The Northern Cricket League Review

The Eighteenth round of matches in the Northern Premier League 2024 season saw leaders Fleetwood lose to Garstang and Leyland lose to fellow title contenders Kendal.

Netherfield's win at Euxton moves them up to second, Settle beat St Annes and give themselves breathing space in relegation battle.

There were winning draws for Blackpool against Choley and Longridge at home to Mawdesley.

DIVISION ONE:

Blackpool v Chorley

Blackpool won the toss at Stanley Park and chose to bat first, The opening batsmen Daniel Dixon and Dylan Henshall gave them a brilliant start with a partnership of 103 broken by Jurie Snyman having Dylan Henshall caught by Sam Steeple for 67 (58 balls), 103-1.

Shivam Chaudhary came in at number three. Jurie Snyman claimed his second victim bowling Daniel Dixon for 39 (67 balls), 126-2. Andrew Needham joined Choudhary and they were scoring at a good rate taking the score past the two hundred mark.

Jurie Snyman once again made the breakthrough dismissing both batsmen within three balls. Andrew Needhan was first to go caught by Kieran Yould for 51 (60 balls), 218-3, two balls later Shivam Chaudhary was caught by Matt Dawson for 54 (77 balls), 219-4.

Josh Boyne and Stuart Ashford were the two new batsmen, Josh Boyne became Jurie Snyman's fifth wicket caught and bowled for 10 (6 balls), 232-5.

Harry Birkman relaced Boyne, Matt Dwson struck taking two wickets in three balls, Stuart Ashford caught by Will Moulton for 6 (9 balls), 236-6, two balls later new batsman Ben Howarth was bowled for 0 (2 balls), 236-7.

That was the last success for the visitors as Harry Birkman 18no (14 balls) and Arran Lewin 5no (8 balls) saw the hosts close on 259-7 in their 50 overs.

Jurie Snyman took 5-52 from 15 overs with Matt Dawson 2-71 off 13, Miller Childs 0-21 from 4, Sam Steeple 0-26 off 3, Edwin Moulton 0-36 from 5 and Will Moulton 0-45 0ff 10.

The visitors opening batsmen were moving the scorebaord along until Miller Childs was caught by Dylan Henshall off Matthew Grindley for 15 (18 balls), 29-1.

Harry Barclay was the Chorley number three, Matthew Grindley struck again Will Moulton caught by Daniel Dixon for 18 (29 balls), 39-2. Jurie Snyman joined Barclay who was being tied down, Josh Boyne was introduced into the the attack and in his second over bowled Harry Barclay for 6 (38 balls), 61-3.

Edwin Moulton replaced Barclay and with Snyman were going along nicely. Matthew Grindley was brought back into the attack and took two wickets in his first over, he took the vital wicket of Jurie Snyman caught and bowled for 48 (73 balls), 110-4, four balls later he had Kieran Yould caught by Paul Danson for 0 (4 balls), 110-5.

Ben Simpkins joined Edwin Moulton and they were going along steadily, Matthew Grindley broke the partnership and claimed his fifth wicket having Edwin Moulton caught by Shivam Chaudhary for 34 (68 balls), 146-6.

Joseph Tiffin was the new batsman, their partnership was 36 when Josh Boyne bowled Ben Simpkins for 34 (46 balls), 172-7, Matthew Sedgman came to the wicket with less than five overs to go and fell bowled by Stuart Ashford for 2 (5 balls), 181-8.

The Chorley innings closed on 195-8 in their 50 overs with Joseph Tiffin 27no (15 balls) and Sam Steeple 4no (8 balls).

Matthew Grindley's figures were 5-57 from 15 overs, Josh Boyne took 2-33 off 11, Stuart Ashford 1-13 from 2, Shivam Chaudhary 0-16 off 5, Arran Lewin 0-31 from 5 and Harry Birkman 0-44 off 12.

Euxton v Netherfield

Euxton won the toss at Balshaw Park and elected to bat first, The opening stand was 21 when both openers were out, Aneeq Hassan was the first to go caught by John Huck off Josh Wills for 13 (14 balls), 21-1. In the next over Zane Nirodi was caught by Lee Hogg off Morne Venter for 5 (7 balls), 21-2.

The two new batsmen were Sam Sweeney and James Bone, they were slowly rebuilding the innings when history repeated itself losing two wickets in two overs, Matt Jackson broke the partnership with Sam Sweeney caught and bowled for 19 (37 balls), 54-3, next over new batsman Zane Gilder was out lbw to Samuel Medhurst for 0 (7 balls), 55-4.

