The Northern Cricket League Review

Round 17 of the Northern Premier League saw the top four sides Chorley, Garstang, Kendal and Longridge win. Fleetwood were also winners with Netherfield having a winning draw against Leyland.

The postponed game between Penrith and Netherfield was played on Sunday with Penrith coming out on top giving them a slim chance of avoiding relegation.

Chorley v Blackpool

Chorley won the toss at Windsor Park and asked the visitors to bat first, Tomas King and Kasim Munir opened, Tomas King was the first to go caught by Roshen Silva off Will Moulton for16 (15 balls), 19-1.

Shivam Chaudhary came in at three but quickly lost Kasim Munir caught behind by Harry Barclay off Edwin Moulton for 1 (7 balls), 19-2. Josh Boyne was next in and soon became Will Moulton's second victim lbw for 5 (17 balls), 26-3.

The new man in was Dylan Henshall but did not last long bowled by Will Moulton for 2 (17 balls) bringing Jake Muncaster to the wicket, 34-4. Things went for bad to worse for the visitors with the loss of Shivam Chaudhary caught by Edwin Moulton off Will Moulton for 18 (37 balls). 45-5.

Blackpool were in trouble and things did not improve with new batsman Ben Howarth run out by Sam Steeple for 7 (17 balls), 57-6. Matthew Grindley joined Jake Muncaster and they battled to rebuild the innings, Joshua Pistorius made the breakthrough with two wickets in three balls, firstly Matthew Grindley was caught and bowled for 10 (42 balls), 88-7, two balls later Izatullah Stankzai was caught by James Dunn for 0 (2 balls), 88-8

William Vause was Muncaster's next partner but with only eight runs added Muncaster fell bowled by Sam Steeple for 36 (76 balls), 96-9, Paul Danson came in at eleven, Sam Steeple closed the innings on 116 allout in 47.1 overs by bowling Paul Danson for 9 (23 balls), William Vause was 11no (30 balls).

The Chorley bowling was Will Moulton 4-28 from 15 overs with Joshua Pistorius 2-6 off 4, Sam Steeple 2-14 from 8.1, Edwin Moulton 1-40 off 11, Ian Oakes 0-13 from 4 and James Dunn 0-14 off 5.

Will Moulton and Alfie Dobson opened for the hosts, Their partnership was broken by Matthew Grindley bowling Will Moulton for 15 (23 balls), 26-1, the Chorley number three was Roshen Silva who only survived two balls bowled by Jake Muncaster for 0 (2 balls), 27-2.

Joshua Pistorius joined Alfie Dobson and they took contol of the match but with only four runs required for victory Alfie Dobson was caught by Kasim Munir off Dylan Henshall for 49 (86 balls), 113-3. Harry Barclay 0no (1 ball) was the new batsman and saw Joshua Pistorius 45no (61 balls) hit the winnings runs as Chorley closed on 117-3 in 28.3 overs.

For Blackpool Dylan Henshall took 1-4 from 2 overs, Jake Muncaster 1-11 off 5, Matthew Grindley 1-35 from 10, Shivam Chaudhary 0-12 off 2, Izatyllah Stankzai 0-20 from 4.3 and William Vause 0-30 off 5

Eccleston (Chorley) v Longridge

Eccleston (Chorley) won the toss at Doctors Lane in a reduced over game to 94 overs and invited the vistors to bat first, Joshua Mullin and Tom Howarth opened but with the score on 19 Joshua Mullin was bowled by Reece Thomas for 8 (21 balls), 19-1.

Matthew De Villiers came in at three but was quickly out caught by Nick Fowler off Reece Thomas for 4 (8 balls), 27-2, the new batsman was Zac Christie and with Tom Howarth slowly moved the score along until Michael Atkinson trapped Tom Howarth lbw for 19 (36 balls), 56-3.

Luke Platt was next in but with only nine runs added Michael Atkinson claimed his second wicket Zac CHristie caught by Reece Thomas for 18 (51 balls), 64-5. Zach Proctor joined Luke Platt and they began to dominate the host's bowling, it was Michael Atkinson who broke the partnership having Zach Proctor lbw for 41 (67 balls), 149-5.

