Match Day 18th June 2016

The Northern Cricket League Review for 18th June 2016

DIVISION ONE:

Blackpool v Lancaster - Stanley Park

Blackpool took the major share of the points as they picked up a winning draw against Lancaster at Stanley Park.

After winning the toss and electing to bat things did not get off to an ideal start as opener Matthew Houston was removed by Ben Simm 2-55 early in the piece, Ciaran Johnson 33 and Daryl Mitchell then set about building the innings as they put on 67 for the 2nd wicket before the former was caught at the wicket off the bowling of Lancaster professional Abhimanyu Khod.

At 95-3 Daryl Mitchell was joined by Stephen Twist 58 and they added 102 for the 4th wicket in good time as Blackpool made their way toward 200.

After the dangerous Twist was removed by Liam Moffat 2-79 Mitchell brought up his maiden Northern League century before he was also removed by Moffat on 105.

The Blackpool middle order then chipped in with some handy runs as the Stanley Park outfit moved to 241-6 from their allocation.

In a similar vein to Blackpool, Lancaster also lost an early wicket as Jamie Heywood was removed by Andy Furniss 1-25 before Alex Metcalfe 29 and Abhimanyu Khod 29 began to rebuild the chase and added 49 for the second wicket.

Both were then removed in with haste as Daniel Pile 4-45 and Josh Boyne 2-38 turned the screw. At 83-5 the Lune Road outfits chances of winning had diminished significantly and accordingly the middle and lower order began to shut up shop as Rajat Agarwal 41 and Danny Welbourne 22 batted stoically to prevent further damage.

However, wickets did continue to fall and Blackpool had a chance of victory but a number of dropped catches provided Lancaster with a lifeline on an otherwise docile wicket and their innings ended as they reached 182-9 at the 50 over mark.

Chorley v Darwen - Windsor Park

Chorley were held to a draw as their Birch Hall opposition fought valiantly to stave off the attentions of the Chorley bowlers at Windsor Park.

A Chorley side which had said goodbye to professional Wihan Lubbe won the toss and elected to bat, a decision which was rewarded as Stuart Naden 63 began well with willow in hand.

Unfortunately there was little in the way of support from the remainder of the top order as they struggled against some accurate bowling from the Darwen attack.

Things got even better for Darwen as John Cordingley 3-36 came into the attack and picked up two quick wickets, fortunately for the Windsor Park outfit Jack Bentham 34no and Kieran McCullagh 28 had the wherewithal to bat out the remaining overs and manged to get them to a reasonable total of 185-9 from their allocation.

Darwen have had their woes this season and things looked to be heading a familiar way as Ammer Mirza was removed by the second delivery of their innings.

However their prospects began to brighten as Dave Bowden 75, John Cordingley 29 and Shrikant Wagh 26 battled to restore some pride.

Alas it was not to be for Darwen as Ian Oakes 4-23 and Daryn Smit 2-51 began to apply pressure and picked up wickets at regular intervals and it was left to John and Sam Painter to see off the Chorley attack as Darwen finished 169-9 from their 50 overs.

Fleetwood v St Annes - Broadwater

Fleetwood took the spoils in the Fylde Coast derby as they defended a meagre total of 138 to keep themselves in the hunt at the top of the Northern League.

Batting first Fleetwood were indebted to a watchful innings from Wayne Clarke as the opener made 54 from 105 balls.

Those around him found life a little tougher but meaningful contributions from the whole of the Broadwater top order ensured that Fleetwood batted for 50 overs and that they had a total to defend as they posted 138-5 at the 50 over mark.

After a victory last weekend, St Annes would have been confident in chasing such a total but things didn't start well as Travis Dean 5-47 removed Luke Wilks in quick fashion.

This brought Nathan Armstrong to the crease and he added 64 for the 2nd wicket with Gurman Bains as he hit a quick fire 51 from 53 deliveries before being ran out, as Van Schalkwyk 3) entered fray things were looking good for St Annes as they moved to 124-5 with 18 overs remaining.

It then took a turn for the worse as the Vernon Road professional was removed for 34 by Dean, thus allowing Patrick Ashton 4-41 to work his magic as he removed numbers 8, 9 and 11 for 0 leaving St Annes high and dry as they were bowled out for 133 in the 37th over.

Kendal v Barrow - Shap Road

Barrow won the battle of the Cumbrian sides as they kept themselves in contention by picking up a five wicket victory at Shap Road.

