The Twentieth round of matches in the Northern Premier League 2024 season saw the race for the championship continue with wins for Fleetwood at Settle, Leyland at Chorley with Netherfield beating Blackpool not far behind.
Fulwood & Broughton won an exciting game at Euxton and Garstang beat St Annes while Kendal won against Mawdesley
DIVISION ONE:
Blackpool v Netherfield
Blackpool won the toss at Stanley Park and invited the visitors to bat first, The openers Josh Dixon and Ben Barrow gave the Netherfield innings a solid foundation, their partnership was approaching the hundred when Josh Dixon was out caught by Matthew Grindley off Josh Boyne for 38 (65 balls), 95-1.
Reece Irving came in at three but lost Ben Barrow caught by Hareen Buddila off Matthew Grindley for 57 (109 balls), 119-2. John Huck was next in, they kept the scoreboard ticking over, they both fell within two runs of each other, Reece Irving was bowled by Josh Boyne for 24 (47 balls), 141-3, John Huck followed lbw to Hareen Buddila for 6 (13 balls), 143-4.
The two new batsmen were Morne Venter and Will Beeden, Hareen Buddila soon accounted for Will Beeden lbw for 8 (9 balls), 156-5. Oli Wileman joined Venter and they were going well until he was run out by Arran Lewin for 10 (13 balls), 187-6.
Isaac Medhurst replaced Wileman, Hareen Buddila struck claiming two wickets in two balls, firstly Morne Venter was caught by Josh Boyne for 40 (30 balls), 202-7, next ball Josh Wills was bowled for 0, 202-8.
Samuel Medhurst was in next but fell in the last over for 5 (8 balls) stumped by Ben Howarth to give Hareen Buddila his fifth wicket, 210-9. Last man Matt Jackson 1no (1 ball) and Isaac Medhurst 5no (4 balls) saw Netherfield close on 213-9 in their 50 overs.
Harren Buddila lead the way for the hosts with 5-66 from 10 overs with Josh Boyne 2-53 off 13, Matthew Grindley 1-26 from 15, Jamie Thomson 0-23 off 6 and Harry Birkman 0-28 from 6.
The Blackpool reply got off to a bad start losing Dylan Henshall caught by Will Beeden off Josh Wills for 4 (2 balls), 4-1.
Number three was Andrew Needham and with Daniel Dixon looked to be consolidating the innings when disaster for the hosts with the loss of three wickets for two runs, Daniel Dixon was caught by Will Beeden off Morne Venter for 11 (26 balls), 33-2. New man in Hareen Buddila was caught by Will Beeden off Samuel Medhurst for 1 (6 balls), 34-3. Andrew Needham was the next wicket to fall caught by Will Beeden off Morne Venter for 16 (29 balls), 35-4.
Josh Boyne came to the wicket but was soon out bowled by Samuel Medhurst for 8 (8 balls), 43-5, Harry Birkman replaced Boyne but he was was also bowled by Samuel Medhurst for 4 (2 balls), 47-6.
Stan Howarth and Ben Howarth were the batsmen with the task to try and save the game, All their good work was undone with the run out off Stan Howarth by Josh Wills for 23 (47 balls), 77-7.
Arran Lewin was the new batsman but could not save the inevitable, Morne Vetner cleared up the tail begining with Arran Lewin caught by Isaac Medhurst for 5 (15 balls), 92-8, he then took two wickets in two balls to win the match for the visitors, Ben Howarth was caught by Will Beeden (his fifth catch) for 18 (55 balls), 99-9. next ball Jamie Thomson was caught, catch number six for Will Beeden for 0 (1 balls), 99 all out in 33 overs.
Morne Venter's figures were 5-14 from 8 overs, Samuel Medhurst took 3-34 off 6 with Josh Wills 1-27 from 4, Matt Jackson 0-7 off 9 and Oli Wileman 0-15 from 6.
Chorley v Leyland
Chorley won the toss at Windsor Park and chose to bat first and lost early wickets, Will Moulton was bowled by Ross Bretherton for 12 (18 balls), 14-1. Number three Harry Barclay soon followed caught by Jacob Wright off Kurtis Watson for 5 (13 balls), 20-2.
Jurie Snyman was Miller Childs new partner and they had doubled the score when Miiler Childs was out caught by James Rounding off Ross Bretherton for 12 (37 balls), 44-3, Zayn Wadiwala joined Snyman but with only six runs added both were out, Zayn Wadiwala went first caught by James Critchley off Ross Bretherton for 0 (10 balls), 50-4. Jurie Snyman followed caught by Jacob Wright off Andrew Jacques for 18 (26 balls), 50-5
The two new batsmen were Edwin Moulton and Ben Simpkins and they slowly began building the score. The introduction of Iain Cirtchley into the attack had immediate success, with his second ball he trapped Ben Simpkins lbw for 17 (40 balls), 83-7.
