The Northern Cricket League Review

Round 16 of the Northern Premier League saw wins for the top three Blackpool, Longridge and Lancaster. There were also wins for Kendal and Netherfield

The match between St Annes and Fulwood & Broughton was a winning draw for St Annes

On Sunday the two matches postponed due to covid on the 17th July were played resulting in wins for Leyland and Netherfield

Blackpool v Morecambe

Blackpool won the toss at Stanley Park and invited the visitors to bat first, Lewis Smith and Luke Pearson opened and battled against the Blackpool attack, Luke Pearson was the first to go bowled by Jamie Thomson for 0 (24 balls), 7-1

Rongsen Jonathan came in at 3 and with Smith took the score to 30 when Smith was caught by Jamie Thomson off Matthew Grindley for 12 (42 balls) 30-2

Ryan Pearso joined Jonathan and they had a partnership of 23 when Jonathan was caught behind by Ben Howarth off Matthew Grindley for 27 (40 balls) 53-3

Matthew Siddall retuned to the attack and immediately took two wickets, first Ryan Pearson trapped lbw for 17 (29 balls), 62-4, five balls later Freddie Leeks fell to the same fate lbw for 0, 62-5

The Morecambe innings collapsed against the bowling of Siddall and Joshua Boyne losing five wickets on the same score, the total was 66 Kieran Moffat was out caught and bowled to Matthew Siddall for 2 (6 balls) 66-6

Joshua Boyne had Alex Briggs caught by Ciaran Johnson for 4 (21 balls) 66-7, Boyne then caught LLoyd Smith for 0 (4 balls) off Matthew Siddall, 66-8,

Boyne finished off the Morecambe innings bowling Joel Derham for 0 (4 balls) 66-9, then next ball bowled Louis Backhouse for 0, 66 all out in 29.5 overs

Matthew Siddall took 4-7 from 5 overs, Joshua Boyne 3-25 off 7.5, Matthew Grindley 2-15 from 10 and Jamie Thomson 1-16 off 7

Tomas King and Sam Dutton opened and had made 39 when King was bowled by Louis Backhouse for 28 (27 balls) 39-1, Ciaran Johnson was on 1 (2 balls) when he was bowled by Liam Moffat , 46-2.

Blackpool had victory in sight when Liam Moffat bowled Sam Dtton for 24 (38 balls) 61-3, in the next over Shivam Chauhan hit the six runs required off the first two balls for Blackpool to close on 67-3 in 13.2 overs.

Chauhan was 12no (13 balls) and Joshua Boyne 0no without facing.

The Morecambe wicket takers were Liam Moffat 2-35 from 7 and Louis Backhouse 1-26 off 6

Fleetwood v Kendal

Kendal won the toss at Broadwater and asked the home team to bat first and had instant success, Charlie Clark was bowled by Kuldeep Singh for 0 (5 balls) 0-1

Things did not improve when Adam Sharrocks was bowled by Toby Tyson for 0 (18 balls) 3-2, Jeremy Davies and incoming batsman Dyllan Matthew tried to rebuild the innings, with the score on 35 Matthews was stumped by Shane Hyland off Chalana De Silva for 23 (22 balls) 35-3

Chris Miller joined the attack and in his second over he bowled Declan Clerkin for 1 (6 balls), 36-4, in his third over he had Jeremy Daives stumped by Shane Hyland for 13 (42 balls) 37-5

Tom Wilson had made 1 (18 balls) when he was caught by Matthew Park off Chalana De Silva, 39-6, The innings was becoming a procession Harry McAleer faced only five balls then was caught behind by Shane Hyland off Chris Miller for 0, 40-7

Wayne Clarke and Joseph Warwick dug in but with ten runs added Clarke was caught and bowled by Chalana De Silva for 5 (36 balls) 50-8.