Kendal won the toss and elected to bat and they were soon under the cosh as their top three were removed with 4 runs between them thanks to some accurate early bowling from Javed Khan 3-22 and Daryl Wearing 3-45.

Darren Braithwaite 40no batted vigilantly as he fought to keep the Ernest Pass attack at bay in an innings that lasted 133 balls but his patience could not be matched by his peers as Gary Collins 3-22 made short work of the lower order leaving Kendal 99 all out in the 48th over.

In defence of such a small total Kendal made a good start as Syed Ali 2-17 removed both openers quickly and after Toby Tyson 1-19 removed Dean Williams for 5 anything was possible, but Sam Dutton 34 and Michael Wellings 31no fought back to keep Barrow in the game and it was Wellings that got them across the line as he hit the last ball of the 19th over for six to give Barrow 15 points, therefore allowing them to retain third position in the league table.

Penrith v Leyland - Tynefield Park

Over 500 runs were scored on a fine day in the Eden Valley as Leyland took the lion's share of the points in a run-fest at Tynefield Park.

On winning the toss David Makinson had little hesitation in batting and his decision was rewarded as Karl Cross 30 and Chris Parkinson 74 got Leyland off to an ideal start.

This was complimented by 55 from Richardt Frenz and 29 from Henry Thompson before the fireworks began as Nathan McDonnell arrived at the crease and deposited balls to all quarters in hitting 74 from 48 deliveries.

It is likely that Leyland would have made 300 had the latter not been removed by Paul Hindmarch who was the only bowler to have any real impact as he collected 4-76 from 14 overs.

Facing such a stern test of their mettle Penrith were soon into their stride as Chris Marrow 69 and Greg Hall picked up runs with relative ease to keep the Cumbrian side in contention.

Leyland's first success came as Marrow was removed by Nathan McDonnell and this started the ball rolling for the Fox Lane outfit as Michael Hay was removed soon after.

Hall received further support from Paul Hindmarch 25 and Jon Osborne 22 before he went on to pass the hundred mark in making a fine 110 from 108 deliveries.

In the midst of this success Nathan McDonnell was also in the limelight as he collected a hat-trick and six for 71 as Leyland pushed for victory but it was not to be as Zakhele Qwabe and Tony Threlkeld held on until the 50 over mark with Penrith having made 254-7 to leave Leyland with a winning draw which keeps them 9 points ahead at the top of the league table.

Preston v Netherfield - West Cliff

Preston produced the shock of the afternoon as they vanquished Netherfield at West Cliff to pick up their third victory of the season, thanks in part to superb all round performance from Lukman Vahaluwala.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl Preston were thwarted by a reasonable partnership from the Netherfield openers but the floodgates opened when Brad Earl 19 was removed by Rizwan Ali 1-17.

Things got rapidly better for Preston as Lukman Vahaluwala scythed through the Netherfield top order as he picked up the crucial wickets of Ben Phillips, Tom Bruce and John Huck in picking up six for 40 from 13.2 overs.

The only Parkside Road batsmen to offer any resistance was captain Ben Barrow who fought courageously as he made 51 at the top of the order before being removed by Afzal Kapadia 3-14 as Netherfield were reduced to 106 all out in the 45th over.

In response the West Cliff outfit did not get off to a good start as Sajid Patel and Yasin Patel were both removed by Dan Ingham 2-22 but fortunately for the side from the Ribble Valley, Lukman Vahaluwala stuck around and with the assistance of Mustafa Durrani 11 and Irshad Desai 16 he got Preston over the winning line as he finished 70 not out with the scoreboard reading 107-4 in the 31st over.

Division Two

Division 2 Round Up:

In Division Two it was very much business as usual for the status quo as Netherfield, Blackpool, Chorley, Leyland all picked up victories as the battle for top spot continues.

Netherfield v Preston

At Parkside Road, Preston were asked to bat first and Netherfield soon made inroads as Joel Bibby 4-19 and latterly Michael Curran 3-46 took wickets at regular intervals.

However, there was some resistance from the Preston batsmen as they made a respectable 158 all out in 42.4 overs.

On home turf, Netherfield would certainly have been confident in chasing such a total but they were soon pegged back as the Preston attack took three quick wickets.

Fortunately Craig Walmsley 28, Liam Dugdale 58no and Oliver Hill (47) were on hand to rectify the matter and Netherfield crossed the winning line as they moved to 159-4 in the 34th over.

