The Northern Premier League 2023 season begins. Fleetwood return after one season in the Palace Shield Premier League and we welcome Ecclston (Chorley) to our league.
The inclement weather over night meant a reduced over game was played in some of the matches.
Champions Garstang were defeated by Netherfield, There were also wins for Chorley, Kendal and Leyland.
Blackpool had a winning draw against Fleetwood, The Eccleston (Chorely) game at Penrith was abandoned without a ball being bowled
DIVISION ONE:
Blackpool v Fleetwood
Blackpool entertained Fleetwood at Stanley Park on their return to the league in a match reduced to 68 overs. Fleetwood won the toss and invited the hosts to bat first
Tomas King and Luis Reece opened but with the score on 12 Tomas King was bowled by Jeremy Davies for 5 (11 balls), 12-1, Josh Boyne was in at three, the partnership was 41 when Boyne was run out by Rizwan Patel for 14 (34 balls) 53-2
Stuart Ashford was in next but was out first ball caught by Atiq-Uz Zaman off Declan Clerkin for 0, 53-3, Dylan Henshall replaced Ashford but was quickley out caught by Nathan Bend off Declan Clerkin for 0 (5 balls) 59-4
Jake Muncaster joined Luis Reece and they took the score to 136 when Luis Reece was caught by Jeremy Davies off Declan Clerkin for 80 (81 balls), 136-5, Ben Howarth came to the wicket and with the total on 156 Declan Clerkin claimed his fourth wicket bowling Jake Muncaster for 25 (58 balls), 156-6
Ben Howarth was the next wicket to fall bowled by Tiaan Van Vuuren for 5 (8 balls) 162-7, The Blackpool innings came to a close on 163-7 in their 34 overs with William Vause 3no (6 balls) and Matthew Grindley 1no (2 balls).
Declan Clerkin lead the way for Fleetwood taking 4-30 from 9 overs supported by Jeremy Davies 1-15 off 5, Tiaan Van Vuuren 1-54 from 11 and Rizwan Patel 0-36 off 9
Andy Drake and Harry McAleer opened for the visitors but with the score on 23 Matthew Grindley struck taking two wickets in one over, first ball he trapped Harry McAleer lbw for 9 (15 balls, 23-1), with his last ball of the over he bowled new batsman Declan Clerkin for 0 ( 5 balls) 23-2
Tiaan Van Vuuren came in next but fell caught behind by Ben Howarth off William Vause for 0 (2 balls) 24-3, Atiq UZ Zaman joined Andy Drake and they doubled the score but the return of Matthew Grindley to the attack resulted in Atiq Uz Zaman being bowled for 13 (40 balls) 48-4
Matthew Grindley struck once again taking two wickets in two balls, firstly Charlie Clark caught by Jamie Thomson for 0 (7 balls) 57-5, next ball he bowled Nathan Bend for 0 (1 ball) 57-6
There were 14 overs remaining and Fleetwood staring defeat in the face, Jeremy Davies was Andy Drake's next partner and they fought to save the game, Josh Boyne broke the partnership with 6 overs remaining bowling Jeremy Davies for 14 (33 balls) 86-7
Adam Sharrocks was next in, Andy Drake then took over and faced most of the remaining balls to see Fleetwood close on 108-7 in their 34 overs with Andy Drake batting through for 52no (96 balls) with Adam Sharrocks 3no (10 balls)
Matthew Grindley had figures of 5-15 from 11 overs, Josh Boyne 1-10 off 4, William Vause 1-25 from 6, Jamie Thomson 0-9 off 2 and Luis Reece 0-39 from 11
Chorley v Fulwood & Broughton
Chorley won the toss at Windsor Park and put the visitors into bat, Jon Fenton and Matthew Smith opened but were soon parted. Jon Fenton was bowled by Will Moulton for 8 (11 balls) 9-1
Simon Kerrigan came in at three but lost Matthew Smith caught by Andrew Holdsworth off Edwin Moulton for 2 (16 balls) 15-2,
Hareen Buddila was next in but disaster struck for the visitors with the loss of two wickets on the same score. Simon Kerrigan went first lbw to Edwin Moulton for 10 (31 balls) 28-3, Harreen Buddila followed caught by Joshua Pistorius off Will Moulton for 8 (16 balls) 25-4