Tom Turner was the new batsman but soon lost his partner Luke Platt caught by Reece Thomas off Michael Atkinson for 50 (84 balls), 157-6, in their last over the visitors lost Jonathan Millward run out by Nick Fowler for 0 (5 balls), 164-7 and off the last ball Matt Greenall was run out by Alex Brooks without facing for 0 as Longridge closed on 168-8 in their 47 overs

Michael Atkinson was Eccleston (Chorley)'s best bowler with 4-33 from 9 overs, Reec Thomas 2-39 off 14, Cameron Smith 0-14 from 3, Thomas Foster 0-27 off 8 and Nick Fowler 0-48 from 13

In reply the hosts innings never got off the ground losing four wickets with only 16 runs on the board, Jonathan Millward taking three, Eccleston (Chorley) were bowled out for 64 in 23.2 overs with only three batsmen reaching double figures, Reece Thomas 16 (16 balls), Iain Bradley 14no (18 balls) and Michael Ashcroft 13 (44 balls).

Three Longridge bowlers claimed three wickets, Jonathan Millward 3-8 from 6.3 overs, Jake Durnell 3-20 off 6.3 and Caleb Bradford 3-25 from 5. The hosts only had ten batsmen.

Fulwood & Broughton v Fleetwood

Fulwood & Broughton won the toss at the Highfield ground and put the visitors into bat, Jeremy Davies and Declan Clerkin opened the batting and were doing well, Khalil Patel broke the partnership bowling Jeremy Davies for 4 (16 balls), 36-1.

Andy Drake was the Fleetwood number three but soon lost his partner Declan Clerkin bowled by Jon Fenton for 31 (20 balls), 38-2. Atiq Uz Zaman was next in and with Drake were keeping the scoreboard ticking over. The introduction of Hareen Buddila into the attack had immediate results, Andy Drake caught by Dilan Patel off Buddila's first ball for 10 (26 balls), 61-3

Harry McAleer came to the wicket but seven runs later Atiq Uz Zaman became Buddila's next victim caught by Ben Rosbottom for 19 (22 balls), 68-4. Hareen Buddila claimed his next wicket the new batsman Charlie Clark lbw for 6 (9 balls), 76-5

Adam Sharrocks joined McAleer and they steadied the ship until Hareen Buddila claimed both their wickets, Harry McAleer was first caught by James Lupton for 19 (51 balls), 111-6, followed by Adam Sharrocks wicket number five caught by Muhammad Zaid for 19 (39 balls), 115-7.

Ed Nuttall and Joseph Warwick were the new batsmen, Khalil Patel struck having Joseph Warwick caught by Hareen Buddila for 1 (3 balls), 115-8. The next in was Will Reader, Hareen Buddila cleaned up the visitors tail, victim number six bowling Ed Nuttall for 6 (14 balls), 123-9. He finished off the innings on 139 all out in 37.3 overs having Rizwan Patel lbw for 10 (15 balls). Will Reader was 10no (11 balls).

Hareen Buddila's excellent figures were 7-23 from 12.3 overs, Khalil Patel 2-37 off 9, Jon Fenton 1-53 from 10 and James Lupton 0-24 off 6.

Matthew Smith and James McWilliam opened, Jeremy Davies gave the visitors the breakthrough with two quick wickets, James McWilliam was bowled by Davies for 0 (2 balls), 14-1. with the last ball of the over he had Ben Parkinson caught behind by Harry McAleer for 0 (4 balls), 14-2

Hareen Buddila was Smith's new partner and they were going along quite nicely until Declan Clerkin broke the partnership bowling Matthew Smith for 51 (41 balls), 61-3, Clerkin then acoounted for new man Ben Rosbottom bowling him for 1 (14 balls), 71-4.

The introduction of Rizwan Patel into the attack swung the game towards a visitors victory claiming the prize wicket of Hareen Buddila with his third ball bowling him for 16 (45 balls), 71-5, two runs later he bowled new batsman Anupam Tripathi for 1 (13 balls), 73-6

Muhammad Zaid was Patel's next wicket caught by Ed Nuttall for 2 (17 balls), 74-7. Dilan Patel and Jon Fenton dug in and tried to turn the game around but once again Rizwan Patel broke the partnership having Jon Fenton caught by Declan Clerkin for 14 (15 balls), 90-8.

