The Northern Cricket League Review

The Nineteenth round of matches in the Northern Premier League 2024 season saw Garstang complete the double over the leaders Fleetwood, Their loss and Leyland's win over Blackpool reduces their lead to 16 points.

St Annes suprised Kendal with a 3 wicket win, Fulwood & Broughton defeated Euxton and Longridge beat Mawdesley

Settle had a winning draw against Chorley.

DIVISION ONE:

Fleetwood v Garstang

Garstang won the toss at Broadwater and chose to bat first, They made 177 all out in their 48.5 overs with the top three scoring the majority of their runs.

Imran Butt top scored with 59 with Tom Higson 35 and Matthew Crowther 30, number nine Ian Walling made a major contribution with 28.

Matthew Siddall took 4-36 from 15 overs with Declan Clerkin 3-62 off 13.5, Vathsal Govind 2-40 from 12, Luke Wilkinson 1-20 off 5 and Jeremy Davies 0-19 from 3.

In reply Fleetwood were bowled out for 155 in 46.3 overs, Jeremy Davies 64 and Govind Vathsal 35 lead the way but only Declan Clerkin 17 and Andy Drake 10 of the other batsmen reached double figures.

Ian Walling was the man who did the damage with 6-46 from 15 overs supported by Tom Higson 2-36 off 10.3 , Danny Gilbert 2-44 from 15, Imran Butt 0-12 off 4 and Tom Wells 0-13 from 2

Fulwood & Broughton v Euxton

Fulwood & Broughton won the toss at the Highfield ground and decided to bat first, Ewen Mansford and Matt Smith gave them a good start with an opening partnership of 50 broken with Matt Smith trapped lbw by James Bone for 23 (32 balls), 50-1.

Brendan Morris was in at three but he soon lost Ewen Mansford bowled by Ben Houghton for 21 (42 balls), 52-2. Simon Kerrigan was the new batsman and with Brendan Morris were going well until Aneeq Hassan had Simon Kerrigan caught by Max Harper for 26 (51 balls), 133-3.

Ben Rosbottom joined Morris and they continued to make progress, James Bone broke the stand having Brendan Morris caught by Josheph Bowden for 68 (73 balls), 165-4.

James McWilliam replaced Morris but with only eight runs added Ben Rosbottom was caught by Ben Houghton off Zane Gilder for 18 (39 balls), 173-5, new man in Jon Fenton quickly fell bowled by Zane Gilder for 1 (10 balls), 177-6.

Mark Smith was the new partner for James McWilliam, Zane Gilder claimed his third wicket Mark Smith caught by James Bone for 2 (10 balls), 180-7.

Lewis Wellings was the next man in and with James McWilliam saw the hosts close on 214-7 in their 50 overs with James McWilliam 27no (26 balls) and Lewis Wellings 7no (18 balls).

The Euxton bowling was Zane Gilder 3-42 from 12 overs, James Bone 2-56 off 15, Aneeq Hassan 1-19 from 7, Ben Houghton 1-29 off 5, Joseph Bowden 0-22 from4 and Jack Shovelton 0-30 off 7.

The Euxton opening pair laid a good foundation for the innings, Disater struck for the visitors losing three wickets for one run, Simon Kerrigan broke the partnership having Zane Nirodi caught behind by James McWilliam for 42 (55 balls), (8x4, 1x6), 79-1.

Sam Sweeney came in at three but lost Aneeq Hassan two balls later run out by James McWilliam for 36 (49 balls), 79-2. James Bone was the new batsman but fell caught by Simon Kerrigan off Jon Fenton for 0 (5 balls), 80-3.

Zane Gilder joined Sweeney, Simon Kerrigan claimed wicket number three Zane Gilder caught by Ewen Mansford for (8 balls), 89-4. Ben Houghton came in next and saw Simon Kerrigan take two wickets in three balls, Sam Sweeney went first caught behind by James McWilliam for 10 (14 balls), 95-5, two balls later Jack Shovelton was caught by Ewen Mansford for 0 (2 balls), 95-6.

Max Harper replaced Shovelton but was out caught behind by James McWilliam off Lewis Wellings for 3 (16 balls), 110-7. Joseph Barker was Ben Houghton's new partner and they dug in and tried to rebuild the innings, Khalil Patel broke their partnership having Ben Houghton caught by Brendan Morris for 35 (49 balls), 144-8.

