The Northern Cricket League Review

The Twenty First round of matches in the Northern Premier League 2024 season saw Fleetwood take advantage of Leyland not playing to win at St Annes. There were also wins for Blackpool against Kendal and Garstang versus Mawdesley.

Their were winning draws for Netherfield, Chorley and Longridge.

DIVISION ONE:

Blackpool v Kendal

Kendal won the toss at Stanley Park and chose to bat first and got off to a bad start losing Evan Williams caught and bowled by Richard Gleeson for 0 (2 balls), 1-1.

Finlay Richardson was the Kendal number three and with Freddie Fallows set about moving the score along, Matthew Grindley was introduced into the attack with immediate effect taking two wickets in his first over, Finaly Richardson was the first to go caught by Andrew Needham for 14 (20 balls), 26-2, new man Max Winskill followed four balls later caught by Josh Boyne for 0 (4 balls), 26-3.

Bradley Earl came in next but quickly became wicket number three for Matthew Grindley caught by Andrew Needham for 0 (4 balls), 34-4. Lewis Richardson joined Freddie Fallows and they were slowly building up the score until Josh Boyne bowled Freddie Fallows for 34 (46 balls), 56-5.

Tim Boyd replaced Fallows but with only six runs added both Boyd and Lewis Richardson were out, Matthew Grindley struck once again having Lewis Richarsdon caught by Josh Boyne for 10 (22 balls), 62-6, Tim Boyd was caught by Andrew Needham off Josh Boyne for 2 (8 balls), 62-7.

Thomas Bentley and Sam Sharp were the new batsmen with the task to try and build some kind of score, Matthew Grindley broke the partnership in taking his fifth wicket having Thomas Bentley caught by Josh Boyne for 9 (32 balls), 84-8.

Chris Miller was next in and battled but became wicket nuber six for Matthew Grindley caught by Andrew Needham for 2 (22 balls), 92-9. The Kendal innings came to an end on 103 all out in 39.5 overs when Sam Sharp who had battled away was out lbw to Josh Boyne for 18 (65 balls) with Louis Backhouse 10no (14 balls).

Matthew Grindley's figures were 6-32 from 15 overs with Josh Boyne 3-10 off 6.5, Richard Gleeson 1-31 from 12, Raveen Yasas 0-10 off 3 and Harry Birkman 0-16 from 3.

In reply Blackpool lost an early wicket Dylan Henshall caught by Evan Williams off Louis Backhouse for 6 (11 balls), 15-1. Andrew Needham joined Daniel Dixon and they took the score close to victory when Freddie Fallows bowled Andrew Needham for 24 (75 balls), 90-2.

Raveen Yasas replaced Needham and with Dixon saw the hosts home on 104-2 in 33.2 over, Daniel Dixon was 56no (105 balls) and Raveen Yasas 9no (9 balls).

For Kendal Freddie Fallows took 1-19 from 12 overs. Louis Backhouse 1-24 off 5, Lewis Richardson 0-6 from 1.2, Chris Miller 0-12 off 1, Evan Williams 0-17 from 6 and Sam Sharp 0-25 off 8.

Chorley v Euxton

Chorley won the toss at Windsor Park and elected to bat first, Zane Gilder made an early breakthrough bowling Miller Childs for 1 (3 balls) 5-1.

Harry Barclay came in at three and with Navod Paranavithana were going well until Joseph Bowden had Harry Barclay caught by Zane Gilder for 28 (47 balls), 77-2, Will Moulton was in next but was soon out lbw to Joseph Bowden for 3 (21 balls), 87-3.

Joseph Tiffin replaced Barclay but with only two runs added he lost Navod Paranavithana caught by Aneeq Hassan for 54 (72 balls), 89-4. Edwin Moulton was the new batsman and the partnership with Joseph Tiffin was 51 when Joseph Tiffin was caught by Joseph Bowden off James Bone for 21 (48 balls), 140-5

Ben Simpkins joined Moulton and they moved the score along, Zane Gilder came back into the attack and had Ben Simpkins caught by Sam Sweeney for 29 (16 balls), 183-6.