Ben Parkinson and Richard Turner were the new batsmen and set about rebuilding the innings, They had moved to score to fifty when Ben Parkinson was caught behind by Harry Barclay off James Dunn for 7 (39 balls), 50-5
James McWilliam joined Turner but was next out bowled by Matt Dawson for 3 (18 balls), 59-6, Matt Dawson then accounted for Richard Turner bowling him for 17 (58 balls) 60-7
Mark Smith and Dom Jackson were set the task of trying to rescue the situation but were thwarted with Dom Jackson being run out for 3 (4 balls) 64-8, James Lupton replaced Jackson but soon lost his partner Mark Smith stumped by Harry Barclay off Ian Oakes for 7 (22 balls) 73-9
Edwin Moulton brought the innings to an end having James Lupton caught by Alexander Howarth for 9 (18 balls) the visitors 80 all out in 39 overs with Chris Brookes 0no (4 balls)
The wickets were shared amongst the five Chorley bowlers, Edwin Moulton had 3-22 from 10 overs, Will Moulton 2-16 off 10, Matt Dawson 2-18 from 9, James Dunn 1-10 off 5 and Ian Oakes 1-12 from 5
Will Moulton and Alfie Dobson opened for the hosts but lost Will Moulton bowled by Jon Fenton in the first over for 0 (6 balls) 0-1. Roshen Silva came to the wicket but lost his partner Alfie Dobson bowled by Chris Brookes for 4 (21 balls) 8-2
Joshua Pistorius replaced Dobson and with Silva moved the score on, with their partnership on 18 Simon Kerrigan bowled Joshua Pistorius for 14 (20 balls) 26-3, Harry Barclay joined Silva, they were accumulating steadily until Hareen Buddila had Harry Barclay caught by Matthew Smith for 6 (33 balls), 49-4
Alexander Howarth was the new batsman but soon became Hareen Buddila's second victim caught by Jon Fenton for 5 (19 balls) 59-5, Edwin Moulton was Silva's next partner but with victory in sight Roshen Silva was run out for 36 (96 balls) 75-6
Andrew Holdsworth 8no (3 balls) came in and with Edwin Moulton 6no (25 balls) saw the hosts home on 83-6 in 36.4 overs
For Fulwood & Broughton Hareen Buddila took 2-22 from 9 overs, Chris Brookes 1-10 off 5, Simon Kerrigan 1-20 from 11, Jon Fenton 1-20 off 10 and James Lupton 0-10 from 1.4
Garstang v Netherfield
Champions Garstang opened their season at the Riverside Sports ground against Netherfield. Netherfield won the toss and asked the hosts to bat first in a 58 over match.
Ashton Charles and Michael Walling opened for the hosts, Charles was first out lbw to Isaac Medhurst for 2 (6 balls), 9-1, Mark Walling came in at three but lost his partner Michael Walling caught behind by Ben Barrow off Isaac Medhurst for 4 (22 balls) 19-2
The incoming batsman was Ryan Pearson and the partnership was blossoming when Ryan Pearson was bowled by Oli Wileman for 23 (46 balls), 70-3. Matthew Crowther joined Mark Walling but with only fourteen runs added Mark Walling was bowled by Sagar Udeshi for 33 (71 balls) 84-4
Tom Wells came in with 2.3 overs to go, in the 28th over of 29 Louis Backhouse struck taking three wickets in four balls, firstly Matthew Crowther was bowled for 10 (19 balls) 91-5, next ball he ran out Hugo Croft for 0 (1 ball), 91-6, two balls later he bowled Danny Gilbert 91-7
The hosts lost a wicket on the last ball of their innings Tom Wells run out by Josh Dixon for 8 (9 balls), Garstang closed their innings on 96-8 with Ian Walling 2no (3 balls)
For Netherfield Isaac Medhurst took 2-8 from 7 overs, Louis Backhurst 2-13 off 5, Oli Wileman 1-23 from 5, Sagar Udeshi 1-29 off 9 and Matt Jackson 0-14 from 3
The visitors got off to a bad start losing Ben Barrow in the first over caught by Mark Walling off Ian Walling for 2 (2 balls), 2-1. Reece Irving joined Josh Dixon and they were going along steadily until Josh Woodhead bowled Josh Dixon for 20 (53 balls) 48-2.