Danny Curtis was next in and continued the fight, Simon Kerrigan claimed his fifth wicket Danny Durtis caught behind by James McWilliam for 20 (28 balls), 177-9.

The Euxton innings came to a close on 177 in 46.1 overs with the first ball of the next over Joseph Barker bowled by Lewis Wellings for 26 (55 balls) with Joseph Bowden 0no without facing.

Wicketkeeper James McWiiliam took four catches and one run out in the Euxton innings.

Simon Kerrigan took 5-45 from 14 overs, Lewis Wellings 2-21 off 5.1, Jon Fenton 1-38 from 12, Khalil Patel 1-57 off 9 and Ewen Mansford 0-15 from 6.

Leyland v Blackpool

Leyland won the toss at the Stanning Memorial ground and elected to bat first, they lost an early wicket James Critchley caught by Andrew Needham off Matthew Grindley for 2 (10 balls), 18-1.

The Leyland number three was Zak Willox, Matthew Grindley took his second wicket Karl Cross caught by Josh Boyne for 25 (40 balls), 39-2. Ross Bretherton joined Willox but lasted only two balls bowled by Jamie Thomson for 0, 50-3.

Andrew Makinson was Willox's new partner and they took the score past the hundred, Josh Boyne made the breakthrough bowling Zak Willox for 54 (79 balls), 107-4. Jacob Wright replaced Willox and kept the scoreboard ticking over.

Jamie Thomson broke the partnership having Jacob Wright caught by Matthew Grindley for 22 (39 balls), 140-5, the new batsman was James Rounding and with Andrew Makinson were moving the score along until James Rounding was caught behind by Ben Howarth off Jamie Thomson for 18 (25 balls), 171-6.

Iain Critchley was the new man in was was out on the last ball of the innings stumped by Ben Howarth of Josh Boyne for 2 (3 balls) as Leyland closed on 178-7 in their 50 overs with Andrew Makinson 50 no (102 balls).

For Blackpool Jamie Thomson took 3-52 from 13 overs, Matthew Grindley 2-21 off 11, Josh Boyne 2-51 from 14, Arran Lewin 0-15 off 3 and Harry Birkman 0-36 from 9.

The opening pair for the visitors got off to a steady start, Rishit Sharma was the first man out caught behind by Adam Sexton off Ross Bretherton for 13 (20 balls), 25-1.

Arran Lewin was the new batsman but lost his partner Daniel Dixon caught by Zak Willox off Ross Bretherton for 16 (47 balls), 46-2, Andrew Needham joined Lewin, Ross Bretherton claimed his third wicket bowling Arran Lewin for 17 (30 balls), 54-3.

Josh Boyne was next in, Ross Bretherton once again broke the partnership, Andrew Needham caught by Jmaes Ctirchley for 8 (27 balls), 79-4. Stuart Ashford replaced Needham and with Boyne were making progress when Ben Baker bowled Stuart Ashford for 15 (30 balls), 112-5.

Harry Birkman was the new batsman but on reaching 11 (14 balls) he was out lbw to Iain Critchley, 129-6, Disaster struck for the visitors with only three runs added Critchley trapped Josh Boyne lbw for 41 (68 balls), 132-7.

Blackpool were now trying to save the game, Ben Howarth and Matthew Grindley were given the task but Andrew Jacques had Matthew Grindley caught by Zak Willox for 5 (16 balls), 143-8.

The number ten batsman was Paul Danson who fell first ball lbw to Iain Critchely for 0, 146-9. Blackpool were bowled out for 157 in 47 overs when Ben Howarth was bowled by Iain Critchley for 22 (30 balls), Jamie Thomson was 0no without facing.

Ross Bretherton and Iain Critchley did the damage for the hosts, Iain Critchley took 4-21 from 7 overs, Ross Bretherton 4-29 off 15, Ben Baker 1-40 from 10, Andrew Jacques 1-47 off 13 and James Critchley 0-14 from 2.

Longridge v Mawdesley

Longridge won the toss at the Rectory Field ground and invited the hosts to bat first, The openers were soon parted Daniel Unsworth run out for 3 (15 balls), 11-1.

The hosts number three was Christopher Andrews who was quickly out caught behind by Tom Turner off Tom Howarth for 0 (2 balls), 12-2. Dominic Hendricks joined Fyffe Dennis and they were going well until Dominic Hendricks was caught by Taariq Chiecktey off Jake Durnell for 54 (59 balls), 91-3.