Zane Gilder claimed his third wicket new man Kieran Yould stumped by Danny Curtis for 2 (3 balls), 199-7. In next was Sam Steeple who lost his partner Edwin Moulton caught by Aneeq Hassan off Ben Houghton for 53 (83 balls), 209-8.

Chorley lost their two remailning wickets in the last of their fifty overs, Sam Steeple was caught by Daniel Barber off Zane Gilder for 16 (10 balls), 223-9, off the last ball Zane Gilder claimed his fifth wicket Matt Dawson caught and bowled for 0 (1 ball) as the hosts closed on 223 all out with Matthew Sedgman 4no (1 ball).

Zane Gilder took 5-66 from 10 overs, James Bone 2-40 off 14, Joseph Bowden 2-43 from 15, Ben Houghton 1-27 off 4, Joseph Barker 0-14 from 3 and Sam Sweeney 0-29 off 4.

The visitors got off to a steady start, the partnership broken by Will Moulton who caught and bowled Zane Nirodi for 10 (31 balls), 31-1. Sam Sweeney was number three but fell caught behind by Harry Barclay off Sam Steeple for 7 (22 balls), 59-2.

James Bone replaced Sweeney and kept the scoreboard ticking over, Aneeq Hassan was next out lbw to Sam Steeple for 49 (67 balls), 77-3, Navod Paranavithana quickly accounted for the incoming batsman Zane Gilder out caught and bowled for 0 (7 balls), 80-4.

New batsman Ben Houghton was soon out bowled by Navod Paranavithana for 4 (5 balls), 86-5. Daniel Barber joined James Bone and they took the score past the hundred, Navod Paranavithana broke the partnership bowling Daniel Barber for 11 (23 balls), 111-6.

The visitors were in trouble Max Harper was the next in and with Bone battled to save the game, disaster struck when James Bone was out caught by Edwin Moulton off Joseph Tiffin for 34 (65 balls), 128-7.

Max Harper was battling away but lost his partner Joseph Barker bowled by Sam Steeple for 1 (9 balls), 137-8. Danny Curtis was Harper's new partner and they saw the visitors close on 155-8 with Max Harper 23no (53 balls) and Danny Curtis 2no (11 balls.)

The Chorley bowling was Navod Paranavithana 3-37 from 15 overs, Sam Steeple 3-39 off 13, Joseph Tiffin 1-10 from 4, Will Moulton 1-26 off 6, Edwin Moulton 0-6 from 4, Miller Childs 0-10 off 2 and Matt Dawson 0-19 from 6.

Garstang v Mawdesley

Garstang won the toss at the Riverside Sports ground and decided to bat first, they started well the opening partnership broken by Joshua Unsworth having Tom Higson caught by Nathan Trengove for 24 (43 balls), 42-1.

Michael Walling was Imran Butt's new partner, Dominic Hendricks was brought into the attack and claimed the wicket of Imran Butt caught by Matthew Parkinson for 16 (56 balls), 67-2.

Adam Ball was the new batsman but soon became Dominic Hendricks's next victim caught by Daniel Unsworth for 5 (12 balls), 75-3. Ashton Charles joined Walling but with only three runs added he was run out by Lee Berrie for 2 (6 balls), 78-4.

Mark Walling replaced Charles and with Michael Walling took charge, their partnetship was 102 when Michael Walling was bowled by Joshua Unsworth for 81 (108 balls), 180-5.

We were now in the final overs of the innings the incoming batsman being Michael Wellings, Joshua Unsworth claimed his third wicket bowling Mark Walling for 47 (60 balls), 210-6.

Ian Walling was next in but lost his partner Michael Wellings stumped by Fyffe Dennis off Daniel Unsworth for 14 (12 balls) as Garstang closed on 210-7 in their 50 overs, Ian Walling was 7no (4 balls).

