Match Day 22nd July 2017

The Northern Cricket League Review

Netherfield continued to dominate at the top of Division One while the battle for survival continued at the foot of the table on another afternoon of action in The Northern Premier Cricket League.

DIVISION ONE:

Barrow v Fleetwood

Dean Bell hit an undefeated knock of 109 as Fleetwood picked up a much needed 8 wicket win at Barrow.

Barrow who were without Toby Mowat and Daryl Wearing continued to struggle in what was a crucial game for both sides.

Barrow who batted first were all out for 133 off 48 overs, Matthew Taylor the main run getter with 51.

However Fleetwood Professional Neels Bergh returned figures of 6-28 in an impressive performance that saw Barrow skittled out.

In reply Dean Bell opened and batted throughout with an undefeated knock of 109 as Fleetwood closed on 136-2 off 21 overs.

Blackpool v Lancaster

Blackpool bounced back from a poor run of results to defeat Lancaster who themselves slumped to the foot of Division One.

Sub Professional Chris Williams posted an undefeated knock of 88 off 106 balls as Blackpool closed on 176-8.

Lancaster struggled in their reply before being bowled out for 124 off 42 overs, Andy Furniss returned figures of 6-36

Chorley v Preston

Chris Harty returned figures of 7-19 as Chorley defeated Preston by 9 wickets.

Harty's seven wicket haul saw Preston all out for 100 off 45.1 overs.

In reply Will Moulton's undefeated knock of 38 and Edwin Moultons undefeated knock of 34 saw Chorley ease home in 30 overs as they closed on 104-1.

Leyland v Morecambe

(Match Details Courtesy of The Morecambe Visitor)

Improving Morecambe came within a whisker of picking up a vital victory at Leyland on Saturday.

Having posted 143-7 batting first at the Stanning Memorial Ground, Ryan Pearson's men were always on top with the ball against a side that had mixed it at the sharp end of the Northern Premier League Division One table this season.

Leyland's ninth wicket fell with just three balls to go and as the rain poured down Morecambe just couldn't get over the line, the hosts finishing on 129-9.

The visitors had to settle for nine points to Leyland's six but a third game without defeat was enough to see the Woodhill Lane men move off the foot of the table.

They are replaced by Lancaster and also now sit above Barrow, the 2015 champions heading into Saturday's home game against Chorley third from bottom.

Pearson won the toss and elected to bat first on Saturday and Viraj Bhatia and Lewis Smith, both 20, made a solid enough start for the visitors at the top of the order. Both fell to Steven Pallett 3-23 leaving stand-in professional Tony Palladino to try and steer Morecambe towards a good total.

The Derbyshire County Cricket Club contracted player is the latest paid man to replace Ashan Priyanjan, the Sri Lankan unavailable for the rest of the summer having been recalled by his national side.

The former Essex man made 31, his 60-ball innings that included five fours brought to an end by the pick of the Leyland bowlers Ross Bretherton, who ended the afternoon with 4-39 from 14 overs.

Adam Derham provided good support to Palladino with 28.

Having posted a competitive score from their 50 overs, Morecambe raced out of the blocks with the ball. Palladino, who has more than 350 first-class wickets to his name, Eddy Read and Tommy Clough did the early damage as the Leyland top order departed cheaply.

The game-changing stand came from Bretherton, 45, and Andrew Makinson, 23, the pair standing firm for the sixth wicket.

Bretherton was at the crease for an epic 127 balls while Makinson's 65-ball knock included two fours and a six.

It was finally broken but in the bigger picture it was too little, too late for the visitors.

Read, Clough and Lloyd Smith took the wickets to fall down the order but Pearson's side couldn't force a positive result.

Palladino, who will be in the side again against Chorley at Woodhill Lane on Saturday, finished with 3-29, Read 3-27 and Clough 2-19.

Netherfield v Penrith

Netherfield Cricket Club cemented their position at the top of Northern Premier League with a dramatic nine-run victory against Penrith at Parkside Road.

Ben Barrow top scored with 54 from 118 balls as Netherfield were all out for a below-par total of 132.

