Match Day 28th May 2016

The Northern Cricket League Review for 28th May 2016

DIVISION ONE:

Barrow v Darwen - Ernest Pass Memorial Ground

Barrow sit atop the Northern League after a convincing victory against bottom placed Darwen at Ernest Pass on Saturday.

After being asked to bowl by Mark Friend the Barrow attack wasted little time as Daryl Wearing was soon amongst the wickets as he removed the two openers for a combined total of 22.

The only batsman to offer any real resistance to accurate Cumbrian attack was professional Shrikant Wagh who made 40, however the innings soon faded after he was removed by Gary Collins 2-9.

The tail could do little to rectify the matter and the side from East Lancashire were all out for 135 at the start of the 37th over.

Kaustubh Pawar has been in exceptional form at the start of the season and it certainly continued as he and Toby Mowat 30 got Barrow off to a solid start in their chase.

Dave Bowden gave some cause for concern for the Cumbrian's 2-37 as he picked up two quick wickets but this was the Birch Hall outfits only success as Pawar picked up runs with alacrity to finish 80 not out with Dean Williams 20no playing the supporting role as Barrow moved to 137-2 in the 35th over.

Lancaster v Chorley - Lune Road

Chorley kept themselves in contention as they made short work of Lancaster on a balmy afternoon at Lune Road.

After winning the toss and electing to bat Chorley made a steady start before wickets began to fall at regular intervals thanks to some tight bowling from Messrs Liam Moffatt 3-39, Ben Simm 3-28 and Charlie Swarbrick 3-30 as none of the Windsor Park top order were allowed to make any major contribution with the bat.

This left Chorley all out for 114 in the 41st over, a total which would certainly have been considered chaseable.

It soon became an uphill task for the side from the Lune Valley as Kieran McCullagh 1-18 and Edwin Moulton 3-15 made rapid inroads removing the Lancaster top order with relative ease.

Ian Dickinson then introduced Wihan Lubbe 3-9 and Ian Oakes into the attack, something which proved to be a bit of a masterstroke as Oakes picked up three wickets for no runs in his two overs, leaving Lancaster in dire straits as they were bowled out for 65 in 27 action packed overs.

Leyland v Morecambe - Fox Lane

Leyland now sit two points behind Barrow after picking up 15 points against Morecambe at Fox Lane.

Stand-in skipper Chris Parkinson won the toss and elected to bat and Leyland were soon in a spot of bother as Karl Cross 4 and Richardt Frenz 5 were soon back in the hutch thanks to some accurate bowling from Eddie Read 3-57 and Jono Gates 1-20.

This didn't faze Chris Parkinson 36 as he batted attentively and continued to keep Leyland afloat, he was eventually adjudged LBW to Daryn Smit 3-33 but some cautious batting from the Fox Lane lower order allowed Leyland to move to 165-9 from their allocation.

The Woodhill Lane outfit made a sturdy start as they rebuffed the Leyland attack, with a mixture of solid defence and flamboyance as Gareth Pedder hit 35 from 24 balls at the top of the order before being removed by Karl Cross 2-23.

Daryn Smit continued to bat vigilantly as he attempted to guide Morecambe to victory but he was unable to build any meaningful partnerships as wickets fell around him thanks to some precise bowling from Ross Bretherton 3-9 and Henry Thompson 4-26.

After he was removed by the latter for 39 the innings petered out and Morecambe were eventually all out for 122 in the 45th over.

Netherfield v Penrith - Parkside Road

Penrith provided the shock of the day as incoming professional Zakhele Qwabe made a scintillating debut for the Tynefield Park outfit after they made the short journey to face Netherfield at Parkside Road.

On winning the toss and electing to bat on a typically good Netherfield wicket Penrith didn't find life easy as both openers were removed early in the piece, however some watchful batting from Chris Marrow 24 and Michael Hay 39 allowed the Eden Valley side to keep the scoreboard moving.