Joseph Tiffin replaced Ben Simpkins but soon lost his partner Edwin Moulton caught by Iain Critchley off Kurtis Watson for 21 (49 balls), 91-7. the new batsman was Kieran Yould who became Iain Critchley's second victim caught by Zalk Willox for 6 (21 balls), 110-8.
Sam Steeple joined Joseph Tiffin but had made only 6 (16 balls) when he was bowled by Andrew Jacques, 119-9. The Chorley innings closed on 138 all out on the last ball of their 50 overs with Joseph Tiffin out lbw to Andrew Jacques for 38 (61 balls) with Matt Dawson 0no (9 balls).
The wickets were shared amongst the Leyland bowlers, Ross Bretherton 3-22 from 15 overs, Andrew Jacques 3-45 off 13, Iain Critchley 2-31 from 10 and Kurtis Waton 2-38 off 12.
The visitors reply followed that of the hosts, James Critchley was out lbw to Will Moulton for 4 (12 balls), 12-1, New man Zak Willox soon followed caught by Ben Simpkins off Edwin Moulton for 9 (5 balls), 23-2.
Kurtis Watson joined Karl Cross but with only six runs added Karl Cross was caught behind by Harry Barclay off Edwin Moulton for 9 (21 balls), 29-3.
Ross Bretherton was Kurtis Watson's new partner and they took the score past the hundred and had put the visitors in a strong position when Ross Bretherton was bowled by Matt Dawson for 31 (76 balls) 113-4.
The hosts were given a glimmer of hope with the visitors losing three wickets for three runs, The new batsman Andrew Makinson fell lbw to Matt Dawson for 0 (9 balls), 123-5, three runs later two wickets fell, Jacob Wright was caught behind by Harry Barclay off Sam Steeple for 2 (4 balls), 126-6, next ball Sam Steeple bowled James Rounding for 0 (1 ball), 126-7.
Kurtis Watson had held the Leyland innings together and it was fitting he hit the winning runs as Leyland closed on 140-7 in 37.4 overs with Kurtis Watson 76no (97 balls) and Iain Critchley 4no (4 balls).
For Chorley Sam Steeple took 2-15 from 5.4 overs, Matt Dawson 2-23 off 7, Edwin Moulton 2-55 from 11, Will Moulton 1-16 off 7, Miller Childs 0-12 from 4 and Jurie Snyman 0-17 off 3.
Euxton v Fulwood & Broughton
Fulwood and Broughton won the toss at Balshaw Park and elected to bat first, they lost Ewen Mansford bowled by Zane Gilder for 3 (18 balls), 10-1.Brendan Morris was in at three and with Matt Smith were going along nicely until James Bone had Brendan Morris caught by Ben Houghton for 29 (35 balls), 57-2.
Simon Kerrigan was in next, Joseph Bowden was brought into the atack and in his second over he bowled Matt Smith for 27 (43 balls), 63-3.
Disaster struck for the visitors with the loss of four wickets for four runs, James Bone took the first wicket having Simon Kerrigan caught by Zane Nirodi for 3 (12 balls), 72-4. Joseph Bowden then took three wickets, trapping Jon Fenton lbw for 1 (4 balls), 73-5, he then had Ben Rosbottom caught by James Bone for 6 (18 balls), 74-6, and finally Ben Parkinson fell to the Bone/Bowden combination for 0 (2 balls), 76-7.
James McWilliam had a new partner in Muhammad Zaid and the battled away and were making progress until Joseph Bowden claimed his fifth wicket James McWilliam caught by Max Harper for 31 (84 balls), 121-8
Lewis Wellings joined Zaid and they continued to build on the score, Muhammad's fighting innings came to an end stumped by Jack Morgan off Ben Houghton for 17 (52 balls), 141-9.
The visitors innings closed on 147 in 49.4 overs with Khalil Patel run out by Daniel Barker for 2 (7 balls) leaving Lewis Wellings 19no (24 balls).
Joseph Bowden took 5-33 from 15 overs, James Bone 2-26 off 15, Ben Houghton 1-22 from 4.4, Zane Gilder 1-32 off 8 and Joseph Barker 0-28 from 7.
Zane Nirodi and Aneeq Hassan gave the hosts a good start their partnership broken when Aneeq Hassan was caught by Brendan Morris off Jon Fenton for 15 (39 balls), 36-1.
Sam Sweeney was the hosts number three and continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over until Simon Kerrigan was brought on and in his first over Sam Sweeney was stumped by James McWilliam for 15 (12 balls), 53-2.
James Bone replaced Sweeney and with Nirodi took the score past the hundred only for Bone to fall lbw to Ewen Mansford for 26 (56 balls), 103-3. Zane Gilder was next in and with Nirodi took the score in sight of victory with only 22 runs required with 7 wickets in hand when he was out lbw to Simon Kerrigan for 8 (28 balls), 126-4.