Joshua Unsworth took 3-54 from 15 overs, Dominic Hendricks 2-28 off 11, Daniel Unsworth 1-56 from 11, Matthew Parkinson 0-27 off 3 and Neil O'Malley 0-40 from 10.

The Mawdesley reply did not get off to a good start losing Daniel Unsworth lbw to Ian Walling for 6 (10 balls), 12-1.

Nathan Trengove was number three and with Fyffe Dennis looked to be making headway, disaster struck with the loss of two wickets for one run, Fyffe Dennis was the first to go caught behind by Michael Wellings off Joe Barlow for 18 (41 balls), 33-2. new batsman Dominic Hendricks quickly followed caught by Imran Butt off Ian Walling for 0 (4 balls), 34-3

Toby Ambrose joined Trengove and they had nearly doubled the score when the introduction of Ernie Collinson into the attack saw him have Nathan Trengove caught by Imran Butt for 7 (40 balls), 60-4.

Lee Berrie was the new batsman and became Ernie Collinson's next wicket caught by Ashton Charles for 14 (15 balls), 76-5. One run later Toby Ambrose fell to the Butt/Collinson combination for 25 (36 balls), 77-6.

We now had two new batsmen at the crease Ben Munslow and Joshua Unsworth, Collinson once again broke the partnership Joshua Unsworth caught by Ian Walling for 6 (10 balls), 85-7.

Matthew Parkinson came in and saw Tom Higson have Ben Munslow caught by Ernie Collinson for 9 (15 balls), 97-8, The writing was on the wall when Erin Collinson claimed his fifth wicket bowling Christopher Andrews for 0 (5 balls), 100-9.

The Mawdesley innings came to an end on 108 all out in 34.1 overs with Matthew Parkinson caught by Imran Butt off Cian Gorst for 8 (23 balls) with Neil O'Malley 6no (7 balls).

All the Garstang bowlers took a wicket with Ernie Collinson the Garstang hero with 5-25 from 10 overs, Ian Walling had 2-33 off 9, Cian Gorst 1-2 from 1.1, Joe Barlow 1-11 off 7 and Tom Higson 1-29 from 7.

Longridge v Fulwood & Broughton

Fulwood & Broughton won the toss at the Newsham Memorial ground and put the hosts into bat, the opening pair gave the hosts a fabulous foundation with a stand of 171 broken by Jon Fenton having Taariq Chiecktey caught behind by James McWilliam for 116 (85 balls), (18x4, 2x6), 171-1.

Zac Christie came in with a hard act to follow and was next out bowled by Dom Brookes for 29 (33 balls), 216-2. Luke Platt was next in but lost his partner Joshua Mullin bowled by Jon Fenton for 67 (134 balls), 233-3.

Disaster struck for new batsman Lewis Garstang run out by Brendan Morris for 1 (6 balls), 236-4. Now in the last five overs the hosts lost wickets going for the runs, Luke Platt was bowled by Jon Fenton for 10 (16 balls), 243-5. Alex Mason was caught by Muhammad Zaid off Brendan Morris for 10 (13 balls), 253-6.

Zach Proctor became wicket number four for Jon Fenton caught by Dilan Patel for 3 (5 balls), 255-7. Jake Durnell was the last success for the visitors bowled by Brendab Morris for 1 (3 balls), 258-8.

The Garstang innings closed on 264-8 in their fifty overs with Tom Howarth 8no (6 balls) and Gabriel Dowthwaite 1no (1 ball).

The Fulwood & Broughton bowling was Jon Fenton 4-60 from 14 overs, Brendan Morris 2-48 off 10, Chris Brookes 1-71 from 15, Ewen Mansford 0-32 off 6 and Lewis Wellings 0-41 from 5.

