Match Day 23rd July 2016

The Northern Cricket League Review for 23rd July 2016

DIVISION ONE:

Blackpool v Chorley - Stanley Park

Blackpool's reign at the top of the table continues after the Fylde Coast outfit picked up a comfortable 15 points against Chorley at Stanley Park.

Having elected to bat the Windsor Park outfit then made steady progress as they moved to 34 for no loss with Stuart Naden 24 and Andrew Holdsworth 12 punishing any wayward deliveries from the Blackpool attack.

Naden was then removed by Blackpool professional Daryl Mitchell, this sparked something of a collapse as Chorley slumped to 38-6 with numbers three to six failing to trouble the scorers as Mitchell 5-29 and off spinner Josh Boyne 2-41 turned the screw.

Edwin Moulton 48no and Joseph Tiffin 28 then began to recover the innings as they added 52 for the 7th wicket before Tiffin fell to Stephen Twist 3-13.

Chorley were eventually dismissed for 131 in the 40th over as Mitchell removed Chris Harty to claim his second five wicket haul of the season.

In response Blackpool also began watchfully before Stuart Naden 2-38 removed both openers and Daryl Mitchell 7 was run out to leave the Stanley Park outfit in hot water at 38-3.

Fortunately Tom Jefferson and Stephen Twist 24 were on hand to steady the ship and they added 46 for the fourth wicket before Twist was dismissed by Kieran McCullagh 1-58.

Following the dismissal of Andrew Furniss, Joshua Boyne 20 joined Jefferson 50no and the pair got Blackpool within sniffing distance of victory before Jefferson hit a four to take the score to 134-6 in the 41st over and claim an unbeaten half century, the resulting victory leaves Blackpool 22 points clear at the top of Division one.

Fleetwood v Morecambe - Broadwater

Fleetwood made amends for their defeat to Darwen as they claimed 15 points in a resounding victory over Morecambe at Broadwater.

Morecambe elected to bat first and they were soon bother as James Amor 2-15 removed both Laurence Read 0 and Lewis Edge 8.

Wickets then continued to fall with regularity as Patrick Ashton was introduced into the attack and the Australian leg spinner taking full advantage of the conditions as he claimed 7-63 in 16.4 overs.

The only Morecambe batsmen to offer any real resistance to the Fleetwood attack was skipper Josh Dixon who hit 57 at the top of the order to help the Woodhill Lane outfit to a respectable score of 146 all out in the 47th over.

In defence of their total Morecambe got off to the best possible start as Edward Read removed the prolific Travis Dean before he had chance to trouble the scorers.

Unfortunately this was as good as it got for Morecambe as Adam Parker 75no and Dean Bell 71no both batted with great skill and determination to add 149 for the 2nd wicket and claim a victory for Fleetwood inside the 22 over mark. This leaves Fleetwood on 152 points, 22 behind Blackpool and level with Leyland.

Netherfield v Barrow - Parkside Road

Barrow maintained pace with Fleetwood and Leyland as they made put in fine all round performance to claim 15 points at Parkside Road.

On winning the toss, Ben Barrow elected to bat and his side were soon in trouble as Javed Khan 4-24 removed Brendon Herron for 3 to leave the Parkside Road outfit at 11-1.

Ben Barrow 23 and James Park-Johnson then began to rebuild but the efforts were soon found wanting as Gary Collins 2-34 entered the attack and removed Barrow, before claiming the crucial wicket of Tom Bruce as the New Zealander failed to trouble the scorers for the second week running.

John Huck 26 and Dan Ingham 23 each made reasonable partnerships with Park-Johnson as the youngster went on to record his maiden Division One half century, hitting 57 from 114 balls before being bowled by Javed Khan.

The Netherfield lower order then chipped in with contributions as they helped the Cumbrian side to 161 all out at the 50 over mark.

In response Barrow made an attentive start as Kaustubh Pawar 13 and Toby Mowat got the chase into motion, any momentum that had been gathered was then given a brief check as the Indian was caught at the wicket off the bowling of Dan Ingham 1-24.

Mowat and Sam Dutton then added 27 for the second wicket before the Cumberland CCC batsman was removed by Liam Dugdale 1-18.

This brought Greg Reynolds to the crease and he found conditions to his liking as he added an unbeaten 109 for the third wicket with Toby Mowat as the Barrow skipper hit 78 not out and the aforementioned Reynolds hit 54 in 70 balls to see the Ernest Pass outfit home in 38 overs, leaving them in fourth place on 150 points, two points shy of Fleetwood and Leyland.