Chris Miller then wrapped up the Fleetwood innings bowling Joseph Warwick for 11 (40 balls) 59-9, then trapping James Amor lbw for 0 (23 balls) 60 allout in 37 overs. Alex Ryder was 1no (8 balls)

Chris Miller took 5-16 from 13 overs, Chalana De Silva 3-10 off 12, Kuldeep Singh 1-15 from 6 and Toby Tyson 1-15 off 6

The Kendal opening pair of Chris Miller and Darren Nigtingale had reached 14 when Miller was caught by Adam Sharrocks off James Amor for 9 (19 balls) 14-1

Darren Nightingale took charge of the Kendal reply taking most of the strike, he lost Paul Dodds for 4 (7 balls) bowled by Dyllan Matthes 45-2, Chalana De Silva soon followed caught by Jeremy Davies off Dyllan Matthews for 2 (2 balls) 47-3

That was the last success for the home team as Nightingale 40no 39 balls) and Oliver Tyson 1no (3 balls) saw his team home on 61-3 in 11.4 overs

Dyllan Matthews took 2-17 from 5.4 overs, James Amor 1-30 off 5

Lancaster v Leyland

Leyland won the toss at Lune Road and put the hosts into bat, Jamie Heywood and Eddie Steinson opened the batting but Seinson was soon out caught by Michael Birchall off Saliya Saman for 0 (7 balls) 0-1

Atharva Taide joined Heywood and they had a partnership of 84 when Heywood was caught by James Rounding off Kurtis Watson for 17 (61 balls) 84-2.

David Rippengall was in at 4 and with Taide they put on 36 runs when Taide was caught behind by Joe Wallwork-Woods off Nathan McDonnell for 71 (94 balls) sixty of which were in boundries (9x4 1x6) 120-3

Only four runs had been added when Rippengal was bowled by Michael Birchall for 20 927 balls), 124-4, Steven Fisher had replaced Taide but he was stumped by Joe Wallwork-Woods for 4 off Nathan McDonnell, 130-5

The score had moved on to 143 when the hosts lost three wickets, David Steinson was stumped by Joe Wallwork-Woods off Michael Birchall for 4 (14 balls) 143-6, Laurie Atkinson was caught behind by Joe Wallwork-Woods off Nathan McDonnell for 13 (30 balls), 143-7, Ben Simm was caught by Nathan McDonnell off Birchall for 0 (2 balls) 143-8

Michael Birchall took his fourth wicket Ifan Qayyum caught by Jacob Wright for 2 (5 balls) 146-9. The innings closed on 148 all out in 44.4 overs with Lee Sparks caught by Jacob Wright off Nathan McDonnell for 0 (4 balls), Damar Graham remained undefeated on 3no (13 balls)

Michael Birchall took 4-24 from 8 overs, Nathan McDonnell 4-39 off 14.4, Saliya Saman 1-19 from 8 and Kurtis Watson 1-26 from 6

Leyland got off to a good start reaching 54 when the opening partnership of Jacob Wright and James Rounding was broken, Rounding stumped by Lee Sparks off Atharva Taide for 26 (38 balls), 54-1

Kurtis Watson came in at 3 but on 11 (14 balls) was bowled by Atharva Taide, 66-2, Jacob Wright was next out caught by Irfan Qayyum off Ben Simm for 27 (51 balls), 80-3 Taide claimed his third victim Karl Cross lbw for 9 (19 balls) 99-4

Ben Simm had Nathan McDonnell caught by Jamie Haeywood for 2 (8 balls) 102-5. Andrew Makinson was soon out lbw to Atharva Taide for 0 (3 balls) 103-6. Taide took his fifth wicket that of Saliya Saman caught behind by Lee Sparks for 26 (36balls), 114-7

The visitors lost their eigth wicket on 118 Joe Wallwork-Woods bowled by Atharva Taide for 2 (13 balls). The pendulum was moving towards a home victory, Iain Critchley and David Makinson dug in and the score crept up slowly but on 137 Ben Simm bowled Makinson for 13 (18 balls), 137-9

Lancaster were in the same situation as the match against Morecambe two weeks ago needing one wicket and the oposition needing not many runs. As previously the home team triumphed with Irfan Qayyum bowling Iain Critchley for 17 (33 balls) leaving Leyand 141 all out in 39.2 overs. Michael Birchall was 0no (3 balls)

The Lancaster hero was Atharva Taide with 6-25 from 15 overs supported by Ben Simm 3-67 off 15 and Irfan Qayyum 1-17 from 4.2

Longridge v Chorley

Chorley won the toss at the Newsham Memorial ground and invited the hosts to bat first in a reduced over match, Longridge made 170-8 in their 46 overs thanks to opening batsman Joshua Mullin 90no and Daniel Wilson 24

