The Northern Cricket League Review

The Sixteenth round of matches in the Northern Premier League 2024 season saw another rain effected day. The relegtion battle between St Annes and Euxton was the only full game played with a resounding win for St Annes

There were winning draws for Chorley against Garstang, Longridge against Netherfield and Settle versus Mawdesley

The matches Blackpool v Leyland, Fleetwood v Fulwood & Broughton were abandoned

DIVISION ONE:

Blackpool v Leyland

Blackpool won the toss at Stanley Park and invited the visitors to bat first, Matthew Grindley made an early breakthrough having James Critchley caught by Shivam Chaudhary for 4 (4 balls), 16-1.

Zac Willox was the Leyland number three and with Karl Cross were making good progress, Shivam Chaudhary broke the stand, Zac Willox was caught by Matthew Grindley for 20 (42 balls), 75-2.

Ross Bretherton was next in but lost his partner Karl Cross run out for 49 (83 balls) by Daniel Dixon, 78-3, Jacob Wright replaced Cross but was soon out lbw to Josh Boyne for 7 (14 balls), 92-4.

Andrew Makinson joined Ross Bretherton, Matthew Grindley returned to the attack and took his second wicket Andrew Makinson caught by Josh Boyne for 14 (31 balls), 116-5.

James Rounding was Ross Ross Bretherton's next partner but lost him caught by Daniel Dixon off Josh Boyne for 21 (62 balls), 130-6, James Rounding was then run out by Harry Birkman for 11 (16 balls), 131-7.

Matthew Grindley quickly accounted for the new batsman Luke Hands bowling him for 1 (7 balls), 132-8. Iain Critchley 17no (21 balls) and Adam Sexton 7no (22 balls) saw the visitors close on 161-8 in their 50 overs.

The Blackpool bowling was Matthew Grindley 3-52 from 14 overs, Josh Boyne 2-23 off 15, Shivam Chaudhary 1-17 from 11, Harry Birkman 0-21 off 4 and Jamie Thomson 0-42 from 6.

The Blackpool openers Daniel Dixon and Dylan Henshall got the hosts off to a good start, Daniel Dixon was out for 15 (27 balls) caught by James Critchley off Luke Hands, 39-1, Shivam Chaudhary 9no (3 balls) joined Dylan Henshall 21no (20 balls) but the rains came and the game was abandoned with Blackpool 48-1 in 8 overs.

Luke Hands took 1-23 from 4 overs and Ross Bretherton 0-24 off 4 overs.

Fleetwood v Fulwood & Broughton

Fleetwood won the toss at Broadwater and put the visitors into bat, Ewen Mansford and Simon Kerrigan opened and were going well until Ewen Mansford was caught behind by Harry McAleer off James Amor for 11 (28 balls), 36-1.

Brendan Morris came in at three but on reaching 21 (37 balls) he was caught behind by Harry McAleer off Matthew Siddall, 70-2. Jon Fenton was next in but lost his partner Simon Kerrigan caught by Jeremy Davies off Vithsal Govind for 37 (86 balls), 80-3.

Ben Rosbottom replaced Kerrigan, Matthew Siddall claimed his second wicket Jon Fenton bowled for 3 (8 balls), 91-4. James McWilliam came in next and with Ben Rosbottom were going well until Vithsal Govind bowled James McWilliam for 12 (22 balls), 130-5.

Vithsal Govind claimed his third wicket Ben Parkinson caught by Nathan Bend for 5 (6 balls), 152-6, Matthew Smith was in next but fell caught by Nathan Bend off James Amor for 15 (12 balls), 191-7.

James Amor took two quick wicket and claimed his fifth wicket, James Lupton was caught by Matthew Siddall for 0 (6 balls), 200-8. next ball he had Marcus Allen caught by Siddall for 0 (1 ball), 200-9. The innings closed with Ben Rosbottom out on the last ball of the innings caught by Andy Drake off Vithsal Govind for 84 (96 balls) as the visitors were all out for 205 with Dom Jackson 1no (1 ball).

James Amor took 5-46 from 9 overs, Vithsal Govind 3-52 off 15, Matthew Siddall 2-31 from 13, Jeremy Davies 0-35 off 5 and Declan Clerkin 0-35 from 8.

The hosts got off to a bad start in reply to the visitors total, both openers went with the score on 11, Tomas King was caught by Dom Jackson off Jon Fenton for 4 (13 balls), 11-1, Andy Drake followed lbw to Marcus Allen for 7 (11 balls), 11-2.

Vithsal Govind and Charlie Clark were the new batsman, on reaching 12 (20 balls) Charlie Clark was caught by Mark Smith off Ewen Mansford 31-3. Harry McAleer replaced Drake but the weather intervened and the game was abandoned with Fleetwood 37-3 in 11 overs.