Penrith v Kendal - Tynefield Park

It proved to be a chastening day for bowlers on both sides as over 550 runs were scored at Tynefield Park as Penrith and Kendal both took advantage of a placid pitch in the Eden Valley.

Batting first the Tynefield Park outfit soon got into their stride as Greg Hall 22 and Chris Marrow added 55 for the first wicket.

Hall was then removed by Wesley Fernando 1-19 in what proved to be Kendals only success of the day with the ball.

What followed was a batting masterclass par excellence as Marrow and Michael Hay added an unbeaten 241 for the second wicket as they put the Shap Road attack to the sword, notably this partnership becomes the fourth highest in the Division One list, eclipsing an unbeaten partnership of 239 by Hanif Mohammad and Gordon.F Edmundson for Blackpool in 1960.

Both Penrith batsmen went on to claim unbeaten maiden Division One centuries as Marrow hit 123no from 177 balls and Hay hit 131no from 98 balls in an innings which included 7 boundary fours and 9 sixes, the combined efforts of the pair left Penrith with a mammoth total of 296-1 at the 50 over mark, the 6th highest innings total recorded in Division one.

With such an obstacle to overcome, Kendal may have been forgiven for feeling a hint of trepidation, however, the Shap Road side didn't let this show as they advanced to 79 for no loss as Paul Dodds 30 and Syed Ali made admirable progress early on.

Dodds was eventually removed by Michael Hay but this didn't end Kendals interest as Ali and Ben Phillips 61 added 122 for the second wicket to see the Shap Road side to 201-2 before Phillips was removed by Greg Hall 4-56.

Ali also fell to Hall but not before he had chance to claim his maiden Division One century with the opener hitting 110 from 121 balls to put Kendal in with a shout.

With wickets now falling with alarming regularity the asking rate became too much for Kendal and they were left 269-7 at the 50 over mark as the run fest ended in the balmy evening conditions at Tynefield Park.

Preston v Darwen - West Cliff

For Darwen it is now two wins from two as the East Lancashire side claimed their second victory of the season at West Cliff.

Sajid Patel won the toss and elected to bat on what looked a good wicket for batting and Preston were soon into their stride as Patel 47 combined with a number of the top order to get the scoreboard moving.

Unfortunately, none of the top order could go on to higher honours with only Lukman Vahaluwala making 37 before the inevitable collapse occurred with David Bowden 4-42 applying pressure with his left arm spin.

With the help of 25 from Rizwan Ali Preston eventually moved to 151 all out at the 45 over mark.

In response Darwen made comfortable progress as Ammer Mirza 42 and Scott Jackson 37 marshalled the chase in the early phase of the Birch Hall reply.

After both were removed, John Cordingley 26 and Mark Friend 29no were on hand to see Darwen home in the 44th over as the East Lancashire side reached 153-4 to claim victory by six wickets.

St Annes v Leyland - Vernon Road

St Annes produced the shock of the afternoon as the Fylde Coast outfit condemned Leyland to only their second loss of the season as they put in a consummate performance at Vernon Road.

On winning the toss David Makinson elected to bat on what turned out to be a turbulent afternoon for the Fox Lane outfit as their top order were annihilated thanks to some tremendous bowling from Matthew Grindley and Shadley Van Schalkwyk.

The only batsmen to offer any form of resistance to the pair of seamers were Andrew Makinson 18 and Ross Bretherton 24 as Leyland were reduced to 85 all out in 35.5 overs with Grindley claiming 4-44 from 17 overs and Van Schalkwyk 5-31 from 13 overs.

In response St Annes were also placed on the back foot as Karl Cross removed Luke Wilks for nought, however, any early issues were soon nullified as Gurman Bains 35 and De Wet Swart 25 guided the Vernon Road side to the victory target at quite a rate.

It was left to Shadley Van Schalkwyk 17no and Richard Staines 4no to complete the task as St Annes claimed victory and 15 points.

Division Two

Division 2 Round Up:

Barrow v Netherfield

Meanwhile, on the Furness Peninsula, Netherfield were asked to bat first and they made steady but not unhindered progress as Craig Walmsley 30 got the scoreboard moving whilst a number of wickets fell around him thanks to the skills of Paul Riley 4-39 with the new ball.

Isaac Medhurst 50no was then on hand as he hit his maiden Division Two half century to guide the Parkside Road outfit to 152-7 at the close of the first innings.

In response the Barrow innings didn't really get out of the starting blocks as the first four batsmen were adjudged LBW as Stuart Nixon 2-13 and Isaac Medhurst 2-27 bowled with unwavering accuracy to make life tough for the Barrow batsmen,

The only player to offer any real fight was Robin Adams who made an unbeaten 34 as those around him fell to the spin of Michael Curran who claimed 5-20 in 9.4 overs to see Netherfield to a 65 run victory.