The rate was upped when Paul Hindmarch 42 and Greg Hall 50 arrived at the crease and began to score runs with fluency ensuring that Penrith could post a not insignificant total of 207-7 from their 50 overs.

Any confidence that was held by Netherfield was soon extinguished as South African opening bowler Zakhele Qwabe scuttled the Parkside Road top order as he had Tom Williamson and Ben Barrow caught at the wicket before removing Ben Phillips for two leaving Netherfield in a perilous position at 12-3.

New Zealander Tom Bruce 3) batted with relative caution but he could not stem the flow of wickets as Qwabe removed John Huck and Brad Earl to collect five wickets on debut and leave the Netherfield response in tatters at 32-5.

After Paul Hindmarch 1-44 collected the crucial wicket of Bruce it was left to Greg Hall 4-16 to clean up the tail of his former club as the Kent Valley side were all out for 91 in the 30th Over.

Preston v Blackpool - West Cliff

Blackpool continued their unbeaten start to the season and consolidated their position in the upper table as they picked up fifteen points at West Cliff,

Although it was not a straightforward day for Paul Danson's team. On being invited to bat Preston soon made an impact as Afzal Kapadia picked up the wickets of Matthew Houston 3 and Daryl Mitchell for a duck, before Blackpool's top order began to build partnerships on what was a tough wicket for batting.

Wickets continued to fall as Kapadia worked his way to the tremendous figures of 7 for 46. Fortunately for the Stanley Park outfit Joshua Boyne 42no was able to marshal the tail and ensure that Blackpool posted a respectable total of 151 all out in the 42nd Over.

In reply, Preston were soon in a predicament as Daryl Mitchell 4-31 removed both openers before he, Andy Furniss 2-19 and Josh Boyne 2-21 removed the middle order leaving the West Cliff outfit in tatters.

The game was ended when Paul Danson and Ben Howarth combined to remove Kapadia leaving Preston 109 all out in the 40th over.

St Annes v Kendal - Vernon Road

After a couple of positive results in recent weeks St Annes woes returned as Kendal racked up the biggest first innings total of the day at Vernon Road.

South African Lesiba Ngoepe continued his good start to the season as he scored 89 before being removed by his opposite number Shadley Van Schalkwyk.

Initially the Vernon Road outfit had made a positive start as they removed both openers for little score but Ngoepe built partnerships with other members of the top order which allowed Kendal to score at a healthy rate.

The pick of the bowlers for the St Annes side was Mitch Bolus, he picked up 6 wickets for 58 runs as he scuttled the Kendal lower order to leave them 228-9 at the 50 over mark.

Kendal could not have asked for a better start to their defence as Adnan Ghaus 3-23 removed both openers for a combined total of one.

However, they did not have it all their own way as Nathan Armstrong 36 and Nanthesh Kiruparan 34 battled back to try and keep St Annes in the game, however after they fell to Wesley Fernando 2-16 and Ngoepe 3-35 respectively.

The impetus began to wane and the Vernon Road side were finally dismissed for 140 with 38 overs gone.

Division Two

Division 2 Round Up:

Kendal v St Annes - Shap Road

Kendal pulled of the shock of the afternoon in Division Two as they beat a strong St Annes side at Shap Road to claim their first victory of the season.

Ethan Ellwood 56 and Tom Aspinwall 42 were the mainstay of the Kendal batting as they posted a competitive score of 174 from their allocation.

St Annes were soon placed on the back foot as the attacking Geeth Malinda Kamburugamuwe and Alex Bradley were both removed cheaply.

Josh Taylor 32 offered some early resistance but wickets continued to fall as Marcus Hill 3-39 and Toby Tyson 4-37 bowled with accuracy.

Skipper Paul Wilks offered some cause for hope for St Annes as he batted with the lower order and in making 54 from 98 deliveries he put St Annes in with a shout of victory but it was not to be as he was removed by Marcus Hill and St Annes were all out for 158 in 42.2 overs.