For the visitors Ewen Mansford took 1-9 from 2 overs, Jon Fenton 1-12 off 5 and Marcus Allen 1016 from 4.

Garstang v Chorley

Chorley won the toss at the Riverside Sports ground and chose to bat first, Will Moulton was soon out bowled by Ian Walling for 3 (12 balls), 10-1.

Harry Barclay replaced Moulton but with the score approaching 50 he was bowled by Tom Higson for 17 (56 balls). 48-2. the new man in was Jurie Snyman and with Miller Childs had nearly doubled the score when the visitors lost two wickets on the same score, Imran Butt had Miller Childs caught by Ian Walling for 56 (85 balls), 90-3. Jurie Snyman followed caught by Imran Butt off Tom Higson for 11 (17 balls), 90-4

Edwin Moulton and Zayn Wadiwala were the new batsmen, Zayn Wadiwala was soon out caught by Ian Walling off Tom Higson for for 1 (11 balls), 93-5. Next in was Ben Simpkins and with Edwin Moulton were turning the game around, Ernie Collinson broke the partnership having Ben Simpkins caught Joseph Pearson for 18 (42 balls), 131-6.

Joseph Tiffin replaced Simpkins but lost his partner Edwin Moulton stumped by Matthew Crowther off Ernie Collinson for 29 (52 balls), 148-7. That was the last success for the hosts with James Dunn 22no (10 balls) and Joseph Tiffin 12no (15 balls) seeing the visitors close on 174-7 oin their 50 overs.

For Garstang Tom Higson took 3-29 from 15 overs, Ernie Collinson 2-43 off 6, Ian Walling 1-20 from 8, Imran Butt 1-29 off 9, Edward Pearson 0-18 from 1 and Danny Gilbert 0-31 off 11.

The hosts got off to a terrible start losing Imran Butt off the second ball of the innings caught behind by Harry Barclay off Edwin Moulton for 0 (2 balls), 0-1.

In at number three was Matthew Crowther and with Tom Higson started to gain momentum until Jurie Snyman had Matthew Crowther lbw for 10 (20 balls), 46-2.

Next in was Joseph Pearson, disaster for the hosts with the loss of three quick wickets, Tom Higson was the first to go bowled by Jurie Snyman for 48 (41 balls), 67-3, Joseph Pearson followed caught by Ben Simpkins off Matt Dawson for 2 (17 balls), 67-4. Jurie Snyman claimed his third wicket bolwing Michael Walling for 1 (5 balls), 70-5.

Mark Walling and Danny Gilbert were the batsmen left to pick up the pieces, they had taken the score past the hundred when Edwin Moulton bowled Mark Walling for 19 (34 balls), 109-6. Ashton Charles was next in but the rains came and the game was over with Garstang 117-6 in 26 overs with Danny Gilbert 24no (36 balls) and Ashton Charles 1no (5 balls).

Jurie Snyman lead the way for Chorley with 3-16 from 7 overs, Edwin Moulton took 2-34 off 6, Matt Dawson 1-12 from 2, Sam Steeple 0-17 off 4 and James Dunn 0-17 from 2.

Longridge v Netherfield

Netherfield won the toss at the Newsham Memorial ground and asked the hosts to bat first, Joshua Mullin and Taariq Chiecktey got them off to a good start broken when Taariq Chiecktey was caught by Riley Vernon off Josh Wills for 31 (34 balls), 56-1.

Luke Platt was the host's number three and with Mullin took the score past the hundred, Oli Wileman made the breakthrough bowling Joshua Mullin for 56 (75 (balls) 115-2. Zac Christie was the new batsman and was scoring freely until Oli Wileman took two wickets in two balls, he had Zac Christie caught by Reece Irving for 40 (43 balls), 171-3. next ball Rob Hollinghurst was lbw for 0 (1 ball), 171-4.

That was the last success for the visitors as Luke Platt 67no (113 balls) and Tom Turner 44no (40 balls) took the hosts to 251-4 in their 50 overs.

Oli Wileman took 3-54 from 15 overs, Josh Wills 1-43 off 9, Riley Vernon 0-40 from 9, Samuel Medhurst 0-46 off 7 and Matt Jackson 0-62 from 10.

In reply Netherfield lost two early wickets, Josh Dixon the first to go caught by Tom Howarth off Jake Durnell for 12 (17 balls), 17-1, two runs later Reece Irving was caught by Joshua Mullin off Jacob Proctor for 3 (15 balls), 19-2.

Ben Barrow and John Huck set about rebuilding the innings and were doing well until Ben Barrow fell lbw to Alex Mason for 31 (43 balls), 70-3, Riley Vernon replaced Barrow and with Huck continued to make progress, Ian Simpson broke the partnership having John Huck stumped by Tom Turner for 50 (75 balls), 151-4.

