The Northern Cricket League Review

On a blustery day the Northern Premier League 2022 season begins.

The champions Blackpool win, so do Garstang, Kendal and Longridge. Vernon Carus in their first season lose to Chorley and Penrith returning after one year out lose to St Annes with Fleetwood and Morecambe moving to The Palace Shield

DIVISION ONE:

Blackpool v Leyland

Blackpool won the toss at Stanley Park and invited the visitors to bat first, Leyland made 194 for 9 in their 50 overs

Jacob Wright 73 was their top scorer with contributions from Andrew Makinson 37 and James Rounding 24

The wickets were shared amongst the Blackpool bowlers, Dylan Henshall 3-24 from 8 overs, Arran Lewin 3-36 off 12 and Matthew Grindley 3-58 from 15

In reply Blackpool knocked off the runs in 42 overs scoring 195-6, Opener Tomas King with 89 and Dylan Henshall 57 put the hosts on their way to victory

For Leyland Ben Weaver took 2-22 from 6 overs, Iain Critchley 2-30 off 11, Nathan McDonnell 1-38 from 9 and Karl Cross 1-44 off 7

Chorley v Vernon Carus

Chorley entertained Vernon Carus in their first Northern Premiership league match at Windsor Park, Chorley won the toss and chose to bat first

Ben Simpkins and Andrew Holdsworth opened the batting and took the score to 19 when Simpkins was bowled by Jacob Holland for 11 (24 balls) 19-1

Harry Barclay joined Holdsworth but with the total on 51 Barclay was caught behind by Bob Bridges off Joe Allen for 12 (38 balls) 51-2

Roshen Silva was in at 4 but when he had made 11 (15 balls) he was stumped by Bob Bridges off Joe Allen, 73-3. Andrew Holdsworth's patient innings came to a close caught by Matthew Timms off Max Livesey for 36 (98 balls) 73-4

Alfie Dobson and Edwin Moulton began the task of rebuilding the innings and had moved the score onto 129 when Dobson was out hit wicket off Max Livesey for 23 (56 balls). 129-5

Joseph Tiffin joined Moulton and they took the score to 175-5 in their 50 overs, Edwin Moulton 54no (59 balls) and Joseph Tiffin 21 no (11 balls

The Vernon Carus wicket takers were Joe Allen 2-41 from 14 overs, Jacob Holland 1-39 off 14, Max Livesey 1-46 from 7 and Matthew Timms 1-48 off 15

Yasin Patel and Matthew Stevenson opened but both were soon out, Matthew Stevenson was the first out bowled by Louis Johnsaon for 4 (5 balls) 4-1, Patel followed stumped by Harry Barclay off Johnson for 1 (18 balls) 5-2

Jamie Rigby was in at 3 but was bowled by Edwin Moulton for 0 (6 balls) 5-3. Wes Royal and Christian Ash dug in and began to rebuild the innings but Sam Steeple had other ideas

He had Wes Royal caught by Ben Simpkins for 15 (25 balls) 52-4, then he bowled Bob Bridges for 5 (16 balls) 62-5, Matthew Timms fell on the same score bowled by Steeple for 0 (3 balls) 62-6

Christian Ash's battling innings came to a close when he became Steele's fourth victim bowled for 31 (47 balls) 63-7. Steeple added more misery to the visitors cause by bowling Ben Thomas for 0 (13 balls) 64-8

Vernon Carus were staring defeat in the face but Jacob Holland and Joe Allen dug in and made the hosts fight for their wickets. They had put on 29 runs when Holland was trapped lbw by Sam Steeple for 12 (42 balls) 93-9

The end came two runs later with Joe Allen's fighting innings coming to an end caught by Ben Simpkins off Will Moulton for 13 (51 balls). Vernon Carus were bowlled out for 95 in 37.5 overs

Sam Steeple's figures were 13 overs 7 maidens 31 runs 6 wickets, he was supported by Louis Johnson 2-25 from 7, Will Moulton 1-5 off 6.5 and Edwin Moulton 1-15 from 8

Garstang v Netherfield

Garstang won the toss at the Riverside Sports ground and asked the visitors to bat first. Ben Barrow and Josh Dixon opened the batting and made steady progress with an opening partnership of 59 when Dixon was bowled by Danny Gilbert for 17 (32 balls) 59-1

Daniel Bernet came in at 3 but quickly became Danny Gilbert's second victim bowled for 1 (5 balls) 61-2. Gilbert was not finnished having Ben Barrow caught behind by Matthew Crowther for 42 (79 balls), 66-3

John Mason joined Finlay Richardson and they moved the score onto 80 when Mason was trapped lbw by Ian Walling for 10 (19 balls) 80-4. Bradley Earl was Richardson's next partner and they had added 33 runs when Earl was trapped lbw by Punit Bisht for 23 (39 balls) 113-5