Aryan Varsani replaced Dixon, Ian Walling gave the hosts a glimmer of hope when he bowled Reece Irving for 24 (54 balls) 73-3, Steven Fisher came in next but lost Aryan Varsani caught and bowled by Danny Gilbert for 27 (27 balls) 81-4.
Sagar Udeshi 3no (5 balls) joined Steven Fisher 11no (18 balls) and they saw the visitors home on 97-4 in 26.1 overs
Ian Walling took 2-24 from 9 overs, Josh Woodhead 1-11 off 5.1, Danny Gilbert 1-33 from 8, Joel Anthony Derham 0-10 off 2 and Michael Walling 0-12 from 2
Kendal v Longridge
Kendal won the toss at Shap Road and invited the visitors to bat first in a 64 over match, James Whitehead and Joshua Mullin opened but were soon parted with Kuldeep Singh bowling James Whitehead for 3 (17 balls) 3-1
Zac Christie was in at three but was out bowled by Toby Tyson for 4 (8 balls) 8-2, Matthew De Villiers came in but suffered the same fate as Christie bowled by Toby Tyson for 6 (8 balls) 16-3
Things did not improve for the visitors as next man in Zach Proctor had made only two (13 balls) when he was caught by Kuldeep Singh off Freddie Fallows, 19-4,
Luke Platt replaced Proctor but once again was soon out caught by Matthew Park off Chris Miller for 3 (6 balls) 22-5, Things went form bad to worse with new batsman Tom Howarth run out by Bradley Earl for 0 (13 balls) 24-6.
Joshua Mullin was watching the collapse from the other end but now it was his turn trapped lbw by Chris Miller for 6 (38 balls) 25-7.
The two new batsmen Kyle Helm and Matt Greenall battled away but with the score on 34 both were out, Kyle Helm went first bowled by Kuldeep Singh for 2 (24 balls) 34-8, Matt Greenall followed bowled by Freddie Fallows for 7 (24 balls) 34-9
Jonathan Millward 7no (20 balls) and Caleb Bradford 13no (21 balls) saw the visitors close on 55-9 in their 32 overs.
The wickets were shared equally amongst the Kendal bowlers, Chris Miller took 2-11 from 7 overs, Freddie Fallows 2-12 off 10,Kuldeep Singh 2-15 from 9 and Toby Tyson 2-15 off 6
The Kendal reply followed the same pattern as the visitors innings no one being able to stay at the wicket. Freddie Fallows and Paul Dodds opened but both departed with the score on 4, Paul Dodds went first bowled by Matt Greenall for 0 (6 balls) 4-1
Freddie Fallows followed lbw to Jonathan Millward for 4 (7 balls) 4-1, Chris Miller and Bradley Earl were the new batsmen but like the opening pair were both out on the same score, Matt Greenall trapped Bradley Earl lbw for 1 (4 balls), 8-3, Chris Miller was stumped by Kyle Helm off Jonathan Millard for 2 (7 balls) 8-4
Matt Greenall claimed his third wicket bowling Finlay Richardaon for 0 (7 balls) 12-5. Sam Fletcher and Lewis Richardson dug in and battled to rebuild the innings, Caleb Bradford broke the partnership having Lewis Richardson caught by Matthew De Villiers for 12 (22 balls) 28-6.
