The Northern Cricket League Review

Round 22 of the Northern Premier League saw Kendal crowned Northern Premier League Champions for 2023. Their win over Fulwood and Broughton and Chorley's draw against Longridge saw Kendal win the league by 1 point.

Garstang won to finish third, there were also wins for Blackpool, Fleetwood and Netherfield. Penrith and Eccleston (Chorley) are the relegated clubs

Blackpool v Eccleston (Chorley)

Blackpool won the toss at Stanley Park and put the visitors into bat, Tom Potter and Martyn Jame Brierley opened and both fell to William Vause, Tom Potter was first to go caught by Shivam Chaudhary for 1 (6 balls), 2-1. Martyn James Brierley quickly followed also caught by Shivam Chaudhary for 2 (14 balls), 8-2

Thomas Foster and Matthew Ashcroft were the new batsmen and they looked to be turning the game around until Shivam Chaudhary had Thomas Foster lbw for 27 (63 balls), 62-3, Reece Thomas came in next and with Ashcroft took the total past the hubdred, Shivam Chaudhary once again broke the partnership having Matthew Ashcroft caught by Kasim Munir for 37 (71 balls), 108-4

Adam Norris joined Thomas and they kept the scoreboard ticking over, Jamie Thomson was the man to make the break through, Reece Thomas lbw for 42 (33 balls), 131-5. Alex Brooks was the new batsman but was soon out bowled by Josh Boyne for 0 (6 balls), 138-6.

Nick Fowler replaced Brooks but with only eight runs added he was caught by Josh Boyne off Shivam Chaudhary for 0 (7 balls), 146-7, Cameron Smith was Adam Norris's next partner and they moved the score along until Cameron Smith was bowled by Thomas King for 15 (20 balls), 174-8.

Jack McKenna face three balls and was bowled by Josh Boyne for 0 as Eccleston (Chorley) closed on 174-9 in 44.5 overs with Adam Norris 27no (46 balls).

The Blackpool bowling was Shivam Chaudhary 3-43 from 11 overs, Tomas King 2-0 off 0.5, William Vause 2-24 from 5, Jamie Thomson 1-31 off 6, Josh Boyne 1-40 from 11, Matthew Grindley 0-8 off 8, Paul Danson 0-6 from 1 and Ben Howarth 0-14 off 2

Tomas King and Kasim Munir were the Blackpool openers but with the score on 23 Tomas King was caught by Nick Fowler off Jack McKenna for 14 (11 balls),23-1, Shivam Chaudhary was the hosts number three but on reaching 21 (23 balls) he was bowled by Reece Thomas, 54-2.

Josh Boyne was next in and with Munir moved the score along, Reece Thomas broke the partnership having Kasim Muinr caught by Thomas Foster for 17 (40 balls), 75-3. Dylan Henshall replaced Munir and with Boyne looked to be steering tthe hosts to victory when Reece Thomas claimed his third wicket bowling Dylan Henshall for 41 (40 balls), 159-4

Jake Muncaster was the new batsman, Josh Boyne 74no (55 balls) took control and with Jake Muncaster 3no (5 balls) saw the hosts home on 181-4 in 28.5 overs.

For Eccleston (Chorley) Reece Thomas took 3-52 from 10 overs, Jack McKenna 1-48 off 7, Martyn James Brierley 0-10 from 0.5, Cameron Smith 0-17 off 4, Thomas Foster 0-13 from 1 and Nick Fowler 0-31 off 6

Chorley v Longridge

Longridge won the toss at Windsor Park and invited the hosts to bat first, Will Moulton and Alfie Dobson opened, Will Moulton was the first to go lbw to Caleb Bradford for 15 (19 balls), 24-1. Roshen Silva was the Chorley number three. Caleb Bradford struck for the visitors having Alfie Dobson caught and bowled for 20 (21 balls), 53-2

Joshua Pistorius was the new batsman scoring at nearly a run a ball until he fell caught by Joshua Mullin off Zach Proctor for 13 (16 balls), 84-3, next in was Zayn Wadiwala but on reaching 11 (26 balls) he was caught by Matthew De Villiers off Jake Durnell, 102-4.

Harry Barclay joined De Silva, Jake Durnell struck for the visitors having Roshen Silva caught by Matthew De Villiers for 43 (67 balls), 110-5. Edwin Moulton was the new man and dug in but on 12 (32 balls) he was caught behind by Tom Turner off Matt Greenall, 130-6.

Andrew Holdsworth was next in and runs were hard to come by, Harry Barclay was next out bowled by Caleb Bradford for 9 (32 balls), 144-7. James Dunn came in at nine and had put on 21 runs when Andrew Holdsworth became Jake Durnell's third victim bowled for 30 (55 balls), 165-8.