Netherfield now sit 22 points behind Blackpool and two points behind Leyland who sit in second.

Chorley v Blackpool

Blackpool retained their 20-point advantage as they came out on top of a game which ebbed and flowed at Windsor Park.

Bowling first the Stanley Park attack were soon into their stride as Jamie Thomson 3-18, Joel Watson 2-18 and Jake Muncaster 4-18 bowled with accuracy and a hint of movement to reduce Chorley to 22-6.

However, the evergreen Roland Horridge 50no had other ideas as he occupied the crease with the assistance of Michael Critchley 7 and James Lee 32 to guide Chorley to 120-9 at the 45 over mark.

In response Blackpool were made to work hard for their runs as the Windsor Park attack bowled with precision to limit scoring opportunities, watchful knocks of 42 from Dan Barling and 23 from Sam Owen got Blackpool within site of the target and the job was concluded by the middle order as Blackpool claimed a six wicket victory in the 39th over.

Darwen v Preston

At Birch Hall, Darwen were asked to bat first and they made slow progress on a tough wicket for batting, wickets fell with regularity as the Preston attack took advantage of the aforementioned conditions with Mustaq Tailor the pick of the bowlers as he claimed 5-26 from twelve overs.

However, this didn't prevent Ben Hall 25, Darius Ainslie 22 and Gary Jackson 21 chipping in with crucial knocks to see Darwen to 127-9 at the 45 over mark.

If Darwen had any qualms about defending such a total they didn't show as Andrew Cook tore through the Preston top order to claim 6-15 before Greg Lawrenson cleaned up the tail as the spinner claimed 3-0 from his five overs leaving the West Cliff side 23 all out in 21 overs.

Kendal v Penrith

In the other fixtures of the day Kendal sprung something of a surprise as they chased a target of 153 to claim a comfortable six wicket victory at Shap Road.

After inserting Penrith, the Shap Road side were soon into their work, led by Marcus Hill, they reduced the Eden Valley outfit to 36-7 as Hill claimed the first seven wickets in an impressive spell of 7-36 from 12 overs.

Although they were in significant trouble the Penrith lower order didn't give up and their tenacity was rewarded as Dan Morland hit an unbeaten 72 with assistance from Keelan Spurrell 25 and Jamie Parker 19 as the tail wagged to rebuff the Kendal attack and see Penrith to the relative safety of 153 all out at the 42 over mark.

Penrith also claimed an early breakthrough as they reduced Kendal to 8 -1 but success with the ball proved elusive from then on in as Ryan 45 and Darren Nightingale 88 combined to add 119 for the second wicket.

This got Kendal into the home straight as a timely boundary from Shane Hyland 4no finished the job as the Kent Valley side romped to a 6 wicket victory in the 28th over.

Leyland v St Annes

For second placed Leyland it proved to be a comfortable victory at Fortress Fox Lane as they made it back to back victories over St Annes.

The Leyland attack was soon into its work as they removed the prolific Geeth Malinda for just 13 before a fiery opening spell from Ian Farrington 4-28 and precision from left-arm spinner Michael Birchall 4-16 decimated the Vernon Road top order to leave their innings in tatters.

Alex Bradley 42 and Andy Drake 27 were the only batsmen to offer any real resistance as St Annes finished 108-9 at the 45 over mark.

In an interesting twist Leyland then found themselves on the wrong end of the opening bowlers at Richard Thomas 2-17 removed Tom Reece for nought and Dale Vardy for four.

However, Hamza Khan 41no and Jake Peake 56 were on hand to navigate the Fox Lane side to the winning post as they reached 111-3 in the 26th over.

Morecambe v Fleetwood

Morecambe hosted Fleetwood at Woodhill Lane and it proved to be a successful day for the home side as they successfully chased a target of 175 which was earlier set by the Broadwater outfit.

Batting first Fleetwood made steady progress as Paul Willis 33 combined with the top order to see Fleetwood to 41-1, after his dismissal by Andy Bird 3-27 a small collapse ensued as the Fylde Coast side fell to 54-4.

Fortunately, Luke 36 and Jack Wilkinson 37no were on hand to steady the ship as they marshalled the tail to see Fleetwood to 175 at the 45 over mark.

After their chase had started with an early wicket the Woodhill Lane side soon found their rhythm as Matthew Derham 85, Michael Fisher 24 and Sean Graves 36no made steady progress with the bat to see Morecambe to a seven wicket victory in the 41st over.