Euxton needed twelve runs to win when disaster struck losing six wickets for seven runs, The crucial wicket of Zane Nirodi was the first to fall caught by Simon Kerrigan off Brendan Morris for 57 (115 balls), 136-5. without addition Ben Houghton was caught by Muhammad Zaid off Simon Kerrigan for 1 (8 balls), 136-6.
Max Harper was the next to go lbw to Simon Kerrigan for 1 ( 9 balls), 138-7, Brendan Morris then had Daniel Barker caught by Lewis Wellings for 1 (5 balls), 138-8.
Simon Kerrigan claimed his fifth wicket Jack Morgan caught by Lewis Wellings for 0 (7 balls), 139-9. The visitors claimed victory by six runs with Brendan Morris bowling Joseph Barker for 3 (9 balls) as Euxton were bowled out for 141 in 48.3 overs with Joseph Bowden 0no (3 balls).
The Fulwood & Broughton bowling was Simon Kerrigan 5-21 from 14 overs, Brendan Morris 3-15 off 6.5, Ewen Mansford 1-18 from 5, Jon Fenton 1-26 off 8, Lewis Wellings 0-22 from 5 and Khalil Patel 0-34 off 10.
Garstang v St Annes
St Annes won the toss at the Riverside Sports ground and invited the hosts to bat first with an early success Tom Higson out caught and bowled by Mitch Bolus for 2 (10 balls), 13-1.
Matthew Crowther joined Imran Butt and were accumulating steadily until Lukman Vahaluwala bowled Matthew Crowther for 9 (29 balls), 34-2. Michael Walling was the new batsman and the partnership was approaching 50 when Michael Walling was out lbw to Yohan De Silva for 14 (37 balls), 73-3.
Adam Ball replaced Walling and was scoring at a run a ball until he was caught by Tom Bradley off Joe Hayton for 19 (20 balls), 111-4. New man Ashton Charles soon became Joe Hayton's second wicket bowled for 5 (13 balls), 119-5.
Imran Butt had a new partner in Mark Walling and they were going well until Joe Hayton took two wickets in two balls, Mark Walling was caught by Yohan De Silva for 30 (39 balls), 184-6, next ball he bowled Danny Gilbert for 0 (1 ball), 184-7.
Ernie Collinson came to the wicket but was quickly out bowled by Lukman Vahaluwala for 2 (6 balls), 187-8. Imran Butt's innings came to an end bowled by Lukman Vahaluwala for 81 (125 balls), 194-9.
Number eleven Joe Barlow was last man out run out by Tom Bradley for 5 (9 balls) as Garstang were 214 all out in 49.4 overs with Ian Walling 20no (10 balls).
Joe Hayton took 4-49 from 10 overs, Lukman Vahaluwala 3-61 off 15, Yohan De Silva 1-21 from 5, Mitch Bolus 1-61 off 15 and Tom Bradley 0-16 from 5.
The St Annes reply got off to a good start with an opening partnership of 31 broken by Ian Walling trapping Nathan Armstrong lbw for 6 (23 balls), 31-1, Lukman Vahaluwala was the new batsman but fell lbw to Danny Gilbert for 8 (11 balls), 40-2.
Danny Gilbert then bowled new man Nathan Bolus for 5 (15 balls), 50-3. Disaster struck for the visitors with Yohan De Silva falling caught by Imran Butt off Tom Higson for 26 (66 balls), 70-4
Luke Jardine replaced De Silva but with only six runs added to the score he was caught by Ernie Collinson off Joe Barlow for 13 (31 balls), 76-5.
The visitors were in trouble but Tom Bradley and Joe Davies dug in and began to give hope and gave the visitors a chance of victory, The return of Danny Gilbert to the attack changed things, in his second over he had Tom Bradley caught by Mark Walling for 41 (58 balls), 145-6
Joe Hayton joined Davies but with only fifteen runs added Danny Gilbert struck again Joe Davies out caught by Imran Butt for 31 (54 balls), 160-7. Incoming batsman Ryan Birkman was Gilbert's next victim caught by Ernie Collinson for 1 (2 balls), 161-8
The St Annes batsmen were still looking for the runs Joe Hayton fell run out by Danny Gilbert for 18 (20 balls), 177-9. The final pair of James Bradley and Mitch Bolus added twenty when James Bradley was run out for 10 (13 balls) by Michael Walling as St Annes were 198 all out in 49.2 overs with Mitch Bolus 13 no (5 balls).
Danny Gilbert lead the way for the hosts with 5-58 from 15 overs with Joe Barlow 1-23 off 6, Ian Walling 1-26 from 10, Tom Higson 1-28 off 9, Ernie Collinson 0-43 from 9.2.