Keiran McCullagh took 4-32 from 14 overs, Louis Johnson 1-12 0ff 7, Samuel Steeple 1-25 from 7, Ian Oakes 1-26 from 4 and Will Moulton 1-42 off 9

In reply Chorley were bowled out for 129 in 40.4 overs, the top three were their highest scorers, Siddesh Lad 35, Harry Barclay 24 and Louis Johnson 21

Jake Durnell did the damage with 5-9 from 3 overs, William Vause 2-26 off 6.4, Daniel Wilson 2-37 from 14 and Jonathan Millward 1-28 off 9

Netherfield v Garstang

Netherfield won the toss at Parkside Road and put the visitors into bat, Gartstang were bowled out for 172 in 47.5 overs. Only Punit Bisht 29 and Michael Wellings 25 of the top six made double figures.

Gartstang can be thankful to their tail for setting a defendable total, No 10 Toby Lush top scored with 31 supported by Mohammed Yusuf 28, Ian Walling 18 and Mark Winstanley 18

The Netherfield wicket takers were Samuel Medhurst 4-33 from 10.5 overs, Lewis Richardson 2-11 off 5, Richie Forsyth 2-29 from 10, Robbie Dwyer 1-38 off 8 and Shrikant Mundhe 1-42 from 11

In reply Netherfield knocked off the runs in the last over closing on 173-7 in 51.2 overs. Ben Barrow top scored with 61 and Shrikant Mundhe made 54

For Garstang Ian Walling took 3-40 from 16 overs, Mohammed Yusuf 3-53 off 15.2 and Punit Bisht 1-17 from 4

St Annes v Fulwood & Broughton

Fulwood & Broughton won the toss at Vernon Road and asked St Annes to bat first, They had early success Luke Jardine caught behind by Dominic Jackson off Jon Fenton for 0 (2 balls) 4-1

Nathan Bolus joined Tom Higson and they put on 70 runs until the partnership was broken with Nathan Bolus out lbw to Chris Brookes for 26 (59 balls) 74-2

Nathan Armstrong came in at 4 but lost Tom Higson bowled by Arbab Munir for 60 (57 balls) 90-3. The feature of Higson's innings was 50 of his sixty runs came in boundries 8x4 and 3x6

Armstrong and new batsman Andy Drake kept the scoreboard ticking over until Armstrong had to leave the field retired hurt with his score on 21 (44 balls).

Alex Bradley replaced Armstrong and they took the score to 136 when Drake was caught behind by Mike Sambell for 25 (61 balls) 136-4. Nathan Bend joined Bradley and put on 31 when Bradley was run out by Mike Sambell for 18 (38 balls) 167-5

Nathan Bend followed without any further addition to the score caught by Ben Parkinson off Arbab Munir for 13 (27 balls) 167-6. Harry Birkman 17no (13 balls) and Tom Bradley 4no (10 balls) saw St Annes close on 199-6 in their 50 overs

Arbab Munir took 3-40 from 9 overs, Chris Brookes 1-36 off 11 and Jon Fenton 1-44 from 13

Mark Smith and Matthew Rosbottom opened for the visitors, Rosbottom was bowled by Tom Bradley for 1 (3 balls), 6-1. Matthew Smith came in at 3, the visitors batsmen being very watchful of the St Annes attack.

The total was 57 when Mark Smith was run out for 23 (56 balls), 57-2. Lewis Wellings lasted two balls caught behind by James Bradley off Tom Higson for 0, 57-3 Higson took his second wicket bowling Abhay Negi for 7 (25 balls) 78-4

Matthew Smith's patient innings came to an end trapped lbw by Curtis Fletcher for 45 (81 balls) 83-5. Mike Sambell and Ben Parkinson continued the steady progress until Parkinson was caught by Andy Drake off Harry Birkman for 9 (20 balls) 101-6

The visitors had reached 115 when they lost two wickets, Mike Sambell was out caught off Curtis Fletcher for 22 (39 balls) 115-7, then Dominic Jackson was stumped by James Bradley off Tom Higson for 0 (7 balls) 115-8

St Annes had 10 overs to claim two wickets and victory, Nathan Bolus gave the hosts a glimmer of hope in the 47th over when he had Chris Brookes caught by Alex Bradley for 18 (16 balls) 149-9.

