Match Day 14th May 2016

The Northern Cricket League Review for 14th May 2016

DIVISION ONE:

Barrow v Lancaster - Ernest Pass Memorial Ground

A resurgent Barrow put the Lune Road attack to the sword on a sweltering day at Ernest Pass as Kaustubh Pawar registered his second ton in as many weeks.

After winning the toss and electing to bat things could hardly have gone better for the Cumbrian side as the imperious Pawar racked up 125 at the top of the order as the Lancaster bowlers toiled.

There were timely contributions from Michael Wellings 32 and Greg Reynolds 32 as the middle order made good on the fine start from Pawar and took Barrow to 265-9.

There were wickets for Liam Moffat and Charlie Swarbrick as they both collected 3-80 on what was a tough afternoon.

Facing such a target, Lancaster were up against it as they lost Alex Metcalfe for 0, they soon recovered when Charlie Swarbrick 49 and Jamie Heywood 36 came together to give some stability to the chase.

However, this was as good as it got for Lancaster as Gary Collins 3-32 removed both Swarbrick and Heywood before Javed Khan polished off the tail picking up 4-44 to leave the Lancaster chase in tatters as they finished on 172 all out in the 47th over.

Chorley v Preston - Windsor Park

Wihan Lubbe made his maiden Northern League century as Chorley picked up a comfortable 15 points on home turf.

Preston made a good start with the ball as Andrew Starkie 4-60 picked up the wickets of Stuart Naden 5 and Andrew Holdsworth 2 early in the piece but things improved as Ian Dickinson 2 and Wihan Lubbe 129 came together to start rebuilding the innings, latterly, Lubbe was supported by a timely 40 from Jack Bentham as Chorley moved to 253-7 at the interval.

Having set such a total Chorley would have been confident in defending it and they soon made inroads as Keiran McCullagh 2-29 and Edwin Moulton 3-54 made short work of the West Cliff top order.

Lukman Vahaluwala offered the only resistance to a potent Chorley attack as he made 60 to take Preston to a respectable total of 174 all out in the 42nd over.

James Lee was the other bowler of note as he ran through the Preston lower order to collect 3-23 from 6 overs.

Darwen v St Annes - Birch Hall

Darwen's early season woes continued as the St Annes attack swept through their top order to leave the Birch Hall side 79 all out in the 35th over.

Darwen were reduced to 16-6 as the opening pairing of Matthew Grindley 4-23 and Shadley Van Schalkwyk 5-37 who picked up his maiden Northern League five wicket haul, ran through the top order.

Fortunately for the East Lancashire side Reece Davies 51no offered some resistance at number 7 as he scored his second Northern League Division one half century to give an element of respectability to the Darwen total.

The St Annes batsmen made relatively short work of the target as they moved to 84 -1 in the 24th over with Luke Wilks 27no and Shadley Van Schalkwyk 39no scoring the majority of the required runs to give the Vernon Road side their first victory of the season.

Kendal v Fleetwood - Shap Road

Travis Dean was in scintillating form as he hit an unbeaten 176 from 158 balls to break the Fleetwood batting record which was set by John Wright 158 in 2002.

The Victorian hit 16 fours and six sixes in an innings which also broke the record for the highest score at Shap Road.

The Broadwater outfit must have been mightily relieved that Dean scored as he did as only one other player made double figures owing to a fine spell from Adnan Ghaus who picked up 6-68 in 15 overs.

When the 9th wicket fell the scoreboard read 136-9, what followed was spectacular as Dean moved from 72 to 176 as he put on 120 for the tenth wicket with Kieran McGann 6no.

There was little chance to rest for Travis Dean as he opened the bowling and collected 2-19 from seven overs, picking up the crucial wicket of Chris Ngoepe 5 in the process.

Kendal were reduced to 21-4 but a partnership of 47 from Syed Ali 63 and Wesley Fernando 1) provide a brief glimmer of hope for the Cumbrian outfit, however when Ali was removed by Mike Clinning 2-26 Kendal were left needing a miracle which didn't materialise as the Broadwater attack made its way through the lower order to reduce Kendal to 166 all out in the 36th over.