It was business as usual for Blackpool and Chorley as they beat their opposition with ease on what was a fantastic day across the whole of the northwest.

Blackpool v Preston - Stanley Park

At a sun drenched Stanley Park, Blackpool were asked to bowl and they soon made headway as Chris Baines 2-15, Joel Watson 1-22 and Jake Muncaster 2-1 bowled with pace and accuracy to remove the Preston top order at a steady rate.

It was then the left arm spin paring of Matthew Siddall 3-0 and debutant Nathan Dixon 2-18 who cleaned up the lower order leaving Blackpool with a target of 85 for victory.

Sam Owen 38no was at his stoic best as he rebuffed some accurate early bowling from the Preston attack who collected three top order wickets but it was not enough as Owen saw his side home at the 24 over mark, giving his team its 6th win from 6 matches and cementing its place at the top of the Division Two table.

Chorley v Lancaster - Windsor Park

Chorley were also invited to bat at Windsor Park and they soon made good use of the wicket as each of the top three got starts without going on.

Fortunately for Alex Howarth, Jack Catterall did go on as he fell agonisingly short of a century as he hit 97 batting at number four as Chorley scored 219-5 from their allocated overs.

Lancaster's top order has struggled thus far this season and they were once more in trouble as the Chorley attack got into its stride with opening bowler Lewis Saunders picked up 3-18 from his eight overs.

Lancaster were eventually all out in the 24th over for 75 with the remainder of the Chorley attack sharing in the wickets.

Penrith v Netherfield - Tynefield Park

Netherfield also picked up maximum picked up maximum points as they continue to keep pace with Blackpool at the top of the table.

Penrith elected to bat and this looked to be a reasonable decision as Mark Osborne 22 and number four Bruce Glendinning 31 managed to keep the scoreboard moving in the right direction.

However, they hadn't counted on league stalwart Scott Clement who was at his miserly best with the ball as he removed both players before going on to pick up 6 for 17 from 9 overs, leaving Penrith 97 all out in the 30th Over.

Faced with such a meagre target Netherfield wasted little time as openers Craig Walmsley 21 and Matthew Atkinson put on 40 for the first wicket, Samuel Hall 2-22 had some success with the ball for Penrith as he removed both of the aforementioned batsmen but there was little cause for concern for the Parkside Road team as their top order guided them home in at the start of the 26th over.

Morecambe pulled off something of a triumph as they picked up a winning draw at Woodhill Lane against a much fancied Leyland side.

Batting first after winning the toss the Woodland Lane side made a reasonable start as both openers contributed, a change of bowling from Ian Farrington brought about two quick wickets as Ellis Robinson 1-28 removed Lewis Smith 37.

Morecambe v Leyland - Woodhill Lane

The Morecambe middle order all contributed with the bat but none could go on to make a telling contribution as Ian Farrington picked up four wickets for 48 runs leaving Morecambe 154-7 in the 45th over.

Leyland also made a steady start as Tom Reece made 44 at the top of the order, but wickets continued to fall around him as Lewis Smith 3-20 bowled tightly.

The Fox Lane side were in a spot of bother at one stage but a timely 40no from Alex Williams put them back in contention but alas it was not to be as Ellis Robinson was run out on the last delivery of the game to leave Leyland two runs short of their target.

Darwen v Barrow - Birch Hall

Darwen picked up their first victory of the season as they hosted Barrow at Birch Hall.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl they made an early breakthrough but Barrow then fought back as Peter Deeks 64 and Adam Hunter 27 started to accumulate runs.

However, after Hunter was removed by Greg Lawrenson 5-36 wickets started to fall in quick succession and the Cumbrian outfit were all out for 135 in the 41st over.

In reply the Birch Hall outfit were soon in bother as Sam Henderson 3-42 removed both openers early in the piece and wickets continued to fall but Gary Jackson was not for moving and he began to accumulate runs with confidence as he made his way to 71 not out and guided his team to victory in the 37th over.