Will Baverstock joined Sam Fletcher and for the third time in this innings both were out on the same score, Caleb Bradford claimed his second wicket bowling Sam Fletcher for 10 (47 balls) 39-7, Matthew De Villiers bowled Will Baverstock for 0 (13 balls) 39-8
Caleb Bradford bowled Kuldeep Singh for 0 (13 balls) with the first ball of the 21st over, Kendal were 41-9 needing 15 runs for victory with 12 overs, remaining Longridge needed one wicket for victory.
Toby Tyson 12no (32 balls) and Matthew Park 5no (33 balls) saw the hosts home on 59-9 in 30.5 overs
The valiant Longridge bowling figures were Caleb Bradford 3-10 from 10 overs, Matt Greenall 3-14 off 5, Jonathan Millward 2-16 from 9 and Matthew De Villiers 1-17 off 6.5 overs
Penrith v Eccleston (Chorley)
The match at Tynefield Park was abandoned without a ball being bowled so Eccleston CC (Chorley) will have to wait another week to play their first game in the Northern Premier Cricket League.
St Annes v Leyland
Leyland won the toss at Vernon Road and put the hosts into bat first, Tom Higson and Yohan De Silva opened but with the score on 23 Tom Higson was run out by Kurtis Watson for 16 (15 balls) 23-1
Luke Jardine came in at number three and with Yohan De Silva steadily moved the score along until with their partnership on 111 (Nelson) Luke Jardine was caught by Jacob Wright off Iain Critchley for 47 (80 balls). 134-2
Nathan Bolus was next in but was soon out, caught by Kurtis Watson off Kerwin Mungroo for 3 (7 balls) 139-3. Kervin Mungroo claimed two wickets in his next over, firstly Gurman Bains trapped lbw for 0 (5 balls) 141-4, followed by Harry Birkman caught behind by Adam Sexton for 0 (2 balls) 141-5
Nathan Armstrong replaced Birkman but soon fell to Iain Critchley bowled for 0 (4 balls) 142-6. Disaster struck for the hosts losing two wickets on the same score. Yohan De Silva had been holding the innings together but he was out next caught by Kurtis Watson off Iain Critchley for 81 (126 balls) 151-7
James Bradley was bowled by Kerwin Mungroo for 2 (8 balls) 151-8, Mitch Bolus and Ryan Birkman were the new batsmen, Mitch Bolus was on 10 (10 balls) when he was caught by Andrew Jacques off Kurtis Watson, 167-9
Ryan Birkman was joined by Keith Reid and they kept the scoreboard ticking over until Keith Reid was run out by Kurtis Watson for 3 (4 balls) 180 all out in 45.4 overs. Ryan Birkman was undefeated on 16 (13 balls).
Kerwin Mungroo took 4-49 from 12.4 overs supported by Iain Critchley 3-47 off 15, Kurtis Watson 1-34 from 8 and Andrw Jacques 0-48 off 10
Jacob Wright and James Rounding opened for the visitors and gave them a brilliant start of 83, James Rounding was the batman out caught by Mitch Bolus off Yohan De Silva for 29 (76 balls) 83-1
Zak Willox was in at three and with Jacob Wright took the score to 130 when Wright was caught and bowled by Keith Reid for 87 (122 balls) 130-2. Kurtis Watson replaced Wright and with Willox saw the visitors home on 182-2 in 47 overs. Zak Willox was 57no (56 balls) and Kurtis Watson 9no (28 balls)
For St Annes Yohan De Silva took 1-29 from 9 overs, Keith Reid 1-29 off 7, Harry Birkman 0-25 from 6, Tom Higson 0-41 off 11 and Mitch Bolus on-58 from 14