Thanks to such a comprehensive victory Fleetwood now sit second behind Leyland in the league table.

Morecambe v Netherfield - Woodhill Lane

Netherfield took the lion's share of the points in a thrilling encounter as the scores finished level after 100 overs of cricket on a spectacular day at Woodhill Lane.

After winning the toss and electing to bat Netherfield were soon into their stride as Ben Barrow 21 and Nathan Dixon 25 got them off to a solid start, this paved the way for Ben Phillips who hit a magnificent 109 not out.

This was Phillips's second Division One century as he beat his previous best of 103 which came against Fleetwood in 2014, he was ably assisted by some lusty lower order hitting from John Huck 33 and Dan Ingham 35 as they steered the Parkside Road outfit to 259-7 from their allocation.

Cumberland CCC seamer Edward Read was the pick of the Morecambe attack as he picked up 5-102 from 16 overs.

What followed was remarkable as the Woodhill Lane batsmen fought tooth and nail to keep up with the required rate, it didn't get off to a good start for Morecambe as Mark Woodhead and Gareth Pedder were removed in quick succession.

But things rapidly improved when sub professional Daryn Smit and captain Josh Dixon came together to put on a not insignificant partnership for the third wicket. Smit hit 125 from 128 in an innings which contained 15 fours and 1 six, whilst Dixon hit 95 from 98 deliveries to put Morecambe in with a chance of victory.

Eight runs were required from the final over which was bowled by Dan Ingham, and it came down to Morecambe requiring a single from the final delivery but it was not to be as Dixon was ran out leaving the scores equal at the 50 over mark.

Penrith v Blackpool - Tynefield Park

Blackpool returned to form as they made short work of Penrith at Tynefield Park to collect 15 points and move to third in the Northern League Table.

Penrith won the toss and elected to bowl, this looked to be a good decision as the Blackpool openers were dismissed with only 14 runs on the board and things got even better as Richard Gleeson was removed by Paul Hindmarch to leave the Stanley Park outfit in a perilous position at 37-3.

Fortunately for the Fylde Coast side professional Daryl Mitchell 93 and Andrew Furniss 44 came together to put on 90 for the fourth wicket giving Blackpool some much needed stability, knocks of 19 from Paul Danson and Steve Mercer moved Blackpool to 212-9 at the 50 over mark.

Paul Hindmarch was the pick of the bowlers for the Eden Valley side as he collected 4-43 in 14 overs.

Penrith got off to reasonable start as they moved to 27 for no loss but the complexion of the game soon changed as Jamie Thomson 1-20 and Richard Gleeson 1-27 took wickets in quick succession,

Jonny Osborne 44 and Michael Hay 13 offered further resistance but when Hay and Osborne were removed by Joshua Boyne things soon deteriorated for Penrith as the young off spinner bowled with aplomb to collect 6-27 and his maiden Northern League five wicket haul in 7.5 accurate overs.

This left Penrith 119 all out in the 34th over and gave Blackpool their third victory of the season.

Division Two

Division 2 Round Up:

Blackpool remain flawless at the start of the season after racking up a considerable total on a typically flat wicket at Stanley Park.

On being asked to bat the Blackpool openers, Daniel Dixon 43 and Sam Owen 91 navigated the opening overs with panache and began to score runs with fluency as they put on 71 for the first wicket.

Ciaran Johnson 56 then joined Owen as they began to up the rate in putting on 119 for the 2nd Wicket. Owen fell agonisingly short of his maiden Northern League Century as he was caught in the last over.

Confronted with such stern target Penrith got off to a good start as Mark Osborne 19 and Joe Stamper 29 took on the Blackpool openers, however when Chris Baines 2-36 removed both of them the run rate started to drop as various Penrith batsmen made starts without going on to make a telling contribution.