Chorley lost their last two wickets on the same score 187 in 50 overs, James Dunn was caught by Luke Platt off Matthew De Villiers for 8 (10 balls), 187-9, followed by Ian Oakes bowled by Matt Greenall for 7 (10 balls) leaving Sam Steeple 6no (8 balls).

The Longridge bowling was Jake Durnell 3-32 from 15 overs, Caleb Bradford 3-57 off 15, Matt Greenall 2-55 from 8, Zach Proctor 1-25 off 7 and Matthew De Villiers 1-28 from 5.

Joshua Mullin and Tom Howarth opened for the visitors, Will Moulton struck early for the hosts Tom Howarth lbw for 1 (5 balls), 6-1, Matthew De Villers was in next and with Joshua Mullin were going along nicely, Sam Steeple broke the partnership bowling Joshua Mullin for 15 (38 balls), 51-2.

Zac Christie was the new batsman and struggled for runs, he was out caught behind by Harry Barclay off Joshua Pisorius for 14 (44 balls), 87-3. Matthew De Villiers was going well until he was caught behind by Harry Barclay off Joshua Pistorius for 80 (67 balls).

The Longridge innings became a battle for survival and they hung on to reach 140-9 in their 50 overs denying the hosts victory and the League title. Tom Turner and Matt Greenall were to two not out batsmen

The Chorley bowling was Edwin Moulton 3-26 from 13 overs, Sam Steeple 2-19 off 7, Joshua Pistorius 2-24 from 11, Will Moulton 1-21 off 3, Andrew Holdsworth 0-5 from1 and James Dunn 0-10 off 5

Garstang v Leyland

Garstang won the toss at the Riverside Sports ground and asked the visitors to bat first, Zak Willox and Karl Croos opened but were soon parted with Karl Cross bowled by Danny Gilbert for 2 (3 balls), 2-1.

In at three was Jacob Wright and with Willox were going well , Ian Walling broke the partnership bowling Zak Willox for 18 (28 balls), 38-2, Geeth Kumara was in next but with only four further runs on the board Jacob Wright was bowwled by Danny Gilbert for 16 (31 balls), 42-3.

Andrew Makinson joined Kumara and they slowly moved the score on, Waris Khan was introduced into the attack and he made the breakthrough Andrew Makinson caught behind by Matthew Crowther for 12 (28 balls), 70-4. James Critchley was the new man in but on 13 (20 balls) he was bowled by Ian Walling, 91-5.

Adam Sexton joined Geeth Kumara, Kumara had been holding one end up but now it was his turn, caught by Ryan Pearson off Michael Walling for 26 (61 balls), 97-6. Ian Walling made further inroads to the Leyland innings with two wickets, he bowled Adam Sexton for 12 (22 balls), 105-7 then Iain Critchley was caught behind by Matthew Crowther for 1 (16 balls), 106-8

James Rounding and Andrew Jacques took the score to 125 when Michael Walling brought the innings to an end, Andrew Jacques was out lbw for 2 (25 balls) followed next ball with Joe Shackleton out lbw for 0 as Leyland closed on 125 all out in 42.4 overs with James Rounding 15no (21 balls).

Ian Wallling lead the Garstang bowling with 4-49 from 15 overs, with Michael Walling 3-9 off 8.4, Danny Gilbert 2-40 from 13 and Waris Khan 1-22 off 6

Michael Walling and Luke Smith got the hosts off to a good start, disaster struck for the hosts with the loss of three wickets with the score on 46, Michael Walling was caught by James Rounding off Joe Shackleton for 20 (25 balls), 46-1, Geeth Kumara bowled Luke Smith for 24 (20 balls), 46-2, then two balls later Ashton Charles was caught behind by Adam Sexton off Kumara for 0, 46-3.

Matthew Crowther and Ryan Pearson were the new batsmen, Ryan Pearson took the lead but with 72 on the board Matthew Crowther was caught by Karl Cross off Geeth Kumara for 6 (14 balls), 72-4, Hugo Croft joined Pearson but was soon out caught and bowled by Kumara for 0 (12 balls). 80-5

Mark Walling was in next but lost his partner Ryan Pearson bowled by Andrew Jacques for 39 (53 balls), 98-6. Mark Walling had a new partner in Ian Walling who became Andrew Jacques second victim caught by James Critchley for 1 (7 balls), 108-7

Joe Barlow came to the wicket and there was further drama as he was run out by Geeth Kumara for 0 (10 balls), 112-8, the game could have gone either way but Mark Walling 25no (67 balls) and Danny Gilbert 6no (14 balls) saw the hosts home on 129-8 in 37 overs.

