Match Day 30th May 2016

The Northern Cricket League Review for 30th May 2016

DIVISION ONE:

Blackpool v Fleetwood - Stanley Park

On a sunny day at Stanley Park Fleetwood won the toss and asked Blackpool to bat. Matthew Houston and Ciaran Johnson took the score to 57 when Johnson was out for 22

Professional Daryl Mitchell joined Houston and they took reached 82 when Matthew Houston was bowled by Patrick Ashton for 36. Daryl Mitchell soon followed for 21.

Tom Jefferson was jopined by Stephen Twist and they had a partnership of 56 when Jefferson was out for 19. Stephen Twist held the innings together and with Andy Furniss 10 and 16 not out from Joshua Boyne took the score to 217 - 5 in thier 50 overs

Stephen Twist was 81 not out from 73 balls and hit 6 fours and 3 sixes. For Fleetwood Patrick Ashton was their best bowler with 4-70 off 15 overs and Alex Ryder took 1-13 off 5

Fleetwood like Blackpool had a good start but the introduction of Joshua Boyne started the Fleetwood decline. He took the wickets of Adam Parker 34 and the prize wicket of Travis Dean 23.

Daniel Pile joined the attack and they took Fleetwood continued to fall and when James Amor was caught behind by Ben Howarth Fleetwood were all out for 145 in the 43th over

Joshua Boyne who bowled with flight and guile to collect his second five wicket haul in 3 games, took 5-53 off 17 overs with Daniel Pine taking 3-26 off 11.2

Chorley v St Annes - Windsor Park

Chorley won the toss and elected to bat and struggled against the St Annes attack and when Tom Higson came into the attack he removed the middle order cheaply. Edwin Moulton 16no and Keiran McCullagh 32 gave Chorley hope and they were all out for 144 in the 48th over

Tom Higson finnished with 4-33 off 11 overs supported by Mitchell Bolus 3-57, Matthew Grindley 2-35 and Shadley Van Schalkwyk 1-33

In reply St Annes lost an early wicket but bowling changes introducing Wihan Lubbe and James Lee swung the game Chorley's way destroying the St Annes innings.

Shadley Van Schalkwyk tried in vain to hold the innings together with 78, opener Luke Wilks 14 and De Wet Swart 10 were the only other batsmen to reach double figures.

Wihan Lubbe returned figures of 14 overs 5-29 with James Lee 3-38 off 11 and Edwin Moulton took the other two wickets for 36 runs as St Annes were bowled out for 124 in the 40th over

Darwen v Leyland - Birch Hall

Darwen's woes continued as they lost against Leyland. A much improved batting performance from the East Lancashire side saw them post 212-6 from their allocation, this included 64 from professional Shrikant Wagh, 56 from Ammer Mirza, John Cordingley 31 and 26 from Mrk Fiend.

The Leyland wicket takers were Henry Thompson 3-43, Ross Bretherton 2-46 and Steven Pa;;ett 1-41

Unfortunately what followed for Darwen was a lesson in attacking batting as Leyland stormed past their victory target in 37 overs, this was partly thanks to a scorching 71 in only 35 deliveries from Karl Cross. Fellow opener Chris Parkinson made 36 before Richardt Frenz 44no and Henry Thompson 51 to Leyland took the in sight of victory and to the top of the Northern League Table.

Kendal v Netherfield - Shap Road

At Shap Road Netherfield won the toss and elected to bat on a beige wicket and their top order soon got into its stride as Ben Phillips 31, Tom Bruce 74 and John Huck 48no all weighed in with contributions to take Netherfield to 197 all out in the final over. Opening bowlers Adnan Ghaus 3-21 and Syed Ali 4-43 were the main contributors with the ball.

In reply the Shap Road outfit made a steady start as the top three all pitched in with runs, however, none of them could go on to make a telling contribution as Nathan Chambers 5-38 and Tom Bruce 3-42 began to take wickets at regular intervals leaving Kendal 169 all out in the 49th Over.

Morecambe v Lancaster - Woodhill Lane

It was also a delightful day for Morecambe who took the local bragging rights as the first eleven picked up a winning draw at Woodhill Lane.

Morecambe batted first and they certainly took advantage of the pleasant conditions as number three Daryn Smit played wonderfully to score 152 and take Morecambe to a gargantuan total of 258-7 from their allocation. He was supported by Viraj Bhati who made a vigilant 44 at the top of the order. Liam Moffat was the pick of the bowlers for the Lune Road side as he collected 4-84 in 17 overs.

