TEAM NEWS AND PREVIEW LEAGUE AND CUP 7/8 JUNE 2008

Leaders Leyland face Preston derby test

Leyland's opening batsman Karl Cross is in action at Preston on Saturday

3D Sports Northern Premier League leaders Leyland have a local derby to contend with on Saturday when they travel the short distance to West Cliff to take on Preston.
Leyland are still unbeaten though they saw their lead at the top cut to nine points at the weekend as they clung on for a draw at Netherfield with seven wickets down.
Preston, meanwhile, had a hard-earned win at Fleetwood with Lukman Vahaluwala and pro Bilal Asad each taking four wickets.

Netherfield pro Callum Ferguson scored a fine hundred last Saturday

Second placed Kendal travel to reigning champions St Annes with Kevin Howarth in outstanding form with bat and ball. But the team to watch could be Blackpool whose skipper Paul Danson steered them to a nerve-shredding two wicket win at Darwen. Blackpool take on Netherfield at Stanley Park with the visitors captain Chris Parry and Australian pro Callum Ferguson in record-breaking mood last Saturday as they put on an unbroken partnership of 279 against Leyland a new club record.

Carnforth pro Ryan Bailey

Fifth-placed Lancaster have a chance to make up ground on the leaders when bottom club Fleetwood visit Lune Road though Wayne Clarke's side will be heartened by a Cockspur Cup win at Barrow on Sunday. Morecambe, meanwhile, have slipped to sixth despite skipper Mark Lomas's consistent form with the bat and are just six points ahead of Saturday's visitors Carnforth.

Fleetwood pro Nisithi Rupasinghe

With pro Pasan Wanasinghe leading the way Daryl Wearing's Barrow side will be looking to build on their 15-point win over St Annes when Darwen visit the Ernest Pass Memorial Ground. Opening pair Ian Allington and Jon Miles gave Barrow a fine start last weekend with a century opening stand but John Cordingley made a welcome return to form for Darwen with a battling unbeaten half-century in their narrow defeat at home to Blackpool, when pro Atif Ashraf also passed 50.
Chorley have no game.

DIVISION ONE

BLACKPOOL v NETHERFIELD

Blackpool spokeman Andy Griffiths writes: Our 1st XI host an in-form Netherfield side with 2 changes to the side which took the field last weekend, Steven Mercer is away for the weekend, and Craig Outram (family commitments) is only available for one game at the weekend, so will play in the Cup game on Sunday. This means that young all-rounder Jamie Hogarth is promoted to bat number 4 on the back of scores of 111 not out and 61 in the 2nd XI, and 17 year-old Michael Penney is brought in to boost the lower order batting and fielding effort.
Saturday's 1st XI - Danson (capt), Darlington, Gleeson, Hogarth (A), Hogarth (J), Moore, Penney, Reece, Smith (A), Smith (J) (w/k), Weerakoon(pro)

Barrow team: D Wearing (capt), I Allinson, L Livingstone, J McMenemy (WK), P Wilcock, G Dawson, D Clark, J Miles, I Kermode, N Lauderdale, P Wanasinghe (pro).
Barrow captain Daryl Wearing reports: "Paul Wilcock is unfortunately out for the next 3 weeks with a broken finger, and Chris Brookshaw has dropped down to the seconds, but will not keep wicket due to a hand injury. Jon McMenemy comes in to keep wicket and Neil Lauderdale has been rewarded for his recent form in the 2nd team and will bat number 5.
"Hopefully we can carry on from last weekend's very good performance against St Annes and Atif will not carry on where he left off in the last match we played Darwen, when he smashed the league record.
"On Sunday we play Carnforth with Ian Allington unavailable through work commitments, Jon Mcmenemy (exams) and Neil Lauderdale (Christening), so in come Chris Brookshaw, Danny Myles and Tod Bamber who will play his first game for the 1st team this season after returning from University."

Darwen's website reports:
"Darwen take the long trip to Barrow in the Northern League this Saturday looking to overtake the team just above them in the league. Darwen had a poor run in May and are hoping that June will see them make more solid progress.
"Mark Emery returns to the team in place of Nial Burke and Yukub Bhanji is hoping to be firing on all cylinders following his recent injury"
"Skipper Andrew Cook is really pleased with the efforts of his young team and with the return to form of John Cordingley, who is now putting some good scores together" "We let the game slip away in the final few overs against Blackpool last week, but there were promising performance from our Professional, Atif and John with our young bowlers Bhanji and Anwar showing great promise. I'm confident that we will start to pick up the results we deserve very soon if we continue to put in the 110 per cent effort of the last few weeks."