Khalil Patel was the host number ten but was run out for 0 (6 balls) by Charlie Clark. 98-9. Dilan Patel 8 (34 balls) was caught by Adam Sharrocks off Rizwan Patel to give him his fifth wicket closing the Fulwood & Broughton innings on 104 all out in 32 overs. James Lupton was 5no (6 balls).

The Fleetwood bowling was Rizwan Patel 5-15 from 8 overs, Jeremy Davies 2-22 off 8, Declan Clerkin 2-26 from 9 and Ed Nuttall 0-40 off 7

Garstang v St Annes

Garstang won the toss at the Riverside Sports ground and asked the visitors to bat first, Yohan De Silva and Luke Jardine opened but with the total on 14 both were out, Luke Jardine was the first to go caught by Joseph Pearson off Waris Khan for 1 (14 balls), 14-1. Yohan De Silva followed bowled by Ian Walling for 9 (12 balls), 14-2

The two new batsmen were Lukman Vahaluwala and Tom Higson, Waris Khan was the one to break the partnership bowling Lukman Vahaluwala for 5 (20 balls), 32-3, Nathan Armstrong joined Tom Higson and they took the score to 52 when disaster struck for the visitors losing three wickets without addition.

Tom Higson was caught by Tom Wells off Ian Walling for 24 (28 balls), 52-4, next ball Walling had Alec McGloughlin lbw for 0 (1 ball), 52-5, James Bradley replaced McGloughlin but soon became Ian Wallings fourth victim bowled for 0 (8 balls), 52-6

Rory Birkman was Nathan Armstrong's next partner and were making progress until Ryan Birkman was caught by Ryan Pearson off Joel Anthony Derham for 9 (15 balls), 79-7. Will Trohear was the new batsman falling to Danny Gilbert bowled for 0 (6 balls), 86-8

Rory Urquhart came in at ten and was soon out caught by Mark Walling off Joel Anthony Derham for 4 (12 balls), 99-9. The St Annes innings closed on 101 all out in 29.3 overs with Joel Anthony Derham trapping Keith Reid lbw for 0 (4 balls), Nathan Armstrong was unbeaten on 36 (57 balls).

The wickets were shared amongst the Garstang bowlers, Ian Walling 4-38 from 11 overs, Joel Anthony Derham 3-11 off 4.3, Waris Khan 2-12 from 6 and Danny Gilbert 1-27 off 8

The Garstang reply got off to a bad start losing both openers quickly, Alec McGloughlin bowled Luke Smith for 1 (8 balls), 1-1. Joseph Pearson followed soon after caught behind by James Bradley off Lukman Vahaluwala for 2 (11 balls), 5-2

Matthew Crowther and Mark Walling settled things down and slowly began to build a score until Tom Higson gave the viitors a glimmer of hope with two wickets, Matthew Crowther was the first to go caught by Rory Urquhart off Higson for 33 (72 balls), 83-3, two balls later he had Ryan Pearson caught by Yohan De Silva for 0 (2 balls), 85-4

That was the last success for the visitors as Mark Walling 53no (95 balls) and Hugo Croft 11no (16 balls) saw the hosts over the line on 104-4 in 33.4 overs and continue their fight to retain their title

For St Annes Tom Higson took 2-29 from 8.4 overs, Lukman Vahauwala 1-13 off 9, Alec McGloughlin 1-25 from 7, Rory Urquhart 0-16 off 6 and Keith Reid 0-19 from 3.

Netherfield v Leyland

Leyland won the toss in a reduced 70 over match at Parkside Road and put the hosts into bat, Josh Dixon and Theo Gallagher opened and got then off to a brilliant start, Joe Shackleton broke the partnership bowling Theo Gallagher for 38 (47 balls), 75-1.

Aryan Varsani came in at three but was quickly out caught by Zak Willox off Iain Critchley for 1 (3 balls), 76-2. Ben Barrow was next in and with Dixon took the score to the dreaded nelson were Josh Dixon was stumped by Adam Sexton off Iain Critchley for 35 (65 balls), 111-3

John Huck replaced Dixon and with Ben Barrow moved the score along until Ben Barrow fell caught by James Critchley off Andrew Jacques for 77 (62 balls), 184-4, Isaac Medhurst was the new batsman, John Huck was out on the last ball of the innings caught behind by Adam Sexton off Kurtis Watson for 26 (33 balls) as Netherfield closed on 198-5 in their 35 overs, Isaac Medhurst was 6no (7 balls).