Facing such a task Lancaster were soon in bother as opener Rajat Agarwal was removed by Read for a duck, however professional Abhimanyu Khod 62 stuck around and made life hard for the Morecambe attack, he was well supported by Kieran Moffat 36 after the former was removed by Tommy Clough 2-49

It was left to Ben Simm 22no from 54 and Lawrie Atkinson 5no from 34 to ensure that Morecambe could not bowl Lancaster as they guided Lancaster to 192-6 from their 50 overs.

Penrith v Preston - Tynefield Park

Penrith lost as Preston picked up their second victory of the season in the Eden Valley.

At Tynefield Park, the home side won the toss and elected to bat, they made a steady start as they moved to 52-2 but they then lost two wickets in quick succession to take the impetus from the innings. Fortunately, the middle and lower order batsmen all contributed with runs as Tony Threlkeld 30 guided Penrith to a reasonable total of 183 in their allocation.

Saeed Bariwala 3-39 and Rizawan Ali 3-30 were the pick of the bowlers for the West Cliff side.

It was Bariwala that departed early in their reply as Paul Hindmarch 2-61 removed him in the first over. It was left to skipper Sajid Patel 50 and Mustafa Durrani 34 to rebuild and they obliged as they put on 75 for the second wicket.

Patel was then joined by Lukman Vahaluwala 59no who showed his class in a pacey innings which saw Preston to 186-4 in the 40th over.

Division Two

Division 2 Round Up:

Fleetwood v Blackpool

Blackpool made short work of high flying Fleetwood with the ball, as they routed the Broadwater outfit in 30 overs with Joel Watson bowling immaculately to pick up his maiden 2nd Team Michelle for the miserly cost of 9 runs.

Skipper Sam Owen collected four wickets for no runs in a scarcely believable three over spell, which included a hat-trick, it will suffice to say that the Stanley Park outfit wasted little time in knocking the runs off to keep them ahead of the chasing pack in Division Two.

Lancaster v Morecambe

At Lune Road Lancaster won the toss and elected to bat and they were indebted to a timely knock of 60 not out from their skipper Faizan Khan who led the way with the bat as only three other players made double figures. Lancaster were eventually bowled out for 121 with one ball remaining as Uzair Shah 4-8 and Muhammed Patel 4-28 did the damage with the ball.

Lancaster made a bright start with the ball but some attentive batting from Gulam Maje 43 Ret and Andy Bird 36 got Morecambe's chase on the right track, there was a slight wobble as they approached their target but the middle order managed to see Morecambe home as they moved to 122-4 in the 31st Over.

Leyland v Darwen

Meanwhile at Fox Lane, Leyland batted first and posted a respectable total of 162-8 from their allocation, including 49 from Alex Williams, Matthew Crompton was the pick of the bowlers for the Birch Hall outfit as he collected 7 for 45.

Darwen were then cautious in their response and none of their batsmen really got going but it was not easy for the Leyland bowlers as they were made to work hard. The game eventually fizzled out to a draw as Darwen finished 134-7.

Netherfield v Kendal

At Parkside Road Kendal were asked to bat and Stuart Nixon 4-26 soon found his rhythm as he removed the top three before Ethan Ellwood 20 offered some resistance with the bat, after Scott Clement 4-13 removed him, the Kendal innings began to subside and they were eventually bowled out for 99 in 41.2 overs.

In reply Netherfield found themselves in bother at 27-3 as Marcus Hill 3-53 removed the Netherfield openers with haste but some watchful batting from the middle order got Netherfield within sight of the winning post and they were soon past it as they reached 100-6 in the 30th over.

Preston v Penrith

At West Cliff Preston elected to bat and they were soon in trouble at 33-4 as Sam Hall picked up 4-27 as he bowled accurately to restrict scoring opportunities.

There was some middle order resistance from Preston as their batsmen batted with care but they found in the face of such accurate bowling they found it difficult to score runs and were soon reduced to 94 all out in the 40th over.

Penrith made relatively short work of the victory target as their top order batted guardedly to guide the Tynefield Park outfit to 95-4 in the 26th over and 15 well-earned points.

St Annes v Chorley

At Vernon Road, Alex Howarth invited St Annes to bat and their batsmen all made steady starts as they kept the scoreboard ticking over but unfortunately none of them could go on as the Chorley attack led by Chris Harty 2-23 took regular wickets.

He was assisted by Matthew Tinsley 3-29 and Ben Milnes 3-21 as they restricted St Annes to 169-9 in 45 overs.

In response Chorley also made a steady start at Matt Moore 31 and Max Harper 32 both started brightly but after the latter was removed by Kevin Reid 3-31 St Annes began to make some inroads and it was left to the middle and lower order to guide Chorley home as Ed Melling 33 and Ben Milnes 31 saw the Windsor Park outfit to 173-8 in the 43rd over.