The Leyland bowling was Geeth Kumara 4-24 from 15 overs, Andrew Jacques 2-43 off 11, Joe Shackleton 1-20 from 3 and Iain Critchley 0-38 off 8

Kendal v Fulwood & Broughton

Fulwood & Broughton won the toss and chose to bat first, Matthew Smith and Jon Fenton opened but on 23 Matthew Smith was bowled by Toby Tyson for 11 (33 balls), The visitors number three was Ben Rosbottom, the introduction of Chris Miller into the attack saw success in his first over Ben Rosbottom lbw for 1 (10 balls), 33-2

Hareen Buddila was next in. Louis Backhouse removed the patient Jon Fenton caught by Max Winskill for 26 (56 balls), 47-3. the new man in was James McWilliam, Louis Backhouse struck once again with the wicket of Hareen Buddila caught behind by Finlay Richardson for 17 (24 balls), 59-4.

Muhammad Zaid replaced Hareen Buddila and was on 11 (37 balls) when he was stumped by Finlay Richardson off Freddie Fallows , 86-5, Lewis Wellings was the new man and fell to the Richarson/Fallows combination, caught behind by Finlay Richardson off Freddie Fallows for 5 (12 balls), 104-6

What followed next was a complete disaster for the visitors losing four wickets on the same score, first to go was James McWilliam bowled by Chris Miller for 34 (48 balls), 110-7, next James Lupton lbw to Chris Miller for 0 (4 balls), 110-8, Freddie Fallows bowled Ben Parkinson for 0 (16 balls), 110-9.

Chris Miller claimed his fourth wicket Dom Jackson caught by Toby Tyson for 0 (1 ball) as Fulwood & Broughton were bowled out for 110 in 40.3 overs with Chris Brookes 0no (1 ball).

The Kendal bowling was Chris Miller 4-27 from 7.3 overs, Freddie Fallows 3-9 off 9, Louis Backhouse 2-16 from 6, Toby Tyson 1-27 off 8 and Kuldeep Singh 0-27 from 10

Freddie Fallows and Oliver Tyson were batsmen in a hurry, Hareen Buddila bowled Freddie Fallows for 16 (15 balls), 25-1, Oliver Tyson was out caught behind by James McWilliam off Lewis Welligs for 36 (36 balls), 63-2. That was the last success for the visitors as Max Winskill 35no (54 balls) and Rongsen Jonathan 17no (26 balls) saw Kendal to victory on 111 in 21.5 overs.

For Fulwood & Broughton Lewis Wellings took 1-23 from 5 overs, Hareen Buddila 1-32 off 6.5, James Lupton 0-13 from 4 and Jon Fenton 0-37 off 6.

The win took Kendal to the top of the League and with Chorley not winning against Longridge meant that Kendal were Northern Premier League Champions for 2023

Penrith v Fleetwood

Fleetwood won the toss at Tynefield Park and elected to bat first, Andy Drake and Jeremy Davies opened and gave them a great start broken by James Bowman bowling Jeremy Davies for 38 (65 balls), 84-1. Charlie Clark was the visitors number three and with Drake took the score past the hundred, but on reaching 13 (28 balls) he was caught by Owen Jones off James Bowman, 110-2

Adam Sharrocks was in next and their partnership was 21 when he was caught and bowled by Harsha Vithana for 11 (30 balls), 131-3. The new man in was Harry McAleer who became Harsha Vithana's next victim lbw for 3 (10 balls), 145-4.

Declan Clerkin was in next but lost his partner Andy Drake bowled by Jamie O'Brien for 59 (105 balls), 147-5. Nathan Bend joined Clerkin and they went on the attack, their partnership was 87 broken when Declan Clerkin was caught and bowled by Finlay Hansford for 58 (38 balls), 234-6.

There were only three overs left and the visitors went for the runs but lost wickets in the process, Will Reader replaced Clerkin, he was stumped by Sulosan Thiru off James Bowman for 1 (3 balls), Nathan Bend was next out bowled by Finlay Hansford for 31 (24 balls), 241-8.

We were in the last over, Will Haddow was run out by Jamie O'Brien for 3 (4 balls), 242-9, Jack Wilkinson 9no (3 balls) and Rizwan Patel 3no (4 balls) saw Fleetwood close on 254-9 in their 50 overs.

The Penrith bowling was James Bowman 3-73 from 11 overs, Harsha Vithana 2-43 off 15, Finlay Hansford 2-45 from 10, Jamies O'Brien 1-49 off 8 and Finn Harrison 0-27 from 6

Owen Jones and Sulosan Thiru opened for the hosts and gave them a good start, Owen Jones was first out bowled by Declan Clerkin for 23 (41 balls), 40-1, number three was Harsha Vithana who fell caught by Declan Clerkin off Rizwan Patel for 12 (18 balls), 57-2

Next in was Jamie O'Brien, he became Rizwan Patel's second wicket caught by Declan Clerkin for 6 (9 balls), 71-3. The outlook for the hosts did not look good with the loss of two wickets on the same score, opener Sulosan Thiru was caught by Declan Clerkin off Jack Wilkinson for 30 (68 balls), 83-4. Jamie O'Brienn's replacement James Bowman was caught by Adam Sharrocks off Declan Clerkin for 4 (10 balls), 83-5.