The wickets were shared amongst the Leyland bowlers, Iain Critchley took 2-65 ftom 10 overs, Andrew Jacques 1-34 off 9, Joe Shackleton 1-34 from 7 and Kurtis Watson 1-58 off 9.

The Leyland reply got off to a bad start losing fourth wickets early on, Jacob Wright and James Rounding opened but lost Rounding caugth behind by Ben Barrow off Samuel Medhurst for 10 (10 balls), 17-1, Zak Willox was number three but lost his partner Jacob Wright bowled by Samuel Medhurst for 7 (20 balls), 18-2.

Matt Jackson trapped Zak Willox lbw for 1 (12 balls), 22-3. Andrew Makinson replaced Willox and fell to Matt Jackson caught by Aryan Varsani for 0 (11 balls), 25-4. Karl Cross and Kurtis Watson were the new batsmen and they dug in and tried to retrieve the situation,.

Isaac Medhurst broke the partnership having Karl Cross caught by Theo Gallagher for 39 (86 balls), 68-5. James Critchley 10no (19 balls) was the new batsman and with Kurtis Watson 10no (52 balls) saw Leyland close on 80-5 in their 37 overs.

The Netherfield bowling was Samuel Medhurst 2-14 from 7 overs, Matt Jackson 2-15 off 8, Isaac Medhurst 1-6 from 2, Reece Irving 0-9 off 2, Oli Wileman 0-16 from 5 and Sagar Udeshi 0-18 off 11

Penrith v Kendal

Kendal won the toss at Tynefield Park and invited thr hosts to bat first, Owen Jones and Sulosan Thiru opened but lost Owen Jones second ball off the match bowled by Kuldeep Singh for 0 (2 balls), 0-1.

Harsha Vithana was the Penrith number three. Sulosan Thiru struggled and was out caught by Rongsen Jonathan off Louis Backhouse for 1 (23 balls), 21-2. The incoming batsman was James Bowman who soon became Louis Backhouse's second victim caught by Lewis Richardson for 3 (10 balls), 35-3.

Greg Cameron was next in and with Vithana had doubled the score when Harsha Vithana was caught behind by Finlay Richardson off Freddie Fallows for 38 (53 balls), 73-4, Ben Littleton was the new batsman but was soon out caught by Lewis Richardson off Chris Miller for 3 (12 balls), 80-5

Alister Craig joined Greg Cameron and they took the total past the hundred, Freddie Fallows broke the partnership bowling Alister Craig for 6 (30 balls), 109-6, Ollie Greenwood came to the wicket but on 8 (16 balls) he was caught and bowled by Freddie Fallows, 125-7.

Disaster struck for the home side with the loss of Greg Cameron caught by Oliver Tyson off Rongsen Jonathan for 56 (76 balls), 125-8. James Ellis and Samuel Hall took on the fight, their partnership was 19 when James Ellis was bowled by Louis Backhouse for 11 (9 balls), 144-9. Freddie Fallows closed the Penrith innings on 149 all out in 45 overs trapping Finlay Hansford lbw for 0 (15 balls), Samuel Hall was 13no (24 balls).

For Kendal Freddie Fallows took 4-29 form 14 overs, Louis Backhouse 2-23 off 6, Kuldeep Singh 1-21 from 6, Rongsen Jonathan 1-22 off 6, Chris Miller 1-32 from 7 and Toby Tyson 0-13 off 6

Oliver Tyson and Freddie Fallows opened for the visitors and took the score to 36 when Oliver Tyson was bowled by James Ellis for 20 (30 balls), 36-1, Max Winskill was in at three and with Freddie Fallows leading the way were going well until the introduction of Samuel Hall into the attack, with his first ball he had Max Winskill caught by James Ellis for 10 (33 balls), 100-2

Rongsen Jonathan was the new batsman but he soon lost his partner Freddie Fallows caught by Owen Jones off Samuel Hall for 66 (50 balls), 109-3. Bradley Earl joined Jonathan and they were in sight of victory when Samuel Hall had Rongsen Jonathan caught by Owen Jones for 28 (29 balls), 142-4

The incoming batsman Finlay Richardson 2no (2 balls) and Bradley Earl 15no (27 balls) saw the visitors to victory on 150-4 in 28.3 overs

The Penrith bowling was Samuel Hall took 3-30 from 5.3 overs, James Ellis 1-27 off 5, Greg Cameron 0-7 from 2, Finlay Hansford 0-14 off 3, James Bowman 0-21 from 3 and Harsha Vithana 0-44 off 10


Sunday 13th August

Penrith v Netherfield

This match was played after the fixture was postponed due to the terrible accident to Ben Ellis, In a match Penrith must win to keep alive their hopes of remainging in the League the toss was won by Netherfield anf they invted the hosts to bat first.

