The Northern Cricket League Review

The Seventeenth round of matches in the Northern Premier League 2024 season saw leaders Fleetwood defeat Chorley and Leyland's win against Longridge moves them up to second.

Netherfield beat Mawdesley and Fulwood and Broughton defeated St Annes.

There was an exciting winning draw between Euxton and Garstang.

The game between Kendal and Settle was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

DIVISION ONE:

Chorley v Fleetwood

Chorley second in the table entertained Fleetwood top of the table at Windsor Park in an 80 over match, Fleetwood won the toss and decided to bat first. Edwin Moulton had an early success trapping Andy Drake lbw for 11 (18 balls), 18-1

Vathsal Govind came in at number three and with Adam Sharrocks kept the scoreboard ticking over until Adam Sharrocks was out caught by Kieran Yould off Sam Steeple for 28 (51 balls), 66-2, Scott Whittaker was the new batsman but was soon out bowled by Matt Dawson for 2 (15 balls), 83-3.

Harry McAleer replaced Whittaker, Jurie Snyman quickly acounted for him lbw for 4 (14 balls), 92-4. Charlie Clark joined Vathsal Govind, Matt Dawson claimed his second wicket Charlie Clark stumped by Ben Simpkins for 10 (10 balls), 107-5.

Jeremy Davies was the next man in and with Govind were going well until Vathsal Govind was caught behind by Ben Simpkins off Edwin Moulton for 52 (79 balls), 144-6..

Declan Clerkin was the new batsman but lost his partner Jeremy Davies caught behind by Ben Simpkins off Edwin Moulton for 32 (37 balls), 161-7. Declan Clerkin's new partner was Nathan Bend and they saw the visitors close on 175-7 in their 40 overs with Clerkin 10no, (10 balls) and Bend 12no (7 balls).

Edwin Moulton had the best figures for the hosts with 3-22 from 9 overs with Matt Dawson 2-44 off 11, Jurie Snyman 1-25 from 7, Sam Steeple 1-53 off 9 and Will Moulton 0-19 from 4

The hosts got off to a bad start losing Will Moulton caught behind by Harry McAleer off James Amor for 5 (13 balls), 5-1. Edwin Moulton was the Chorley number three but lost his partner Miller Childs lbw to James Amor for 13 (27 balls), 28-2.

Julie Snyman joined Edwin Moulton, James Amor claimed his third wicket bowling Edwin Moulton for 14 (27 balls), 46-3. Jurie Snyman was joined by Zayn Wadiwala, the introduction of Matthew Siddall into the attack saw success in his second over having Jurie Snyman caught behind by Harry McAleer for 8 (18 balls), 46-4.

The new batsman was Ben Simpkins who became Matthew Siddall's next victim caught by James Amor for 13 (23 balls), 68-5, The hosts were in trouble and it got even worse with new batsman Joseph Tiffin out caught and bowled by Vathsal Govind for 4 (6 balls), 73-6. Kieran Yould came in but with only one run added he was caught by Andy Drake off Matthew Siddall for 0 (2 balls), 74-7.

Zayn Wadiwala had a new partner in Alexander Howarth but their hopes of saving the game ended with Matthew Siddal having Alexander Howarth caught behind by Harry McAleer for 7 (16 balls), 91-8.

Matthew Siddall claimed his fifth wicket trapping Sam Steeple lbw for 0 (6 balls), 93-9, The Cholrey innings came to a close on 100 in 32 overs with Zayn Wadiwala's fighting innings coming to an end caught by Scott Whittaker off Matthew Siddall for 24 (42 balls) with Matt Dawson 6no (12 balls).

The Fleetwood hero was Matthew Siddall with 6-14 from 10overs supported by James Amor 3-22 off 6, Vathsal Govind 1-41 from 8 and Declan Clerkin 0-18 off 8.

Euxton v Garstang

In a reduced 84 over game at Balshaw Park Euxton won the toss and chose to bat first, They got off to a very good start then lost two quick wickets, Aneeq Hassan was first out bowled by Danny Gilbert for 38 (39 balls), 59-1, New batsman Max Harper fell three runs later caught by Danny Gilbert off Tom Higson for 2 (16 balls), 62-2.

James Bone joined Zane Nirodi and their partnership was 131 when Zane Nirodi was caught by Josepn Pearson off Tom Higson for 72 (109 balls), 193-3. Zane Gilder 3no (6 balls) replaced Nirodi and with James Bone 72no (83 balls) saw the hosts close on 201-3 in their 42 overs.