Penrith were all out in the 37th over for 157 giving Blackpool 15 points and making it five wins from five at the start of the season for the Fylde Coast outfit.

Fleetwood made amends for last weekend's defeat to Chorley as they made short work of Kendal on a magnificent Spring afternoon at Broadwater.

Paul Willis and Wayne Clarke have been in fine early season form and there was no let up this weekend as they both made 72 in good time to give Fleetwood a fantastic foundation, both Declan Clerkin 53 and Andy Singleton 28 took advantage of the start with some lusty late innings hitting as Fleetwood moved to an imposing total of 254-5 from their allocation.

Given their early season form Kendal were faced with quite a task and this was made even more difficult as Tom Clarke 1-13 and Will Reader 2-22 removed the Kendal top three in the early overs.

Joe Dodds 20 and Alec Carradus 25 came together and added some stability to the Kendal innings but it was not to be for the Shap Road side as they were removed with the scoreboard showing Nelson (111) in the 43rd over.

Barrow picked up their first victory of the season as they posted a sizeable total of 219-6 at Lune Road.

After winning the toss and electing to bat the Cumbrian side made hay as the top order batsmen took a liking to the Lancaster attack. Guy Heffernan 48 and Robin Adams 39 made the scores of note but contributions from the remainder of the top order guided Barrow to 219-6 at the 45 over mark.

The Lune Valley side made a reasonable start as Lee Marshall 44 scored runs at the top of the order but his task was made all the more difficult as Sam Henderson 3-29 and Paul Riley 4-50 began to make their way through the Lancaster top order, the game was brought to a close when Ethan Markland was bowled by Riley to leave Lancaster 147 all out in the 44th over.

Both Netherfield and Chorley made short work of their opponents as they picked up 15 points against Morecambe and Preston respectively.

At Parkside Road, Scott Clement won the toss and had little hesitation in inserting Morecambe, this proved to be a good decision as the Cumbrian attack took wickets with regularity to reduce the Woodhill Lane outfit to 89 all out in the 35th over.

Skipper Clement was at his miserly best as he picked up 3 for 8 in 5.4 overs, whilst Joel Bibby collected 3 for 29 in ten overs.

Morecambe may have sensed a flicker of hope as they removed the dangerous Craig Walmsley early in the piece but the flicker was soon extinguished as Brendon Herron 35no and Liam Dugdale 32no guided Netherfield to 15 points in the 27th over.

In the Ribble Valley Alex Howarth also had little hesitation in electing to bowl first and he was vindicated as the Preston top three managed to last 7 balls between them, in the face of some accurate bowling from Chris Harty 3-26, Chorley's task would have been far simpler but for a timely half century from Amer Abbas Khan who hit 51 in 68 balls to take Preston past the hundred mark.

The Windsor Park batting line up has been in good form at the start of the season and they certainly didn't mess around on their way to 105-4 in 19 overs. Ian Oakes 16 and Max Harper 28 provided a solid start for Chorley before Joeseph Tiffin 9no and Nigel Eastham 25no marshalled Chorley to 15 points leaving them fourth in the table on 63 points behind Netherfield and Fleetwood on 65 points.

Darwen came excruciatingly close to their first victory of the season as they fought admirably to defend a total of 127 at Vernon Road.

Things could hardly have gone better for St Annes as they elected to bowl and removed Nathan Jackson almost immediately, however things got markedly more tough as the remainder of the Darwen top order dug in to grind out a respectable total.

St Annes managed to make short work of the lower order as Nathan Bend 3-42, Kevin Reid 2-17 and David Bartholomew 2-15 were amongst the wickets.

Any confidence that was held by the Vernon Road side soon dissipated as Andrew Cook 3-15 and Will Atkinson 3-40 worked their way through the top order, opportune contributions from David Bartholomew 17, Jake Higson 14 and Paul Wilks 30 moved St Annes to within sight of the winning line but it required a cool head from Max Livesey 7no to guide the Fylde coast side home with three balls to spare.