The fall of Hendricks's wicket saw a mini collapse with three wickets falling for one run, New batsman Toby Ambrose was caught by Joshua Mullin off Jake Durnell for 1 (3 balls), 95-4, two balls later Jake Durnell bowled Will Hurst for 0 (2 balls). 95-5.

The incoming batsman was Lee Berrie out caught and bowled by Alex Mason for 0 (3 balls), 96-6. Ben Munslow replaced Berrie and with Dennis took the score past the hundred only for him to fall bowled by Alex Mason for 5 (14 balls), 112-7.

Alex Mason claimed two more vicitims in two balls, Joshua Unsworth caught by Luke Platt for 5 (11 balls), 118-8, next ball Joshua Adamson lbw for 0, 118-9.

The Mawdesley innings came to a close with the fall of the battling Fyffe Dennis caught by Alex Mason off Tom Howarth for 54 (142 balls) as they were all out for 124 in 42.1 overs with Neil O'Malley 0no (1 ball).

Alex Mason had figures of 4-24 from 8 overs with Jake Durnell 3-37 off 13, Tom Howarth 2-12 from 8.1 overs, Gabriel Dowthwaite 0-19 off 6 and Jacob Proctor 0-31 from 7.

The hosts got off to a good start with Taariq Chiecktey the first out caught by Toby Ambrose off Daniel Unsworth for 19 (25 balls), 48-1. The new batsman was Luke Platt but he soon lost his partner Joshua Mullin caught by Lee Berrie off Neil O'Malley for 20 (32 balls), 58-2.

Zac Christie joined Platt and the took the score to 97 when Neil O'Malley claimed his second wicket Luke Platt stumped by Fyffe Dennis for 18 (50 balls), 97-3.

That was the last success for the visitors as new man Rob Hollinghurst 11no (15 balls) and Zac Christie 41no (59 balls) saw the hosts home on 126-3 in 30 overs.

The Mawdesley bowling was Neil O'Malley 2-58 from 13, Daniel Unsworth 1-12 off 4, Joshua Adamson 0-8 from 2, Dominic Hendricks 0-14 off 4 and Joshua Unsworth 0-29 from 7.

Settle v Chorley

Chorley won the toss at Marshfield and asked the hosts to bat first, they got off to a bad start losing their first three wickets for 12 runs and a fourth for 21.

The first to go was Archie Phillipson caught behind by Harry Barclay off Edwin Moulton for 1 (10 balls), 11-1. One run later two wickets fell, Lewis Smith was bowled by Edwin Moulton for 9 (19 balls), 12-2, new batsman Ashen Silva fell lbw to Will Moulton for 1 (14 balls), 12-3

Amar Ullah and John Davidson were the new batsmen, Edwin Moulton claimed his third wicket John Davidson caught by Ben Simpkins for 8 (19 balls), 21-4.

Benjamin Hulse joined Ullah and they dug in, Will Moulton broke through having Amar Ullah lbw for 6 (32 balls), 32-5, James Snowden replaced Ullah but soon became another victim for Will Moulton caught behind by Harry Barclay for 7 (20 balls), 50-7.

Next in was William Vause but was soon out lbw to Sunny John for 3 (8 balls), 57-7. William Davidson became Benjamin Hulse's new partner and they began building a partnership broken by Matt Dawson bowling William Davidson for 32 (39 balls), 109-8.

Robbie Davidson came in but was run out by Sunny John for 0 (6 balls), 115-9. Number eleven was Will Smith and with Hulse saw the hosts close on 169-9 in their 50 overs with Benjamin Hulse 52no (102 balls) and Will Smith 27no (32 balls).

Will Moulton took 3-19 from 15 overs, Edwin Moulton 3-42 off 15, Sunny John 1-30 from 5 and Matt Dawson 1-61 off 15.

The Chorley reply was going quite well until both openers were out on the same score, William Vause had Will Moulton caught by Benjamin Hulse for 21 (21 balls), 33-1. In the next over Ben Simpkins was caught behind by Robbie Davidson off William Davidson for 7 (24 balls), 33-2.

The two new batsmen were Harry Barclay and Zayn Wadiwala, having taken the score past 50 Zayn Wadiwala was caught by Benjamin Hulse off Ashen Silva for 10 (44 balls), 55-3.

Alfie Dobson replace Wadiwala but disaster struck for the visitors losing three wickets on the same score, Harry Barclay went first caught by William Vause off Amar Ullah for 12 (37 balls), 74-4, Edwin Moulton quickly followed lbw to Amar Ullah for 0 (4 balls), 74-5. Alfie Dobson was next caught and bowled by Ashen Silva for 11 (20 balls). 74-6.