Kendal v Mawdesley
Kendal won the toss at Shap Road and put the visitors into bat. Mawdesley had a disastrous start losing four of the top five for eight runs. Louis Backhouse doing most of the damage. He bowled Daniel Unsworth for 3 (8 balls), 7-1. Sam Sharp trapped Fyffe Dennis lbw for 4 (5 balls), 7-2.
Louis Backhouse then took two wickets with only one run added, Christopher Andrews was caught behind by Finlay Richardson for 0 (4 balls), 8-3. New batsman Nathan Trengove was out lbw for 0 (4 balls), 8-4.
Dominic Hendricks and Lee Berrie had to pick up the pieces and try and rebuild the innings, they were making progress until Sam Sharp took two wickets in two balls, He bowled Lee Berrie for 11 (27 balls), 38-5. next ball Ben Munslow was out lbw for 0 (1 ball), 38-6.
Joshua Unsworth joined Dominic Hendricks and they were approaching the hundred when Freddie Fallows had Joshua Unsworth lbw for 22 (55 balls), 91-7. Charlie Hailwood replaced Unsworth but was soon out bowled by Evan Williams for 0 (4 balls), 99-8.
W Caunce was Dominic Hendricks new partner and dug in but with eight runs added he was caught by Sam Dutton off Freddie Fallows for 1 (30 balls). 107-9. Matthew Parkinson was in at number eleven, he was bowled by Evan Williams for 0 (7 balls) as Mawdesley were bowled out for 108 in 38.5 overs with Dominic Hendricks unbeaten on 61 (92 balls).
In reply the Kendal opening pair put them in a stong position with a stand of 74 broken by Dominic Hendricks having Freddie Fallows caught by Joshua Unsworth for 32 (45 balls), 74-1. Finlay Richardson joined Evan Williams but lost Williams caught by Joshua Unsworth off Daniel Unsworth for 45 (57 balls), 85-2.
Max Winskill replaced Williams but was soon out lbw to Matthew Parkinson for 4 (18 balls). That was the last success for the visitors as Finlay Richardson 21no (28 balls) and Tim Boyd 5no (18 balls) saw Kendal home on 110-3 in 27.3 overs.
For Mawdesley Matthew Parkinson took 1-16 from 4.3 overs, Dominic Hendricks 1-24 off 7, Daniel Unsworth 1-43 from 6, Joshua Unsworth 0-11 off 7 and Christopher Andrews 0-14 from 3.
Settle v Fleetwood
Fleetwood won the toss at Marshfield and asked the hosts to bat first, Settle got off to a disastrous start losing four wickets for nine runs, Ashen Silva was the first to go caught by Nathan Bend off Zak Chappell for 0 (5 balls), 1-1. Lewis Smith followed caught by Tomas King off James Amor for 3 (10 balls), 3-2.
There was no respite for the hosts Zac Chappell bowled Amar Ullah for 0 (3 balls), 4-3 and then bowled John Davidson for 3 (8 balls), 9-4. Benjamin Hulse and James Snowden were given the task to try and turn the game around, their partnership was thirty when they were both out, Benjamin Hulse was caught behind by Harry McAleer off Matthew Siddall for 12 (54 balls), 39-5, James Snowden followed caught by Tomas King off Declan Clerkin for 20 (29 balls), 39-6.
Things did not improve for the hosts with new batsman William Davidson caught by Adam Sharrocks for 0 (4 balls), 41-7. Next in Tom Davidson was bowled by Declan Clerkin for 2 (12 balls), 43-8.
Robbie Davisdon and Will Vause went on the attack and were scoring well until Zak Chappell returned and claimed his fourth and fifth wickets, He had Will Vause caught by Matthew Siddall for 22 (25 balls), 87-9. three balls later he bowled Lloyd Smith for 0 (3 balls) as Settle were bowled out for 87 in 30.5 overs leaving Robbie Davidson 19no (32 balls).
Zak Chappell's figures were 5-29 from 8.5 overs with Declan Clerkin 2-18 off 7, Matthew Siddall 2-21 from 10 and James Amor 1-14 off 5.
The Fleetwood openers Tomas King and Andy Drake gave the visitors the perfect start, Will Vause broke the partnership having Tomas King caught by John Davidson for 34 (23 balls), 48-1.
Harry McAleer came in at three and with Andy Drake took them in sight of victory when he was caught by James Snowden off William Davidson for 18 (15 balls), 82-2.
Zak Chappell joined Andy Drake and they quickly scored the required runs for victory reaching 88-2 in 16.2 overs, Andy Drake was 26no (57 balls) ans Zak Chappell 6no (5 balls)
The Settle bowling was William Davidson 1-7 from 2.2 overs, Will Vause 1-22 off 2, Amar Ullah 0-15 from 5, Tom Davidson 0-16 off 3 and Lloyd Smith 0-28 from 4