Ben Houghton joined Bone and they continued to make progrss until Isaac Medhurst bowled Ben Houghton for 15 (31 balls), 80-5. Next in was Jack Shovelton but he did not last long caught and bowled by Oli Wileman for 2 (9 balls), 87-6.

Joseph Barker replaced Shovelton and dug in but was out bowled by Oli Wileman for 7 (25 balls), 107-7. Louis Sweeney was James Bone's next partner and they were slowly building the score, the return of Samuel Medhurst to the attack saw him take two wickets in successive balls in his second over, He bowled Louis Sweeney for 11 (43 balls), 157-8. Next ball he trapped Danny Curtis lbw for 0 (1 ball). 157-9.

The Euxton innings came to a close shortly after on 159 all out in 49.1 overs with James Bone caught by Oli Wileman off Morne Venter for 77 (121 balls), Joseph Bowden was 1no (1 ball).

Each Netherfield bowler took a wicket lead by Samuel Medhurst 3-27 from 9 overs, Oli Wileman 2-23 off 8, Morne Venter 2-46 from 12.1, Matt Jackson 1-16 off 8, Isaac Medhurst 1-18 from 7 and Josh Wills 1-23 off 5.

The visitors got off to a bad start losing Josh Dixon caught behind by Danny Curtis off Joseph Barker for 1 (13 balls), 4-1. Lee Hogg joined Ben Barrow and they were keeping the scoreboard ticking over, James Bone made the breakthrough having Lee Hogg caught by Jack Shovelton for 21 (39 balls), 71-2.

John Huck replaced Hogg but lost his partner Ben Barrow lbw to Ben Houghton for 45 (79 balls), 91-3. Morne Venter was next in and with John Huck leading the way saw the visitors to victory on 160-3 in 35.3 overs, John Huck was 58no (59 balls) and Morne Venter 19no (28 balls).

For Euxton Joseph Barker took 1-26 from 5, Ben Houghton 1-27 off 7, James Bone 1-28 from 8, Zane Gilder 0-3 off 1, Jack Shovelton 0-11 from 7, Joseph Bowden 0-16 off 3, Louis Sweeney o-20 from 2 and Sam Sweeney 0-33 off 2.3.

Garstang v Fleetwood

Garstang won the toss at the Riverside Sports ground and invited the visitors to bat first, They did not get off to a good start losing Tomas King caught and bowled by Ian Walling for 4, 9-1.

Vathsal Govind was in at three but soon lost his partner Andy Drake caught and bowled by Ian Walling for 8 (30 balls), 26-2. Adam Sharrocks was in next and with Govind got the visitors innings back on course. Tom Higson broke the partnership bowling Adam Sharrocks for 26 (76 balls), 97-3.

Harry McAleer replaced Sharrocks, Tom Higson struck taking the vital wicket of Vathsal Govind caught and bowled for 56 (105 balls), 120-4. Things got worse for the visitors with Tom Higson taking two wickets for one run, He had new batsman Jeremy Davies stumped by Matthew Crowther for 3 (13 balls), 132-5, followed one run later trapping Harry McAleer lbw for 24 (31 balls), 133-6.

The two new batsmen were Nathan Bend and Declan Clerkin, Declan Clerkin became Tom Higson's fifth victim caught by Ian Walling for 14 (8 balls), 159-7, Charlie Clark joined Nathan Bend but soon became wicket number six for Tom Higson bowling him for 3 (4 balls), 183-8.

James Amor was in next but lost Nathan Bend in the last over caught by Imran Butt off Danny Gilbert for 34 (16 balls), 191-9, Matthew Siddall 3no (2 balls) was in at eleven and with James Amor 5no (3 balls) saw the visitors close on 195-9 in their 50 overs.

Tom Higson took 6-57 from 11 overs, Ian Walling 2-25 off 15, Danny Gilbert 1-29 from 11, Joe Barlow 0-21 off 4 and Tom Wells 0-50 from 9.

The Garstang reply started off very well with an opening partnership of 45 broken when Tom Higson was caught and bowled by Matthew Siddall for 17 (33 balls), 45-1.

Matthew Crowther joined Imran Butt and were putting the hosts in a strong position when two wickets fell for one run, Vathsal Govind had Matthew Crowther caught behind by Harry McAleer for 24 (66 balls), 116-2. One run later Joseph Pearson was caught by Tomas King off Declan Clerkin for 1 (2 balls), 117-3.

Adam Ball replaced Pearson and with Imran Butt took the score to 150 when Matthew Siddall claimed two wickets in two balls, first was Imran Butt caught by Jeremy Davies for 89 (130 balls), 150-4. Next ball Charlie Parkinson was lbw for 0 (1 ball), 150-5.