The visitors reply got off to a rocky start, Jon Fenton was out early caught by Alex Mason off Jacob Proctor for 4 (12 balls), 6-1, Number three Brendan Morris did not last long another Jacob Proctor victim caught by Jake Durnell for 6 (19 balls), 18-2.

New batsman Ben Rosbottom and Ewen Mansford set about rebuilding the innings and were going steadily along until both were out within two runs of each other, Jake Durnell had Ewen Mansford caught behind by Taariq Chiecktey for 27 (58 balls), 54-2, two runs later Ben Rosbottom was caught behind by Taariq Chiecktey off Gabriel Dowthwaite for 19 (61 balls), 56-3.

James McWilliam and Muhaamad Zaid now had the job of getting the visitors back in the game, their partnership was 89 scoring at a good rate broken with Muhammad Zaid falling caught by Zach Proctor off Alex Mason for 30 (46 balls), 141-5.

Lewis Wellings was the new batsman but he soon lost James McWilliam caught by Jake Durnell off Zach Proctor for 67 (58 balls), 159-6. There were only six overs remaining so victory was out of sight and so saving the game was the task for the remaining batsmen. Dilan Patel replaced McWilliam but was bowled by Jake Durnell for 5 (8 balls), 175-7.

There were now 22 balls left and three wickets required by the hosts for victory, Jake Durnell struck with ten balls to go having Lewis Wellings caught by Luke Platt for 15 (23 balls), 186-8. We were now in the last over and on his third ball Gabriel Dowthwaite bowled Ben Parkinson for 9 (11 balls), 186-9. Chris Brookes came to the wicket and played the last three balls to see the visitors close on 186-9 in their 50 overs.

The wickets were shared amongst the Longridge bowlers, Jake Durnell took 3-43 from 14 overs, Jacob Proctor 2-20 off 7, Gabriel Dowthwaite 2-20 from 9, Zach Proctor 1-17 off 3, Alex Mason 1-71 from 12 and Tom Howarth 0-11 of 5.

Netherfield v Settle

Settle won the toss at the Parkside Road ground and invited the hosts to bat first, openers Josh Dixon and Ben Barrow gave them a solid start, Ashen Silva was brought into the attack and had Ben Barrow caught behind by Robbie Davidson for 21 (45 balls), 44-1.

Imran Rafiq was the new batsman and with Dixon kept the scoreboard ticking over, Ashen Silva claimed his second wicket Josh Dixon lbw for 38 (77 balls), 87-2.

John Huck joined Rafiq and their partnership was 101 and into the last five overs of the innings when Imran Rafiq was caught by Benjamin Hulse off Amar Ullah for 81 (105 balls), 188-3. Two runs later John Huck fell caught by Benjamin Hulse off William Davidson for 32 (56 balls), 190-4

Will Beeden and Lewis Edge were the new batsmen, Will Beeden became Ullah's second victim caught behind by Robbie Davidson for 2 (5 balls), 196-5. Next in was Oli Wileman who was quickly out bowled by Amar Ullah for 2 (3 balls), 198-6

Lewis Edge 11no (9 balls) and Isaac Medhurst 2no (2 balls) saw the hosts close on 206-6 in their 50 overs.

For Settle Amar Ullah took 3-61 from 15 overs, Ashen Silva 2-45 off 15, William Davidson 1-73 from 14 and Lloyd Smith 0-21 off 6.

Settle lost an early wicket Lewis Smith caught by Josh Dixon off Isaac Medhurst for 7 (14 balls), 13-1, Coming in at number three was Benjamin Hulse who was out caught by John Huck off Josh Wills for 3 (28 balls), 26-2.

Ashen Silva joined John Davidson and they looked to be making progress when Samuel Medhurst had John Davidson caught behind by Lewis Edge for 23 (40 balls), 47-3.

