Match Day 30th April 2016

The Northern Cricket League Review 30th 2016

DIVISION ONE:

Blackpool v Morecambe

Blackpool's professional Daryl Mitchell put in a consummate debut performance to crush reigning champions Morecambe at Stanley Park.

After winning the toss and electing to field Blackpool got off to a dream start as both openers were dismissed in a quick fashion. Morecambe sub-professional Ali Azmat held the innings together with an innings of 73 that contained five 4's and five 6's.

He found some support from the lower order but wickets fell continually as Mitchell got into his stride and collected 5 for 41 in a spell of 13.4 overs. Andrew Furniss and Jamie Thomson both chipped in with a brace of wickets apiece.

In a similar vain to Blackpool, Morecambe had a good start removing both Blackpool openers before they had chance to get going but that was to be the only success for the Woodhill Lane side as Mitchell 98no and Richard Gleeson 26no shared in an unbroken stand of 133 to see Blackpool home in the 33rd over.

Fleetwood v Darwen

Nothing could separate Fleetwood and Darwen after 91 overs of cricket at Broadwater, Patrick Ashton claimed the final wicket for Fleetwood in the 46th over as Chris Wade was caught by Alex Ryder to end the game as a tie.

Earlier Fleetwood had posted 137 thanks to 48 from Adam Parker and 29 from Travis Dean. The crucial wicket of Dean was taken by David Bowden 4-38 and this started the rot for Fleetwood as wickets continued to fall throughout their innings,

John Cordingley picked up 5-29 to give Darwen a reachable target.

The Birch Hall side started brightly in their chase as a number of the top order got starts, however Fleetwood led by Dean 4-26 did not give up and continued to pick up wickets with James Amor collecting 3-14 from a tidy 7 over spell.

Netherfield v Leyland

Netherfield's bowlers were made to toil in the early spring sunshine as Leyland racked up 289 from their allocation of 50 0vers.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl the Parkside Road attack were put to the sword by a powerful Leyland top order, Chris Parkinson (46) and Karl Cross (57) got the Fox Lane outfit off to a good start putting on 76 for the first wicket.

Henry Thompson 82 and Nathan McDonnell 65 picked up where Cross left off scoring runs with alacrity as they put on 130 for the third wicket. Andrew Makinson then chipped in with 24 from 10 deliveries to push Leyland up to a mammoth total of 289, something which is made all the more remarkable as it was achieved without the services of an overseas player.

Facing such a task Netherfield's batsmen were resolute in defence from the outset and made the Leyland attack work hard for its reward. Will Jacques 4-49 picked up two early wickets, including that of Netherfield professional Tom Bruce who failed to trouble the scorers.

This put Leyland in the hunt but a captain's knock of 50 from Ben Barrow combined with an experienced middle order of Phillips (31) and Huck (23) ensured that Netherfield retained composure as they moved to 180-8 at the close of play.

Penrith v Chorley

Penrith held on for their second draw in as many games as Chorley's attack could not force its way through a strong Penrith batting line up.

Having won the toss and inserted the Windsor Park outfit, things could hardly have been better as Stuart Naden (2) was caught at the wicket off the bowling of Hindmarch, this brought Dickinson (29) to the crease who combined with Holdsworth (24) to give Chorley some stability.

Chorley's professional Wihan Lubbe 51 then added 92 for the fourth wicket with Will Moulton 51 and a few lusty blows from Keiran McCullagh 23 saw Chorley to a total of 223.

Again Penrith's top order were solid with Nicky Burns 41, Jon Osborne 36 and Michael Hay 61 all scoring runs fluently.

At 152-4 Penrith were certainly in with a sniff of victory but Lubbe had other ideas as he collected three cheap wickets to put Penrith on the back foot. They were made to settle for the draw as Angus McNeill and Will Tyson batted out to see Penrith to 171-8 at the 50 over mark.

Preston v Barrow

Barrow shunned the daemons of the opening day to make short work of Preston at West Cliff.

Preston batted first and made good headway as Sajid Patel 31 combined with Lukman Vahaluwala 23 to give Preston a solid foundation, unfortunately the middle order could not reciprocate as many of the batsmen made starts but failed to go on to a big score.

Daryl Wearing 4-33, Gary Collins 2-42, Amjad Khan 2-28 and Ryan Gilmour (2-11) all took wickets at regular intervals to stop the Preston batsmen from gaining any momentum and the West Cliff side were bowled out for 129 in the 44th Over.