Danny Gilbert was the new batsmen and with Ball moved the score along until Adam Ball was caught by Matthew Siddall off Jeremy Davies for 14 (28 balls), 178-6.

Tom Wells came to the wicket and with Danny Gilbert leading the way saw them to victory on 196-6 in 49 overs, Danny Gilbert was 34no (29 balls) and Tom Wells 4no (10 balls).

The Fleetwood bowling was Matthew Siddall 3-53 from 15 overs, Declan Clerkin 1-23 off 10, Jeremy Davies 1-35 from 8, Vathsal Govind 1-43 off 11 and James Amor 0-36 from 5.

Kendal v Leyland

Kendal won the toss at Shap Road and decided to bat first, Freddie Fallows got off to a blistering start hitting three fours off Ross Bretherton's first over but was out first ball off his next caught by Karl Cross for 12 (7 balls), 17-1.

Max Winskill came in next but soon lost his partner Evan Williams caught by Ross Bretherton off Andrew Jacques for 8 (11 balls), 23-2. Sam Dutton joined Winskill but he became Ross Bretherton's next victim caught by Iain Critchley for 10 (56 balls), 38-3.

Finlay Richardson replaced Duttom and with Winskill doubled the score only for Max Winskill to fall lbw to Iain Critchley for 14 (56 balls), 79-4. The new man in was Bradley Earl but with only four runs added Ross Bretherton trapped Finlay Richardson lbw for 34 (44 balls), 83-5.

The next batsman in was Lewis Richardson and with Bradley Earl leading the way kept the scoreboard ticking over, Iain Critchley made the breakthrough having Lewis Richardson lbw for 9 (35 balls), 124-6.

Tim Boyd was Earl's new partner and they were looking good until Tim Boyd was caught behind by Adam Sexton off Andrew Jacques for 23 (44 balls), 187-7. The new man in was Louis Backhouse and with Earl took the score past the two hundred, Andrew Jacques claimed his third wicket that of Bradley Earl caught by James Rounding for 92 (72 balls) (10x4, 5x6), 208-8.

That was the last success for the visitors as Kendal closed on 230-8 in their 50 overs with Louis Backhouse 17no (9 balls) and Sam Sharp 5no (5 balls).

Ross Bretherton took 3-35 from 15 overs, Andrew Jacques 3-67 off 13, Iain Critchley 2-79 from 15 and Kurtis Watson 0-46 off 7.

The Leyland reply never got off the ground losing the first five wickets for 10 runs, Sam Sharp started the collapse with two wickets in his first over bowling James Critchley for 0 (2 balls) 0-1. the incoming batsman Zak Willox took a run followed two balls later with Karl Cross being caught by Evan Williams for 0 (7 balls), 1-2.

Kurtis Watson replaced Cross but quickly became wicket number three for Sam Sharp bowled for 0 (3 balls), 1-3. Ross Bretherton was next in but disaster for the visitors when he was run out by Evan Williams for 2 (5 balls), 8-4. Jacob Wright was the new batsman but two runs later lost Zak Willox bowled by Louis Backhouse for 1 (23 balls), 10-5.

Andrew Makinson was Wright's new partner and they had doubled the score when Sam Sharp struck again having Jacob Wright caught by Sam Dutton for 6 (19 balls), 21-6. James Rounding was next in but was soon out caught behind by Finlay Richardson off Louis Backhouse for 3 (10 balls), 28-7.

Iain Critchley came in at nine, Sam Sharp claimed his fifth wicket Iain Critchley caught by Freddie Fallows for 4 (7 balls), 37-8. The incoming batsman was Adam Sexton, The Leyland innings closed on 56-9 in 23 overs with Adam Sexton caught behind by Finlay Richardson off Freddie Fallows for 9 (17 balls) leaving Andrew Makinson undefeated on 25 (46 balls). Andrew Jacques was unable to bat.

Sam Sharp's figures were 5-26 from 10 overs, Louis Backhouse 2-11 off 10, Freddie Fallows 1-10 from 2 and Chris Miller 0-6 off 1.

Longridge v Mawdesley

Longridge won the toss at the Newsham Memorial ground and chose to bat first, Their opening pair Joshua Mullin and Taariq Chiecktey gave the hosts a good base with an opening stand of 83 broken when Joshua Mullin was caught by Ben Munslow off Joshua Adamson for 17 (62 balls), 83-1.

Luke Platt joined Chiecktey and they continued the good work until Luke Platt was caught by Joshua Adamson off Dominic Hendricks for 22 (38 balls), 140-2.

Zac Christie was the next man in and saw his partner Taariq Chiecktey reach his century but shortly afterwards he was out caught by Joshua Unsworth off Neil O'Malley for 113 (104 balls), (15x4, 2x6), 204-3.