Amar Ullah was the new batsman and was the next to go caught by Matt Jackson off Imran Rafiq for 9 (22 balls), 69-4. James Snowden replaced Ullah and with Ashen Silva took the score past the hundred only for two wickets to fall on the same score, Imran Rafiq took two wickts in two balls, James Snowden was caught by Will Beeden for 17 (43 balls), 103-5, Next ball William Davidson was caught by Ben Barrow for 0 (1 ball), 103-6.

There were thirteen overs left and the outlook looked bleak for the visitors, Oli Wileman added to their troubles with two wickets, He bowled Tom Davidson for 4 (5 balls), 108-7. He then had Robbie Davidson lbw for 6 (11 balls), 116-8.

There were ten overs remainign when Will Vause joined Ashen Silva and they saw the visitors close on 143 without further loss, Ashen Silva was 66no (109 balls) and Will Vause 4no (27 balls).

Imran Rafiq took 3-30 from 12 overs, Oli Wileman 2-23 off 8, Samuel Medhurst 1-13 from 5, Isaac Medhurst 1-17 off 6, Josh Wills 1-29 from 10 and Matt Jackson 0-29 off 9.

St Annes v Fleetwood

St Annes won the toss at Vernon Road and decided to bat first but lost Will Trohear caught by Declan Clerkin off James Amor for 1 (15 balls), 6-1, Lukman Vahaluwala was in at three and with Yohan De Silva took the score past fifty, Matthew Siddall's introduction saw the breakthrough, Lukman Vahaluwala was caught by Tomas King for 23 (44 balls), 53-2.

The incoming batsman was Luke Jardine who fell caught by Andy Drake off Cian Dickinson for 2 (6 balls), 58-3. Tom Bradley was the new batsman but soon lost his partner Yohan De Silva caught by Tomas King off Matthew Siddall for 44 (76 balls), 76-4.

Joe Davies replaced De Silva but was out lbw to Cian Dickinson for 5 (9 balls), 82-5. James Bradley joined Tom Bradley and they steadily began to build a score, they had doubled the score when Matthew Siddall broke through having Tom Bradley caught by Cian Dickinson for 45 (71 balls), 168-6.

Joe Hayton was the new man in but with only two runs added he was Matthew Siddall's next victim caught by Declan Clerkin for 2 (6 balls), 171-7, Ryan Birkman was next in and was out on the last ball of the innings caught by Cian Dickinson off Matthew Siddall (his fifth wicket) for 7 (4 balls) as St Annes closed on 170-8 with James Bradley 39no (69 balls).

Matthew Siddall lead the way with 5-57 from 15 overs, Cain Dickinson 2-45 off 11, James Amor 1-22 from 8, Jeremy Davies 0-15 off 3 and Declan Clerkin 0-31 from 13.

The Fleetwood reply mirrored that of the hosts losing an early wicket, Andy Drake was bowled by Joe Hayton for 2 (12 balls), 10-1, Cian Dickinson joined Tomas King and they looked to be making progress when both were out, Tomas King was caught by Alex Urquhart off Lukman Vahaluwala for 22 (28 balls), 48-2. Cian Dickinson was caught by Yohan De Silva off Joe Hayton for 17 (32 balls), 48-3.

Harry McAleer and Jeremy Davies were the two new batsmen, Joe Hayton struck again having Harry McAleer lbw for 15 (30 balls), 69-4. Adam Sharrocks was Jeremy Davies's new partner and they began to swing the game in the visitors favour, Joe Davies made the breakthrough bowling Adam Sharrocks for 36 (70 balls), 141-5.

Tom Bradley then gave the hosts a glimmer of hope running out Jeremy Davies for 42 (73 balls), 146-6. Nathan Bend and Declan Clerkin came together and saw the league leaders home on 182-6 in 47.1 overs with Nathan Bend 23no (19 balls) and Declan Clerkin 17no (19 balls).

For St Annes Joe Hayton took 3-44 from 13 overs, Joe Davies 1-31 off 5, Lukman Vahaluwala 1-48 from 15, Tom Bradley 0-13 off 5 and Yohan De Silva 0-39 from 9.1.