The Garstang bowling was Tom Higson 2-50 from 12, Danny Gilbert 1-42 off 12, Charlie Pearson 0-13 from 6, Joe Barlow 0-38 off 7 and Ian Walling 0-45 from 5.

The visitors openers Imran Butt and Tom Higson gave them a great platform with an opening partnership of 101 broken by James Bone bowling Tom Higson for 55 (78 balls), 101-1, Number three Matthew Crowther became James Bone's second wicket caught by Zane Gilder for 3 (24 balls), 121-2.

Joseph Pearson joined Imran Butt and with Butt leading the way continued the chase, Joseph Pearson was next out lbw to Joseph Bowden for 10 (10 balls), 142-3, Ashton Charles was the new batsman, there were two overs remaining and the visitors were on 188-3, five runs had been scored off the over when tragedy struck with Imran Butt out caught by Jack Shovelton off Zane Gilder for 96 (118 balls) (14x4 1x6), 194-5

Charlie Pearson came to partner Ashton Charles, six runs were required for victory off the last over bowled by Joseph Bowden, Bowden bowled well and it came to the last ball with two runs required for victory, Ashton Charles was run out on the second run by Zane Nirodi for 15 (20 balls) as Garstang closed on 201-5 meaning the game was drawn, Charlie Parkinson was the not out batsman on 1 (4 balls).

For Euxton James Bone took 2-54 from 14 overs, Zane Gilder 1-20 off 2, Joseph Bowden 1-57 from 14, Jack Shovelton 0-12 off 5, Joseph Barker 0-22 from 4 and Louis Sweeney 0-23 off 3.

Fulwood & Broughton v St Annes

St Annes won the toss at the Highfield ground and elected to bat first but did not get off to the best of starts losing Nathan Armstrong caught by Matt Smith off Khalil Patel for 5 (19 balls), 15-1.

The vistitors number three was Lukman Vahaluwala, he lost his partner Yohan De Silva bowled by Khalil Patel for 13 (29 balls), 20-2. Nathan Bolus joined Vahaluwala and they had put on 50 runs when Lukman Vahaluwala was bowled by Lewis Wellings for 28 (38 balls), 70-3.

Luke Jardine replaced Vahaluwala and with Bolus took the score to 100, Ockert Erasmus broke the partnership having Nathan Bolus caught by Matt Smith for 34 (65 balls), 100-4, next in was Tom Bradley but he was bowled by Ewen Mansford for 7 (17 balls), 111-5, Ockert Erasmus dismissed new man Ryan Birkman caught by Mark Smith for 0 (5 balls), 112-6.

Mitch Bolus was Luke Jardine's new partner and they tried to rebuild the innings, Ewen Mansford made the breakthrough having Mitch Bolus caught by Brendan Morris for 2 (14 balls), 129-7, one run later disaster struck for the visitors with the loss of Luke Jardine for 34 (65 balls), 130-8.

Joe Davies and Joe Hayton were the two new batsmen and they battled to keep the scoreboard ticking over, Ewen Mansford claimed his fourth victim bowling Joe Davies for 11 (23 balls), 157-9.

Last man in was James Bradley and with Joe Hayton they saw St Annes close on 164-9 in their 50 overs with Joe Hayton 17no (15 balls) and James Bradley 5no (7 balls).

Ewen Mansford took 4-26 from 12 overs, Khalil Patel 2-28 off 9, Ockert Erasmus 2-48 from 15, Lewis Wellings 1-23 off 4 and Jon Fenton 0-33 from 10.

The hosts reply was steady until they lost three wickets for eight runs, first to go was Matt Smith caught by Luke Jardine off Lukman Vahaluwala for 14 (22 balls), 22-1. new man in Brendan Morris became victim number two for Lukman Vahaluwala caught behind by James Bradley for 4 (4 balls), 26-2.

Ockert Erasmus replaced Morris but with only four runs added Ewen Mansford was bowled by Mitch Bolus for 7 (35 balls), 30-3. Ben Rosbottom joined Erasmus and they were progressing well until Joe Hayton had Ben Rosbottom caught by Yohan De Silva for 34 (60 balls), 98-4.

James McWilliam was next in and with Erasmus looked to be heading towards victory until he was bowled by Lukman Vahaluwala for 12 (27 balls), 143-5. Ben Parkinson became Erasmus's next partner and with victory in sight Lukman Vahaluwla trapped Ockert Erasmus lbw for 76 (94 balls), 160-6.