Ben Littleton joined Alister Craig but with the score on 92 history repeated itself with the loss of two wickets, Ben Littleton was caught and bowled by Jack Wilkinson for 8 (6 balls), 92-6, two balls later he trapped Ollie Greenwood lbw for 0 (2 balls), 92-7

Finn Harrison was Alister Craig's new partner but did not last long lbw to Declan Clerkin for 0 (9 balls), 105-8. Finlay Hansford was in next and with Alister Craig made a fight of it only for Declan Clerkin to break the partnership having Alister Craig caught Adam Sharrocks for 44 (38 balls), 147-9.

Andrei Carp and Finlay Hansford continued to fight but it all came to an end with Finlay Hansford stumped by Harry McAleer off Jack Wilkinson for 23 (23 balls) as Penrith were bowled out for 165 in 39.2overs with Andrei Carp 1no (14 balls).

Jack Wilkinson 4-30 from 6.2 overs and Declan Clerkin 4-40 off 14 lead the way supported by Rizwan Patel 2-23 from 7, Will Reader 0-15 off 5, Jeremy Davies 0-23 from 5 and Will Haddow 0-28 off 2

St Annnes v Netherfield

Netherfield won the toss at Vernon Road and chose to bat first, Josh Dixon and Reece Irving were the opening pair and had a opening stand of 101 when they were both out, Reece Irving went first caught behind by James Bradley off Mitch Bolus for 41 (69 balls), 101-1, followed by Josh Dixon lbw to Lukman Vahaluwala for 50 (74 balls), 101-2

The two new batsmem were Aryan Varsani and Ben Barrow, Varsani was soon out lbw to Lukman Vahaluwala for 3 (8 balls), 120-3. John Huck joined Ben Barrow and they took over with a stand of 101 broken by Mitch Bolus bowling Ben Barrow for 58 (68 balls), 221-4.

Theo Gallagher was the new batsman with only a few overs to go, John Huck fell caught by Harry Birkman off Mitch Bolus for 52 (60 balls) 240-5, Will Beeden 10no (10 balls) joined Theo Gallagher 26no (16 balls) saw the vistors close on 283-5 in their 50 overs.

For St Annes Mitch Bolus took 3-83 from 15 overs, Lukman Vahaluwala 2-49 off 13, Harry Birkman 0-10 from 5, Alec McGloughlin 0-32 off 6, Nathan Bolus 0-32 from 4 and Tom Higson 0-40 off 7

Luke Jardine and Lukman Vahaluwala opened for the hosts, Luke Jardine was the first out caught by Isaac Medhurst off Samuel Medhurst for 10 (18 balls), 29-1, In at three was Nathan Bolus and with Vahaluwala were going steadily along until Oli Wileman had Nathan Bolus caught behind by Will Beeden for 5 (21 balls), 68-2

Tom Higson was Vahaluwala's new partner and they went on the attack until their partnership of 72 was broken by Reece Irving having Lukman Vahaluwala caught by Matt Jackson for 76 (75 balls), 140-2. Nathan Armstrong was the new batsman and carried on keeping the scoreboard ticking over until he retired hurt on 20no (27 balls).

Alec McGloughlin replaced Armstrong but was out first ball bowled by Theo Gallagher for 0, 178-4, next ball Gallagher trapped Harry Birkman lbw for 0, 178-5.

Mitch Bolus came in next and with the total just passed the two hundred there was disaster for the home side with the loss of two wickets on the same score, Tom Higson's innings came to an end caught by John Huck off Theo Gallagher 82 (64 balls), 205-6, two balls later Ryan Birkman was caught by Reece Irving off Theo Gallagher for 0 (2 balls), 205-7

Kevin Reid came in at number ten but soon lost his partner Mitch Bolus bowled by Matt Jackson for 8 (10 balls) 213-8 in 36.4 overs giving victory to Netherfield as James Bradley was injured and unable to bat along with Nathan Armstrong. Kevin Reid was 4no (3 balls).

Theo Gallagher did the damage for the visitors with 4-31 from 6 overs, with Matt Jackson 1-21 off 5.4, Oli Wileman 1-41 from 7, Reece Irving 1-41 off 5, Samuel Medhurst 1-58 from 9 and Isaac Medhurst 0-15 off 4.