Jon Fenton 18no (51 balls) and Arbab Munir 0no (5 balls) saw the visitors to the close on 156-9 in their 50 overs

Tom Higson took 3-46 from 15 overs, Curtis Fletcher 2-26 off 8, Nathan Bolus 1-25 from 11, Tom Bradley 1-28 off 6 and Harry Birkman 1-29 from 10

Sunday 1st August (Matches previously postponed due to covid)

Fleetwood v Leyland

In this rearranged match from the 17th July Leyland won the toss at Broadwater and elected to bat first, They made 159-8 in their 50 overs thanks to Opener Jacob Wright 47 (97 balls) and the tail, No8 Karl Cross 44 (72 balls) and Joe Wallwork-Woods 33no (55 balls)

The Fleetwood wicket takers were Dyllan Matthews 3-31 from 15 overs, Declan Clerkin 2-24 off 6, Jeremy Davies 2-45 from 11 and Jack Wilkinson 1-37 off 15

In reply Fleetwood were bowled out for 103 in 33.1 overs with only two players reaching double figures, No 10 Alex Ryder 41 (57 balls) and Harry McAteer 14 (15 balls)

The Leyland hero was Janith Liyanage taking 7-35 from 12 overs, Nathan McDonnell took 1-1 off 1.1, Kurtis Watson 1-8 from 5 and Karl Cross 1-24 off 8

St Annes v Netherfield

This is the rearranged match from the 17th July, Netherfield won the toss at Vernon Road and decided to bat first, They got off to a bad start with Josh Dixon caught behind by James Bradley off Harry Birkman for 1 (5 balls) 1-1

New batsman Finlay Richardson had made 9 (13 balls) when he was caught by Harry Birkman off Tom Bradley, 22-2. Shrikant Mundhe joined Ben Barrow and they put on 92 runs when Ben Barrow was caught by Curtis Fletcher off Nathan Bolus for 45 (78 balls) 114-3

Bradley Earl was in at No5 but was run out by Nathan Bend for 0 (5 balls) 114-4, Lewis Richardson came in but was out for 0 (12 balls) caught by Alex Bradley off Tom Higson, 119-5. three balls later Higson had Luke Atkinson caught by Nathan Bolus for 0 (2 balls) 120-6

Reece Irving joined Shrikant Mundhe and their partnership was 33 when Irving was bowled by Curtis Fletcher for 11 (21 balls) 153-7. Isaac Medhurst replaced Irving and with Mundhe saw the visitors close on 196-7 in their 50 overs with Mundhe 104no (146 balls) and Medhurst 13no (18 balls)

Tom Higson took 2-47 from 14 overs, Tom Bradley 1-21 off 8, Nathan Bolus 1-34 from 11, Curtis Fletcher 1-35 off 6 and Harry Birkman 1-46 from 11

The St Annes openers Tom Higson and Luke Jardine got them off to a good start with a partnership of 57 then Jardine was caught by Ben Barrow off Lewis Richardson for 25 (30 balls), 57-1

Nathan Bolus joined Higson and they put on 43 runs when Bolus was caught by Josh Dixon off Reece Irving for 21 (44 balls) 100-2. Andy Drake replaced Bolus but was soon out caught by Ben Barrow off Marc Hadwin for 1 (7 balls) 101-3

Alex Bradley was Marc Hadwin's second wicket caught by Samuel Medhurst for 5 ( 5 balls) 117-4, Tom Higson's innings came to an end caught by Lewis Richardson off Reece Irving for 65 (74 balls). As the previous day 54 runs came in boundries 121-5

Nathan Bend and Harry Birkman were going along nicely until Birkman was trapped lbw by Samuel Medhurst for 17 (21 balls) 155-6, Nathan Bend soon followed caught Josh Dixon off Lewis Richardson for 24 (38 balls) 165-7

Samuel Medhurst removed any doubt of the outcome of the match with two wickets in three balls, firstly bowling James Bradley for 3 (3 balls) 168-8 tnen two balls later trapping Curtis Fletcher lbw for 0 (2 balls) 168-9

Lewis Richardson gave the visitors victory having Ryan Birkman caught by Isaac Medhurst for 0 (5 balls) meaning St Annes were bowled out for 173 in 38.5 overs

Samuel Medhurst took 3-23 from 7 overs, Lewis Richardson 3-32 off 6.5, Marc Hadwin 2-33 from 9 and Reece Irving 2-44 off 9