Darwen v Chorley

Fellow front runners Chorley also picked up a relatively comfortable victory as they collected 15 points against Darwen at Birch Hall.

Darwen won the toss and elected to bat, wickets fell at regular intervals as Chris Harty collected four for 10 from 12 overs, the only Darwen batsmen to offer any resistance were Andrew Brown 20 and Reece Willets 24 as the East Lancashire side were bowled out for 103 in the 39th over.

In response Chorley got off to a good start as Matthew Moore 15 and Max Harper 43 made some headway but as Greg Lawrenson 4-32 got into his stride things got a little more testing for the Windsor Park outfit as they lost four quick wickets in a middle order collapse.

Fortunately, skipper Alex Howarth 10no was on hand to steady the ship and he saw his side to victory as they moved to 106-6 in the 34th over.

Lancaster v Blackpool

In the Lune Valley, Sam Owen won the toss and elected to bat on muggy day at Lune Road.

His decision was vindicated as the Blackpool top order made the Lancaster attack toil, with Owen making 59 in putting on 93 for the 2nd wicket with debutant Dan Barling 34.

Both of whom fell to sharp return catches by Imran Ashraf 2-79. This brought Tom Myerscough 79no and Michael Penney 59 to the crease and they added 118 in good time as Blackpool finished 268-4 from their allocation.

In reply the Lancaster innings never really got going as the top order were demolished by Joel Watson 5-23 who bowled with accuracy and a hint of movement to collect his second five wicket haul of the season.

Alas it was left to the Blackpool spinners to clean up the tail, as the Lune Road outfit were bowled out for 56 in 19.2 overs.

Leyland v Penrith

At The Stanning Memorial Ground, Leyland hosted a Penrith side that have played some good cricket this season.

After being asked to bat the Fox Lane outfit were soon in bother as Hamza Khan 1 was run out, Tom Reece and Lloyd Tennant 22 then added 62 for the 2nd wicket before Sean Dunk joined Reece.

Dunk made 44 in a partnership of 102 as both batsmen scored runs with alacrity before Reece became the first 2nd Division batsman since 2014 to register two centuries in a season as he made 127 not out which matches his earlier score against Lancaster on the 7th of May.

At the 45 over mark Leyland had progressed to 216-4.

After successfully chasing 190 against St Annes, Penrith may have fancied their chances.

However, the Cumbrian side were soon placed on the back foot as they were reduced to 12-3 by Steven Pallett 2-21 and Elliot Boardman 2-28 before Joe Stamper 20 and Kieron Trevaskis 31 made something of a recovery but it was not enough for the Tynefield Park outfit as Ellis Robinson claimed five for 34 from 9 overs to leave Penrith 114 all out in the 31st over.

Fleetwood v St Annes

In the local derby at Vernon Road, Fleetwood took the majority of the spoils as they racked up 203-5 from their 45 overs.

Openers Paul Willis 29 and James Wilson 53 made a steady start for the Broadwater outfit and this was built upon by Andy Singleton 24 and Declan Clerkin 47 as they pushed Fleetwood past the 200 mark.

In response St Annes also made a steady start as Geeth Malinda Kamburugamuwe 53 punished any wayward bowling from the Fleetwood attack.

He was assisted by Sam Stanton who made 42 on his 2nd XI debut. Jonathan Amor managed to apply some pressure in picking up 3-44 as the St Annes chase fizzled out and they were left on 188-7 at the 45 over mark.

Barrow v Kendal

At Ernest Pass Kendal picked up their second victory of the season as they came out on top in a nail biting finish on the Furness Peninsula.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl Kendal made early in roads as Marcus Hill 4-23 picked up two early wickets.

There was then a period of resistance from the Barrow batting line up as Guy Heffernan 26, Robin Adams 19 and Ciaran Dawes 25 made life tough for the Kendal bowlers but after Joe Dodds 3-21 picked up the wickets of Heffernan and Adams the Barrow innings fell away and they were reduced to 92 all out in the 41st Over.

Defending such a total was always going to be difficult but Barrow came out all guns blazing and Paul Riley 3-10 and Sam Henderson 3-20 had soon removed the Kendal top three and wickets continued to fall as the Ernest Pass attack applied pressure.

Fortunately for the Shap Road side Oliver Tyson batted watchfully and made 19 in an otherwise barren batting card, he could not see them over the line but number 10 Steve Watson 5no and 11 Will Yarker 1no were on hand to move Kendal to 95-9 in the 41st over to give them 15 points.