Ollie Greenwood and Owen Jones opened and were going along nicely but with the score on 32 both were out, owen Jones was the first to go caught by Oli Wileman off Reece Irving for 12 (31 balls), 32-1, Ollie Greenwood followed bowled by Sagar Udeshi for 14 (48 balls), 32-2

The two new batsmen were Harsha Vithana and James Bowman, unfortunately for the hosts James Bowman was caught by Aryan Varsani off Harry Lee for 0 (13 balls), 35-3. the incoming batsman Alister Craig hit two four but was then caught behind by Ben Barrow off Harry Lee for 10 (7 balls), 45-4

Next in was Ben Littleton who soon became wicket number three for Harry Lee caught by Aryan Varsani 6 (4 balls), 51-5. Nicky Burns was the new man in and with Vithana looked to be turning the game around until Harsha Vithana was caught by John Huck off Theo Gallagher for 14 (49 balls), 72-6

Theo Gallagher then had Nicky Burns lbw for 11 (42 balls), 75-7. Dan Morland and James Ellis were given the task of keeping the scoreboard ticking over but Dan Morland fell caught by Oli Wileman off Sagar Udeshi for 0 (8 balls), 75-8.

Dylan Simpson joined James Ellis and with Ellis leading the way took the total to 94 when Dylan Simpson was bowled by Samuel Medhurst for 0 (5 balls), 94-9. Samuel Medhurst closed the Penrith innings on 95 all out in 38.1 overs by bowling James Ellis for 16 (17 balls), Ben Crouch was 0no (8 balls).

Harry Lee took 3-29 from 7 overs, Samuel Medhurst 2-9 off 6.1, Theo Gallagher 2-9 from 4, Sagar Udeshi 2-18 off 13, Oli Wileman 0-5 from 1 and Isaac Medhurst 0-13 off 5

Josh Dixon and Theo Gallagher opened but there was success for the hosts Theo Gallagher was caught by Harsha Vithana off Dylan Simpson for 0 (3 balls), 0-1, number three was Aryan Varsani but on reaching 14 (13 balls) he was bowled by James Ellis, 15-2.

Next in was Ben Barrow but with only four runs added Dylan Simpson trapped Josh Dixon lbw for 5 (18 balls), 19-3, John Huck was Barrow's new partner and they looked th be steering the visitors towards victory, The introduction of Ben Crouch into the attack saw in his second over John Huck out caught by Owen Jones for 13 (38 balls), 44-4, new batsman Reece Irving was then bowled by Crouch for 0 (6 balls), 44-5.

Isaac Medhurst joined Barrow but once again the visitors lost two wickets on the same score, Ben Crouch claimed both wickets firstly Ben Barrow lbw for 19 (44 balls), 64-6, it became 64-7 with Sagar Udeshi bowled first ball by Ben Crouch for 0, 64-8

Oli Wilman came to the wicket and with eleven runs added for the third time in the innings two wickets fell on the same score and once again it was Ben Crouch doing the damage, he had Isaac Medhurst caught by Dylan Simpson for 15 (23 balls), 75-8. next ball he had Harry Lee lbw for 0 75-9

Samuel Medhurst and Oli Wileman dug in to try and win the game for the visitors but Ben Crouch had the final say bowling Samuel Medhurst for 2 (21 balls) as Netherfield were bowled out for 89 in 31.3 overs with Oli Wileman 13 no (31 balls),

This win gives Penrith a chance of staying in the league even though they it may be slim.

Ben Crouch had figures of 7-25 from 9.5 overs supported by Dylan Simpson 2-28 off 6, James Ellis 1-12 from 7 and Harsha Vithana 0-20 off 9