Lee Hogg was next in and the scorebaord was ticking over but the return of Danny Gilbert to the attack saw him remove Lee Hogg caught behind by Matthew Crowther for 15 (27 balls) 141-6. Danny Gilbert ran out Oli Wileman for 0 147-7

Samuel Medhurst was Richardson's next partner and they had a partnership of 25 when Danny Gilbert claimed his fifth wicket that of Finlay Richardson bowling him for 42 ( 65 balls) 172-8

Louis Backhouse came in at 10 and was bowled by Ian Walling for 1 (2 balls) 173-9. Samuel Medhurst 11no (19 balls) and Matt Jackson 6no (12 balls) saw the visitors through their 50 overs closing on 184-9

Danny Gilbert took 5-60 from 13 overs with Punit Bisht 1-22 off 7 and Ian Walling 2-45 from 13

Michael Wellings and Michael Walling opened for Garstang and lost Wellings caught behind by Finlay Richardson off Louis Backhouse for 1 (5 balls). 1-1

Punit Bisht joined Walling and they took the score to 95 when Walling was caught by Oli Wileman off Daniel Bernet for 35 (65 balls) 95-2. Mark Walling came in at 4 and with Bisht added 74 runs when Bisht was trapped lbw by John Mason for 92 (109 balls) 166-3

Louis Backhouse give the visitors a glimmer of hope by having Mark Walling caught by Daniel Bernet for 31 (56 balls) without further addition to the score. 166-4.
Ryan Pearson (8no (21 balls) and Tom Wells 6no (16 balls) saw the hosts home reaching 185-4 in 45 overs.

The Netherifled wicket takers were Louis Backhouse 2-25 from 11 overs, John Mason 1-23 off 8 and Daniel Bernet 1-43 from 8

Kendal v Fulwood & Broughton

Kendal won the toss at Shap Road and decided to bat first. Chris Miller and Paul Dodds opened and with 7 on the board Chris Miller was trapped lbw by Jon Fenton for 7 (6 balls) 7-1

Harry Lee joined Dodds and they were tied down by the visitors attack, the total was 25 when Lee was caught by Zach Proctor off Dom Jackson for 8 (39 balls) 25-2.

Rongsen Jonathan came in at 4 but soon lost Dodds stumped by Mike Sambell off Dom Jackson for 12 (50 balls) 36-3. Oliver Tyson was next in and with Jonathan added 67 runs when Tyson was trapped lbw by Sonal Dinusha for 20 (56 balls) 103-4

Incoming batsman Sam Fletcher was bowled for 0 (7 balls) by James Lupton. 104-5. Joseph Dodds joined Jonathan and they kept the scoreboard ticking over, on 138 Jonathan was stumped by Mike Sambell off Sonal Dinusha for 74 (102 balls). 138-6

Richard Dakin replaced Jonathan but lost Dodds lbw to Jon Fenton for 9 (18 balls) 140-7. Dakin 4no (13 balls) and new batsman Kuldeep Singh 9no (10 balls) saw the hosts to the close of their innings 152-7 in 50 overs.

The visitors wicket takers were Jon Fenton 2-27 from 9 overs, Sonal Dinusha 2-37 off 14, Dom Jackson 2-40 from 12 and James Lupton 1-13 off 4

The wicket was no easier for the visitors opening batsmen Matthew Rosbottom and Ben Parkinson, the score was 12 when Rosbottom was caught by Matthew Park off Kuldeep Singh for 2 (16 balls) 12-1

Sonal Dinusha joined Parkinson and thier partnership was 58 when Rongsen Jonathan bowled Ben Parkinson for 21 (65 balls) 70-2. Jonathan then srruck a vital blow for the hosts trapping Dinusha lbw for 41 (51 balls) 71-3

Jonathan was not finnished trapping new batsman Matthew Smith lbw for 1 (16 balls) 75-4. Mike Sambell and Mark Smith were the two new batsmen but Smith soon went lbw to Chris Miller for 1 (11 balls) 75-5

Mike Sambell and new partner Jon Fenton dug in and tried to get the visitors back in the game, they had put on 29 runs when Sambell was caught and bowled by Chris Miller for 20 (55 balls) 104-6. Miller struck again removing Fenton caught by Alec Carradus for 8 (34 balls) 105-7

Kuldeep Singh was brought back into the attack and cleaned up the tail, firstly trapping James Lupton lbw for 0 (2 balls) 113-8. next having Dom Jackson caught by Matthew Park for 1 (2 balls) 115-9 and finally bowling Chris Brookes for 0 (6 balls) 119 all out in 45.2 overs

Kuldeep Singh lead the host wicket takers with 4-12 from 7.2 overs with Chris Miller 3-39 off 15 and Rongsen Jonathan 3-40 from 15

Lancaster v Longridge

Lancaster won the toss at Lune Road and invited the visitors to bat first, Luke Platt and Joshua Mullin opened, Platt had made 6 (19 balls) when he was trapped lbw by Irfan Qayyum, 10-1