Rob Hollinghurst was in next and he and Zac Christie continued to pile on the runs as Longridge closed on 302-3 in their 50 overs with Zac Christie 86no (74 balls) and Rob Hollinghurst 34no (24 balls).

The Mawdesley bowling was Neil O'Malley 1-20 from 2 overs, Joshua ADamson 1-67 off 12, Dominic Hendricks 1-68 from 9, Daniel Unsworth 0-35 off 5, Joshua Unsworth 0-41 from 13 and Christopher Andrews 0-44 off 9.

In reply the visitors lost an early wicket Fyffe Dennis bowled by Tom Howarth for 4 (25 balls), 17-1, Christopher Andrews was in at three but with the score on 35 both he and his partner Daniel Unsworth were out, Christopher Andrews fell lbw to Jacob Procter for 5 (15 balls), 35-2, Daniel Unsworth was caught by Luke Platt off Jake Durnell for 16 (35 balls), 35-3.

The two new batsmen were Dominic Hendricks and Nathan Trengrove and they began to rebuild the innings, they were going steadily along until Nathan Trengrove was stumped by Tom Turner off Alex Mason for 24 (48 balls), 94-4.

Lee Berrie joined Hendricks and continued the chase but was out stumped by Tom Turner off Jake Durnell for 14 (22 balls), 123-5. Ben Munslow replaced Berrie but any chance of victory went with Dominic Hendricks bowled by Jake Durnell for 53 (70 balls), 138-6.

Joshua Unsworth was in next and he with Ben Munslow kept the score moving along, in the last over Ben Munslow fell caught by Zac Christie off Alex Mason for 33 (46 balls), 197-7.

The Mawdesley innings closed on 204-7 in their 50 overs with Joshua Unsworth 29no (36 balls) and new man in Joshua Adamson 2no (3 balls).

For Longridge Jake Durnell took 3-47 from 13 overs, Alex Mason 2-74 off 14, Tom Howarth 1-8 from 6, Jacob Procter 1-34 off 8 and Gabriel Dowthwaite 0-18 from 9

St Annes v Settle

St Annes won the toss at Vernon Road and elected to bat first, Yohan De Silva and Nathan Armstrong gave the home side a good foundation with an opening partnership of 84 broken by Amar Ullah bowling Yohan De Silva for 22 (55 balls), 84-1.

The third man in for the hosts was Lukman Vahaluwala who went quickly caught by William Vause off Amar Ullah for 4 (7 balls), 88-2. Next in was Nathan Bolus but with only seven runs added he was caught behind by Robbie Davidson for 4 (20 balls), 95-3.

Luke Jardine was next in but became Amar Ullah's third wicket lbw for 5 (13 balls), 102-4. Disaster struck for the hosts with the loss of two wickets two runs later, new man Tom Bradley was caught by Ashen Silva off Amar Ullah for 0 (5 balls), 104-4, this was followed by the run out of Nathan Armstrong by Lloyd Smith for 60 (129 balls), 104-6.

Joe Davies and Joe Hayton were the two new batsmen but with only five runs added once more two wickets fell on the same score, Joe Davies was caught by Lloyd Smith off Ashen Silva for 0 (10 balls), 109-7, next in Ryan Birkman was caught by Ben Hulse off Ashen Silva for 0 (4 balls), 109-8.

Mitch Bolus joined Joe Hayton but was soon out bowled by Ashen Silva for 5 (10 balls), 115-9, James Bradley came in at eleven, the St Annes innings closed on 133 all out in 49.4 overs with Joe Hayton caught by Amar Ullah off William Davidson for 13 (26 balls), leaving James Bradley 10no (20 balls).

Amar Ullah lead the way for the visitors with 4-21 from 15 overs, Ashen Silva took 3-44 off 15 with William Davidson 2-18 from 8.4, William Vause took 0-21 off 4 and Lloyd Smith 0-23 from 7.

The Settle opening pair set a good base with an opening partnership of 87 broken by Tom Bradley bowling Lloyd Smith for 57 (76 balls), 87-1.

Ashen Silva joined Archie Phillipson and with Phillipson leading the way reached their goal closing on 136-1 in 29.3 overs with Archie Phillipson 55no (75 balls) and Ashen Silva 16no (26 balls).

The St Annes bowing was Tom Bradley 1-27 from 5.3 overs, Nathan Bolus 0-8 off 2, Joe Hayton 0-13 from 4, Lukman Vahaluwala 0-14 off 5, Yohan De Silva 0-21 from 5, Mitch Bolus 0-21 off 3 and Joe Davies 0-24 from 5.
