cup and there will be medals for the winning team's players and runners-up and a Man of the Match award for the final.

Also on Sunday Barrow chase a place in the Cumbrian Cup final when they play Whitehaven at Ernest Pass in the semi-final while Carnforth visit Furness for their quarter-final tie. Both ties have a 1.30pm start.

There was no play in the scheduled three-day Minor Counties Championship game at Barrow between Cumberland and Cambridgeshire due to rain.