However, they fought back in the second innings as Tom Williamson returned figures of 5-23, while Marc Hadwin bowled 4-44 as Penrith were bowled out for 123.

After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, Netherfield made a bad start with both Josh Dixon and Obus Pienaar being dismissed by Greg Hall.

Dixon was the first wicket to fall after being caught behind by Kieran Trevaskis, before Pienaar picked out Penrith captain Jonathan Osbourne as Netherfield slumped to 9-2.

Barrow and Williamson began to get run runs on the board, pushing Netherfield beyond 50, but Penrith broke the partnership when Williamson was stumped by Trevaskis off the bowling of Osbourne.

Netherfield's batting woes continued when Lewis Edge, Brad Earl and Dan Ingham were dismissed by Indian sub professional Chirag Khurana, while Netherfield slipped to 72-6.

The Field edged closer to 100 thanks to Lewis Richardson and Barrow, before Jessie Dinnie bowled Richardson for nine.

Mark Clarkson hit a quick knock of 14 off 23 before being run out by Owen Jones, while Dinnie picked up his second wicket to dismiss Marc Hadwin.

Netherfield were bowled out for 132 as Barrow was bowled for 54 by Khurana who finished with figures of 4-32.

In reply, Netherfield applied a lot of pressure on the Penrith openers but Greg Cameron and Sam Hall put on a steady first-wicket stand of 39.

Netherfield made the breakthrough when Hadwin trapped Cameron LBW, before Pienaar bowled Hall as Penrith lost the pair in the space of three runs.

Williamson was brought into the attack and trapped Dinnie LBW, with Penrith still in a strong position at 57-3. Trevaskis and Chirag Khurana edged the visitors towards a likely victory as they reached 81, before Trevaskis picked out Ingham off the bowling of Hadwin.

Khurana and Greg Hall pushed the visitors onto 101 as Penrith required 32 runs to win, but Williamson changed the game after picking up the quick wickets of Hall and Osbourne.

From that point, Penrith collapsed as Hadwin trapped Mark Osbourne LBW, while Williamson claimed the prize wicket of Khurana who was caught behind by Edge.

Williamson completed his five-wicket haul by taking the wicket of Jamie O'Brien who was caught by Barrow as Netherfield edged closer to victory.

Hadwin then dismissed Owen Jones whose drive for six fell into the hands of Pienaar as Netherfield celebrated the most dramatic of victories as Penrith were all out for 123 off 48 overs.

Netherfield host Preston on Saturday before travelling to play Monton and Weaste from the Greater Manchester League on Sunday in the Area Twenty-20 finals.

St Annes v Kendal

St Annes routed Kendal by 10 wickets at Vernon Road.

The Auld Greys who had won the last two matches were left stunned after Matthew Grindley returned figures of 6-24 as Kendal were all out for 62 off 37.5 overs.

The hosts coasted to victory in just 14.4 overs after Atiq-Uz Zaman posted an undefeated knock of 41 as St Annes closed on 63-0.

After losing the toss and being put into bat Kendal were reduced to 14-2 after both Zacchary Mc Caskie and Ben Phillips were dispatched by Matthew Grindley.

Mc Caskie was caught and bowled by Grindley while Phillips picked out St Annes Sub Professional Raji Teja.

Ryan Shepherd posted a top score of 22 off 47 before being bowled by Grindley, while Grindley dismissed Saeed Bariwala and Jason Dawes as Kendal collapsed to 46-5.

St Annes Sub Professional Ravi Teja picked up the wicket of Chris Miller, before Lachlan Stewart was run out by Mustafa Durrani.

Kendal's woes worsened after Grindley bowled Richard Dakin to pick up his sixth wicket of the afternoon, before Teja picked up the wickets of Edward Price and Toby Tysin who was stumped by Richard Staines as Kendal were all out for 62.

St Annes knocked the runs off in 14.4 overs, Atiq-Uz Zaman with an undefeated 41 off 41 balls and Gurman Baines with an undefeated 17 off 47 balls. St Annes finished on 63-0.