Kieran Yould and Sunny John were the new batsmen but Ullah struck again bowling Sunny John for 2 (15 balls), 77-7. The visitors were in trouble 3 wickets left and 22 overs to go, Matthew Sedgman joined Yould and they battled to save the game, Amar Ullah broke the partnership having Kieran Yould caught by Will Smith for 28 (50 balls), 134-8.

Miller Childs came to the wicket but lost Matthew Sedgman caught behind by Robbie Davidson off William Davidson for 22 (55 balls), 138-9. Last man was Matt Dawson with nearly five overs left for the hosts to get the last wicket. Miller Childs 6no (18 balls) and Matt Dawson 5no (18 balls) saw the visitors close on 148-9 in their 50 overs.

Amar Ullah with 4-49 from 14 overs lead the way for the hosts with Ashen Silva 2-27 off 15, William Davison 2-32 from 15 and William Vause 1-24 off 6.

St Annes v Kendal

Kendal won the toss at Vernon Road and chose to bat first, Openers Freddie Fallows and Evan Williams got them off to a very good start with 64 on the board from only 12 overs, Mitch Bolus made the the breakthrough having Evan Williams caught behind by James Bradley for 29 (38 balls), 64-1

Finlay Richardson came in next and kept up with the run rate until Freddie Fallows was caught by Thomas Bradley off Yohan De Silva for 55 (50 balls)(6x4, 3x6), 90-2. Sam Dutton joined Richardson, the return to the attack of Lukman Vahaluwala saw him have Sam Dutton caught behind by James Bradley for 12 (25 balls), 117-3.

The remainder of the Kendal innings was a complete disaster losing seven wickets for only nine runs, Yohan De Silva started the collapse with two wickets in three balls, Bradley Earl was caught and bowled for 7 (10 balls), 132-4. three balls later Lewis Richardson went lbw for 0 (3 balls), 132-5

In the next over Finlay Richardson was out caught by Mitch Bolus off Lukman Vahaluwala for 31 (34 balls), 136-6. Worse was to come with three wickets falling on 138, Sam Sharp was lbw to Lukman Vahaluwala for 1 (10 balls), 138-7, two balls later Chris Miller was caught behind by James Bradley off Valhaluwala for 0 (2 balls), 138-8, Yohan De Silva bowled Tim Boyd for 1 (6 balls), 139-9.

The Kendal innings came to a close on 141 all out in 31.2 overs with Yohan De Silva claiming his fifth wicket bowling Louis Backhouse for 2 (7) leaving Alec Carradus 1no (4 balls).

Yohan De Silva took 5-59 from 11.2 overs with Lukman Vahaluwala 4-37 off 11 and Mitch Bolus 1-44 from 9.

The St Annes openers made a steady start, Nathan Armstrong was the first to go caught and bowled by Chris Miller for 20 (40 balls), 28-1. Lukman Vahaluwala was next in but was soon out lbw to Freddie Fallows for 5 (11 balls). 51-2.

Nathan Bolus joined De Silva but lost his partner caught by Bradley Earl off Chris Miller for 18 (42 balls), 55-3. Luke Jardine came in next and with Bolus kept the scoreboard ticking over until Louis Backhouse trapped Nathan Bolus lbw for 16 (28 balls), 86-4.

Christopher Wilson replaced Bolus and with Jardine took the score past the hundred, Louis Backhouse struck with two wickets in three balls bowling Christopher Wilson for 4 (24 balls), 104-5, followed two balls later bowling Joe Hayton for 0 (2 balls), 104-6.

Tom Bradley was the new batsman and with Jardine moved the score towards their target, Louis Backhouse once again made the breakthrough bowling Tom Bradley for 14 (23 balls), 128-7

Luke Jardine had been holding the innings together and had a new partner in Ryan Birkman who brought victory to the hosts with two fours in two balls as St Annes closed on 145-7 in 44.4 overs. Luke Jardine was 41no (78 balls) with Ryan Birkman 11no (20 balls).

This victory gives St Annes a glimmer of hope in the fight against relegation.

The Kendal bowling was Louis Backhouse 4-23 from 11, Chris Miller 2-51 off 15, Freddie Fallows 1-42 from 15 and Sam Sharp 0-13 off 3.4
