Match Day 6th August 2016

The Northern Cricket League Review for 6th August 2016

DIVISION ONE:

Blackpool v Penrith - Stanley Park

Blackpool's reign at the top of the Northern League continued as they picked up a resounding victory over Penrith at Stanley Park.

Batting first on a track which had seen Kia Super League action on the afternoon previous, the Stanley Park outfit began well with openers Matthew Houston 43 and Ciaran Johnson 45 scoring runs with ease on a track which offered little assistance to the Penrith attack.

With such a foundation in place Daryl Mitchell was well positioned to take advantage of such a wicket and he did just that as he scored his second century of the season, making a breezy 106 not out in an unbroken partnership of 139 with Andrew Furniss who made 57 not out as the pair guided Blackpool to a mammoth total 272-3 at the 50 over mark.

In defence of their total Blackpool wasted little time as a returning Richard Gleeson 4-32 and Chris Baines 1-22 made good use of the new ball, taking the heart out of the Penrith batting line up as none of the top five could make a telling contribution in the face of an accurate opening gambit from the Blackpool pair.

Jonathon Osborne 23* and Zakhele Qwabe 21 then formed a partnership of 33 in an otherwise barren card as they gave an element of respectability to the Penrith response.

However, this proved in vain as off spinner Josh Boyne continued his good form in collecting 4-22 to clean up the Penrith lower order and reduce the Eden Valley outfit to 97 all out and give Blackpool fifteen points, retaining their 18-point advantage at the top of the league.

Fleetwood v Kendal- Broadwater

Fleetwood became outright occupiers of second position in the league as they claimed a straightforward victory over Kendal at Broadwater.

After electing to bowl Matt Clark's side made good progress as they removed both Kendal openers cheaply,

Ben Phillips 11 and Syed Ali 11 then steadied the ship but progress was limited as both fell to Travis Dean 2-27 and Adam Parker 2-26 respectively.

Wesley Fernando then entered the piece and he made steady progress with the bat as he built small partnerships with Darren Nightingale 27 and Adnan Ghaus 20 to get the scoreboard moving in the right direction.

Fernando ended the pick of the batsman as he made a commendable 71 before he was removed by Mike Clinning 3-1, as the Shap Road outfit ended 161 all out in the 43rd over.

In response Fleetwood were initially placed on the back foot as Travis Dean was removed for just two by Chris Miller 3-54 but things improved as Adam Parker 36 and Dean Bell 23 calmed any nerves.

This was followed by contributions from Wayne Clarke 18 and Patrick Ashton 33 but all fell before they could make a major impact on the game.

Fortunately Mike Clinning 12no and Mat Clark 4no were on hand to guide Fleetwood home to a three wicket victory in the 44th over.

Lancaster v Barrow - Lune Road

Netherfield v Morecambe - Parkside Road

Netherfield put in a superb performance to beat Morecambe by 100 runs at Parkside Road as they made the Woodhill Lane attack toil in the fine conditions which prevailed on Saturday afternoon.

Batting first the Cumbrian side made a shaky start as they were reduced to 31-2 by the Morecambe opening pair, although, any wobbles soon subsided as Brad Earl 37 and Tom Bruce added 93 for the third wicket.

Bruce was joined by John Huck 63 who wasted little time in a typically bullish innings as he supported Bruce in a partnership of 116.

Bruce was the mainstay of the card as he blitzed his way to 118 from just 89 balls in an innings which included nine boundary fours and six sixes to propel the Parkside Road outfit to 288-5 at the 50 over mark and claim his second century of the season.

The chase was always certain to be an uphill task for the Woodhill Lane side but they made a good fist of it as Josh Dixon 63 and Gareth Pedder 15 started watchfully to get them off to a good start but a cool wind of change arrived when the change bowlers were introduced into the attack.

Lewis Richardson 1-14 removed Pedder before Marc Hadwin 3-60 claimed the key wicket of Saeed Anwar Jnr.

Some resistance followed from the Morecambe top order but they struggled to keep up with the rate as Dixon fell to Bruce 2-42 and Hadwin turned the screw further removing both Lewis Edge 22 and Ryan Pearson 40.

Complete capitulation then followed as the lower order folded to leave Morecambe 188 all out in the 46th over.

Preston v Chorley - West Cliff

Chorley maintained the gap between themselves and Kendal as they picked up a comprehensive victory over Preston at West Cliff.

Bowling first the Windsor Park outfit were rebuffed for a short period as Sajid Patel 18 and Lukman Vahaluwala 10 kept the new ball at bay.

However, the patience of the Windsor Park outfit soon payed off as both were removed, this brought further success as Ian Oakes 4-32 accounted for two further Preston batsmen before Mustafa Durrani 50 and Miya Lunat 29 brought some stability to the innings.

The pair made comfortable progress but were unable to score at any great rate as the Chorley attack bowled with accuracy, eventually the same fate befell them as both were removed by Oakes before Joe Barker 2-10 cleaned up the tail to leave Preston 140 all out in the 50th over.

In response to the target Chorley made good progress as their top order batted with diligence in the face of some precise bowling from the Preston attack.

Stuart Naden 24 and Ian Dickinson 38no got things moving before Nekoli Parris 23 and Ed Moulton 31no built upon their good work to see Chorley to an eight wicket victory in the 42nd over.

St Annes v Darwen - Vernon Road

Darwen's winning streak was brought to a shuddering halt as St Annes put in a consummate all round performance to pick up a four wicket victory over the East Lancashire side at Vernon Road.

After losing the toss Darwen were asked to bat and it proved to be a wise decision from Matt Grindley 3-40 as he and the St Annes professional, Shadley Van Schalkwyk made a mockery of the Birch Hall top order with the top four falling for a combined total of nine runs.

Mark Friend 43 and Reece Davies 24 then brought some resistance to the fore but it proved unsustainable as Friend was adjudged LBW to Grindley, this prompted a return to the attack for the South African paceman and he was rewarded with two further wickets in claiming 6-30 to reduce Darwen to 102 all out in the 35th over.

In defence of their total Darwen made a positive start as they claimed wickets with some regularity but scores of 25 from Gurman Bains and 26 from Tom Higson put any miracle out of reach for the Birch Hall outfit before three quick wickets from Chris Wade 3-25 made things interesting.

Fortunately Henry Higson 13no and Mitch Bolus 6no were on hand to see St Annes across the line as they finished 106-6 in the 32nd over.