In a similar fashion many of Barrow's batsmen made starts before losing their wickets, although no batsman really stuck their head above the parapet Barrow made good progress and they knocked off Preston's total in 33 overs, they were guided over the line by a timely 28no from Amjad Khan to give them their first points of the season.

St Annes v Lancaster

St Annes were given a rude awakening as Lancaster topped a superlative performance by knocking off a total of 136 in the 36th over for no loss.

St Annes were asked to bat at Vernon Road and they were immediately placed on the back foot as Iain Perrieman 5-26 and Liam Moffat 4-45 scythed through the top order to leave the Vernon Road outfit in a perilous position.

Thomas Bradley (56) and Mitchell Bolus (41) recovered the innings well for St Annes which allowed them to post a total of 136.

What followed was a terrific batting performance from the Lancaster openers Jamie Heywood 77no and Alex Metcalfe 59no as they batted without cause for concern to see Lancaster to 15 points and their second victory in as many weeks.

Division Two

Division 2 Round Up:

There were a number of comprehensive victories in Saturday's Division Two fixtures,

The most stunning of which came at The Stanning Memorial Ground as Leyland were annihilated by Netherfield, as they were skittled for 66 chasing an above par total of 142 which was posted by the Parkside Road outfit on a tough wicket.

Craig Walmsley was the pick of the batsmen as he scored 64 in a patient innings which allowed Netherfield to build a foundation from which they could attack, when Walmsley's wicket fell the score had reached 80 but some good lower order batting allowed Netherfield to move to 142 all out.

Michael Birchall had a tremendous day with the ball as he picked up 6 wickets for 32 runs in 12 overs.

Seemingly Leyland were in little trouble as they moved to 28 for 0 in the fifth over but the floodgates opened as Tennant (8) was run out, a collapse ensued as the experienced Netherfield attack vanquished Leyland's batsmen to leave them 66 all out in the 34th over.

The magnitude of this victory is made a little greater as it was only Leyland's second home defeat since 2009.

Blackpool were in a treacherous position at Woodhill Lane as number eight Joel Watson walked to the crease to join Daniel Pile with the scoreboard displaying 18-6 as Morecambe's attack got off to a dream start>

What followed was a tremendous fightback from the youthful Blackpool lower order as Watson recorded his highest Northern League score of 45 and Pile hit 57 to register his maiden Northern League half century and to guide Blackpool to a competitive total of 130.

The Woodhill Lane side started with composure but when captain Sam Owen 5-11 entered the attack things rapidly changed, and after he collected three wickets in an over the game had a much changed complexion and Blackpool ran out winners in the 41st over as they bowled Morecambe out for 98.

St Annes got off to a good start against Lancaster as they posted 199 for 7 in 42 overs, the Vernon Road side were helped to a commanding total by a fantastic knock of 80 from Geeth Malinda

Malinda was assisted by knocks of 23 and 27 from David's Watson and Bartholomew respectively.

Lancaster were then routed for 74 in 23 overs thanks to 4 for 32 from Max Livesey and 3 for 12 from Andy Drake.

Preston recorded an emphatic victory on the Walney Peninsula as they bowled Barrow out for 73 in 24.2 overs after posting a score of 160-4 in their allocated overs.

Mohsin Patel 59 and Andrew Starkie 50 got Preston off to a good start and some lusty lower order hitting from Mohammed Ilyas 29 pushed them to a decent total of 160.

The side from the Ribble Valley then made short work of Barrow as Hamza Ahmed 3-29 and Omer Sabir 4-9 took wickets at regular intervals, the only Barrow batsmen to offer any resistance to a well-oiled Preston attack was Adam Hunter who scored 32.

Fleetwood continued from where they left off as they bowled Darwen out for 104 at Birch Hall, Will Reader was the pick of the bowlers as he collected four for 18 from 8 tidy overs.

The Broadwater side then knocked off the total with little trouble as James Gregson hit an unbeaten 53 to guide Fleetwood home in the 35th over.

Chorley beat Penrith at Windsor Park as Ian Oakes hit a timely 66 to allow Chorley to knock off a respectable total of 139 which was earlier posted by Penrith.

There were no real innings of note as a number of Penrith batsmen chipped in with scores in the teens and twenty's to enable the Eden Valley side to post 139.

Chorley's innings was very similar but the knock of 66 from Oakes held the innings together for the Windsor Park side allowing them to win in the 31st over.

Oakes was assisted by knocks of 28 from Max Harper and 22 from skipper Alex Howarth.