That was the last success for the visitors as new batsman Jon Fenton 5no (6 balls) and Ben Parkinson 13no (20 balls) saw the hosts to victory on 168-6 in 44.3 overs.

The St Annes bowling was Lukman Vahaluwala 4-45 from 15 overs, Joe Hayton 1-32 off 7, Mitch Bolus 1-46 from 15, Tom Bradley 0-19 off 3, Yohan De Silva 0-20 from 4 and Joe Davies 0-6 off 0.3.

Kendal v Settle

The match was Abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Leyland v Longridge

Leyland won the toss at the Stanning Memorial ground and chose to bat first, They were 148 all out in their 50 overs thanks to Zak Willox 32, number eight Luke Hands 30 and number nine Iain Critchley 30 with 16 from Ross Bretherton.

The wickets were split amongst the Longridge bowlers, Alex Mason 3-27 from 15 overs, Jake Durnell 3-28 off 15, Tom Howarth 2-15 from 3, Jacob Proctor 1-47 off 9 with Gabriel Dowthwaite 0-30 from 8.

In reply Longridge were bowled out for 63 in 26.1 overs with only two batsmen reaching double figures, Rob Hollinghurst 22 and Tom Howarth 18.

Ross Bretherton was the man who did the damage with 7-24 from 13.1 overs supported by Andrew Jacques 3-24 off 10 and Luke Hands 0-9 from 3.

Netherfield v Mawdeley

Netherfield won the toss at Parkside Road and invited the visitors to bat first in a reduced 68 over match, they were going quite nicely until two wickets fell on the same score, Fyffe Denis was first out bowled by Josh Wills for 11 (27 balls), 28-1, two balls later he bowled Christopher Andrews for 0 (2 balls), 28-2.

Dominic Hendricks became Daniel Unsworth's new partner but with their partnership on 30 Daniel Unsworth was caught by Reece Irving off Riley Vernon for 28 (55 balls), 58-3, Nathan Trengove was next in and with Dominic Hendricks leading the way they moved the score along until Nathan Trengove was caught by Will Beeden off Riley Vernon for 8 (17 balls), 90-4.

Lee Berrie joined Hendricks but soon became Riley Vernon's third wicket stumped by Lewis Edge for 16 (20 balls), 118-5. Josh Wills was re-introduced into the attack with devasting results, only Dominic Hendricks showing any resistance. He bowled the incoming batsman Joshua Unsworth for 5 (8 balls), 127-6.

Dominc Hendricks fighting innings came to a close caught by Reece Irving off Josh Wills for 62 (68 balls), 136-7. He then took his fifth wicket bowling Joshua Adamson for 1 (4 balls), 142-8. Ben Munslow 6no (2 balls) and Louis Royal 0no (1 ball) saw the visitors close on 142-8 in their 34 overs.

Josh Wills lead the way with 5-24 from 9 overs, Riley Vernon took 3-44 off 10, Oli Wileman 0-18 from 4, Matt Jackson 0-23 off 5 and Isaac Medhurst 0-30 from 6.

Netherfield got off to a good and steady reply until they lost three wickts for three runs, Josh Dixon was the first man out lbw to Joshua Unsworth for 30 (51 balls), 44-1, three runs later new man Ben Barrow was caught behind by Fyffe Dennis off Christopher Andrews for 0 (3 balls), 47-2. Opener Reece Irving was next to go bowled by Joshua Unsworth for 9 (31 balls), 47-3.

The two new batsmen were John Huck and Riley Vernon, Joshua Unsworth struck again bowling Riley Vernon for 2 (12 balls), 58-4, Will Beeden joined John Huck and with Huck scoring freely moved the total to 80 when Will Beeden was caught by Joshua Unsworth off Neil O'Malley for 6 (7 balls), 80-5.

Lewis Edge replaced Beeden and was scoring at nearly a run a ball until he was bowled by Dominic Henrdicks for 26 (29 balls), 132-6. Oli Wileman came to the wicket a hit a run off his first ball, John Huck then hit a six and a four to claim victory for the home side on 143-6 in 32.5 overs. John Huck was 57no (63 balls) and Oli Wileman 1no (1 ball).

For Mawdesley Joshua Unsworth took 3-32 from 11 overs, Neil O'Malley 1-19 off 3, Christopher Andrews 1-24 from 6, Dominic Hendricks 1-25 off 2.5 and Joshua Adamson 0-38from 10.