First down was Connor Rutland, he soon lost his partner Joshua Mullin caught by Jamie Heywood for 4 (15 balls) off Ifan Qayyum. Zac Christie came in at 4 and with Rutland had the scoreboard ticking over until on 69 Christie was caught by Irfan Qayyum off Tom Rose for 26 (34 balls) 69-3

Rutland's new partner was James Whitehead and their partnership had reached 43 when Whitehead was caught behind by Lee Sparks off Ben Simm for 16 (33 balls) 112-4. Thomas Turner in next but was run out for 5 (11 balls) by David Steinson 128-5

In at no6 was William Vause to support Connor Rutland, they had added 39 runs when Vause fell caught by Jamie Heywood off Ben Simm for 9 (20 balls) 167-6. Rhys Morgan continued in the building of a good score but became Ben Simm's third victim bowled for 10 (16 balls) 181-7

Connor Rutland reached his century but fell on 112 ((126 balls) caught by Laurie Atkinson off Ben Simm, 212-8. Liam Moffat bowled Jake Durnell for 1 (5 balls) 216-9. Ben Simm finnished off the Longridge innings with his fifth wicket having Jonathan Millward caught by Jamie Heywood for 0 (2 balls) 217 all out in 49.3 overs

The Lancaster wicket takers were Ben Simm 5-55 from 11.3 overs, Irfan Qayyum 2-29 off 7, Tom Rose 1-22 from 6 and Liam Moffat 1-52 off 15

Steven Fisher and Irfan Qayyum opened for the hosts but quickly lost Fisher bowled by Jonathan Millward for 0 (10 balls) 6-1. Jamie Heywood joined Qayyum and they trook the score to 44 when both were out.

Heywood went first trapped lbw off Jonathan Millward for 6 (17 balls) 44-2. Qayyam was out also lbw for 36 (34 balls) off Caleb Bradford 44-3. Eddie Steinson and Laurie Atkinson were given the task to rebuild the innings but Atkinson fell lbw to Jonathan Millward for 2 (18 balls) 55-4

Ben Simm was in next but was soon out caught by James Whitehead off Jake Durnell for 2 (8 balls) 58-5. Eddie Steinson had been battling away but fell trapped lbw by Jake Durnell for 10 (35 balls) 73-6. William Vause bowled Elliot Marshall for 0 (1 ball) 71-7

The visitors were now closing in on victory and with the loss of David Steinson stumped by Thomas Turner off Jake Durnell for 15 (26 balls) 91-8 the end was very near.

William Vause mopped up the tail bowling Liam Moffat for 5 (4 balls) 96-9, and next ball bowling Tom Rose for 0 as Lancaster were 96 all out in 26.2 overs

The wickets were shared amongst the Longridge bowlers, Jake Durnell taking 3-20 from 6 overs, Jonathan Millward 3-28 off 8, William Vause 3-34 from 8.2 and Caleb bradford 1-8 off 4

Penrith v St Annes

St Annes won the toss at Tynefield Park and invited the hosts to bat first on their return to the Premier League. Nicky Burns and Asher Hart opened and took the score to 21 when Hart was caught by Luke Jardine off Mitch Bolus for 11 (16 balls) 21-1.

Owen Jones came in at 3 , they had added 22 runs when Nicky Burns was trapped lbw by Tom Higson for 10 (40 balls) 43-2. Higson struck again the next ball bowling Greg Cameron for 0 (1 ball), 43-3.

James Bowman joined Jones but lost Jones caught by Tom Higson off Tom Bradley for 18 (29 balls) 45-4. Alister Craig came in but was bowled by Tom Higson after he made 3 (11 balls) 49-5.

Penrith were in desperate trouble and James Bowman and Nick Hodgson battled to rebuild the innings, they took the score to 85 when Hodgson was bowled by Tom Bradley for 8 (32 balls) 85-6

Bowman's battling innings came to an end when he was run out by Luke Jardine for 29 (44 balls) 91-7. Ollie Greenwood and Finlay Hansford dug in but were seperated by Tom Higson having Hansford caught by Tom Bradley for 7 (30 balls) 103-8

Lukman Vahauwala cleaned up the tail firstly having Ollie Greenwood caught behind by James Bradley for 12 (47 balls) 104-9, he then had James Ellis caught behind by James Bradley for 0 (5 balls) as Penrith were bowled out for 113 in 43.3 overs

Tom Higson with 4-31 from 12overs was the visitors leading wicket taker well supported by Lukman Vahaluwala 2-7 off 8.3, Tom Bradley 2-36 from 12 and Mitch Bolus 1-20 off 5

Tom Higson and Luke Jardine opened and destroyed the Penrith attack reaching 115-0 in only 15.3 overs. Tom Higson was the destroyer with an unbeaten 80no (42 balls) with 16x4 and 1x6, Luke Jardine was 26no (51 balls)