Will Beeden joined Vernon, Ian Simpson struck taking two wickets in two balls, Will Beeden was caught by Taariq Chiecktey for 8 (18 balls), next ball he bowled Lewis Edge for 0 (1 ball), 167-6.

Oli Wilman was next in but the weather brought the game to an end with the visitors 186-6 in 40 overs with Riley Vernon 55no (61 balls) and Oli Wileman 14no (12 balls).

For Longridge Ian Simpson took 3-16 from 4 overs, Jacob Protor 1-42 off 8, Jake Durnell 1-53 from 15 and Alex Mason 1-68 off 13.

Mawdesley v Settle

Mawdesley won the toss at Rectory Field and put the visitors into bat and they made 164 all out in their 50 overs thanks to William Davidson 46 (31 balls) with support from Archie Phillipson 25 (64 balls), Benjamin Hulse 19 (38 balls) and Amar Ullah 12 (48 balls).

All the Mawdesley bowlers took a wicket lead by Daniel Unsworth 3-57 from 14 overs, Dominic Hendricks 2-12 off 2, Joshua Adamson 2-26 from 13, Neil O'Malley 2-34 off 11 and Joshua Unsworth 1-30 from 10.

In reply Mawdesley were 102 for 6 in 31.5 overs when the weather intervened, Dominic Hendricks top scored with 40no (65 balls) with Christopher Andrews 37 (63 balls).

For Settle Ashen Silva took 3-23 from 12 overs, Amar Ullah 1-11 off 3.5, Lloyd Smith 1-19 from 4, Will Vause 1-23 off 5 and William Davidson 0-22 from 7.

St Annes v Euxton

Euxton won the toss in the relegation battle at the Vernon Road ground and invited the hosts to bat first, Yohan De Silva and Nathan Armstrong gave them a brilliant start with a stand of 153 broken when Zane Gilder bowled Nathan Armstrong for 66 (74 balls), 153-1.

Lukman Vahaluwala was the St Annes number three and continued the run spree, the partnership was 77 when Lukman Vahaluwala was stumped by Danny Curtis for 45 (36 balls), 230-8.

Yohan De Silva now had a new partner Ryan Birkman caught by Sam Sweeney off Aneeq Hassan for 4 (9 balls), 238-3, Nathan Bolus joined De Silva and was out in the final over of the innings stumped by Danny Curtis off Aneeq Hassan for 15 (14 balls), 297-4.

Luke Jardine came in and scored a run off the last ball as St Annes closed on 298-4 in their 50 overs with Yohan De Silva carrying his bat for 151no (169 balls) (20x4, 2x6) and Luke Jardine 1no (1 ball).

The Euxton bowling was Aneeq Hassan 3-52 from 8 overs, Zane Gilder 1-43 off 9, Joseph Barker 0-29 from 4, Jack Shovelton 0-32 off 4, Joseph Bowden 0-33 from 8, Louis Sweeney 0-46 off 7 and Ben Houghton 0-58 from 10.

The visitors got off to the worse start possible losing Ben Houghton bowled off the first ball of the innings by Lukman Vahaluwala for 0, 0-1, Zane Gilder came in at three but lost his partner Aneeq Hassan caught by Nathan Bolus off Mitch Bolus for 4 (13 balls), 12-2.

Sam Sweeney joined Zane Gilder, Yohan De Silva was introduced into the attack and took two wickets in two balls in his first over, he bowled Zane Gilder for 9 (17 balls), 24-3 next ball he trapped Zane Nirodi lbw for 0 (1 ball), 24-4.

Jack Shovelton replaced Nirodi and with Seeeney moved the score along until he was caught behind by James Bradley off Joe Hayton for 17 (18 balls), 51-5. Hayton then bowled new man Daniel Barber for 4 (11 balls), 51-6.

Joseph Barker came in and quickly became wicket number three for Joe Hayton lbw for 0 (11 balls), 53-7. Sam Sweeney had a new partner in Louis Sweeney, Lukman Vahaluwala was re-introduced into the attack and had Sam Sweeney lbw for 21 (37 balls), 61-8.

The Euxton innings came to an end with the last two wickets falling on the same score, Louis Sweeney's fighting innings came to an end when he was caught behind by James Bradley off Lukman Vahaluwala for 9 (35 balls), 80-9. Danny Curtis was out caught by Mitch Bolus off Yohan De Silva for 13 (20 balls) as the visitors were all out for 80 in 27.2 overs with Joseph Bowden 0no (1 ball).

This victory gave St Annes some hope of avoiding relegation in the coming games.

The wickets takers were Lukman Vahaluwala 3-8 from 7 overs, Joe Hayton 3-17 off 8, Yohan De Silva 3-37 from 8.2 and Mitch Bolus 1-17 off 4.
