Match Day 8th August 2015

The Northern Cricket League Review for 8th August 2015

The top two draw but Fleetwood and Darwen win

It was another action packed weekend across both Division One and Division Two of the Northern Premier Cricket League.

In Division One, Morecambe and Blackpool will be left frustrated with winning draws while Fleetwood capitalise with a comfortable win at Preston.

DIVISION ONE:

Blackpool v Lancaster

Blackpool had to settle for winning draw with Lancaster at Stanley Park.

The defending League holders would have wanted to win this game, however with Morecambe also getting a winning draw, Paul Danson's team will be relatively content with where they are in the table.

After Ben Simm won the toss and elected to field, Blackpool got off to a bad start as they were struggling on 51-4. Tom Jefferson, Iqbal Khan, Matthew Houston and Alex Smith all falling to Liam Moffatt.

Stephen Twist was joined by Andy Furniss in a crucial partnership which took the score to 170 when Andy Furniss was dismissed to the relief of Lancaster for 71 off 80 balls, he was bowled by Rameez Raja.

Once Furniss was dismissed Stephen Twist soon followed as he was caught by Samuel Moorby off Rameez Raja with Blackpool in command at 201-6.

Lancaster claimed their final wicket when Joshua Boyne was run out for 3 by Rameez Raja.

Richard Gleeson unbeaten on 28 off 30 balls and Ben Howarth unbeaten with 11 off 10 balls saw Blackpool to a total of 231-7.

Liam Moffat after his opening burst finished with 4-104 from 17 overs and Rameez Raja took 2-32.

Lancaster's reply started badly as Danny Welbourne went for 0 after being caught by Stephen Twist off the bowling of Richard Gleeson.

Jamie Heywood and Rameez Raja pushed the score on to 96, both Heywood and Raja playing some good shots in a crucial second wicket partnership.before Steven Mercer claimed the wicket of Raja for 57 off 70 balls.

Once the partnership was broken Richard Gleeson took centre stage which saw Lancaster go from 99-2 to 119-6..He took the wickets of Charlie Swabrick for 4, Jamie Heywood, Alex Metcalfe , Keiran Moffatt with the Cumberland County star putting on another devastating spell of bowling.

Samuel Moorby with captain Ben Simm started a recovery and they took the total to 159 when Moorby became another Gleeson victim bowled for 22.

Lancaster looking down the barrel on 159-7 but thanks to an unbeaten knock of 64 off just 43 balls, by skipper Ben Simm supported by Matthew Liver 1 from 10 balls and Liam Moffat an unbeaten 9 from 21 saw Lancaster close on 222-9 off 51 overs.

Simm's stunning knock included 10 fours and 1 six.

Blackpool were so close to victory with Joshua Boyne claiming a wicket and Richard Gleeson closing on figures of 7-89 from 18 overs.

Darwen v Leyland

Darwen chased down a big score to remain in contention at the top of Division One as they defeated Leyland by 5 wickets in a dramatic game at Birch Hall.

Leyland would have been more than happy with their total as they posted a commanding score of 268-9 off 50 overs. Luis Reece lead the way with a top score of 73 off 83 balls and Nathan Mc Donnell hitting a crucial knock of 67 off 50 balls.

David Bowden ripped through the visitors with figures of 5-71 and John Cordingley had figures of 3-19.

Darwen's reply started off slowly with Ammer Mirza scoring 40 runs, then Darwen sub professional Janaka Guneratne took control and lit up Birch Hall with a stunning century, as his blistering 115 put Darwen within sight of victory. John Cordingley chipped in with 39 runs.

Jordan Clarke's team scored the winning runs in 49.3 overs, David Bowden with an unbeaten 48 helping Darwen to victory. Darwen closing on 271-5.

Andrew Jacques had figures of 3-57 with Luis Reece taking the other two wickets.

Morecambe v Kendal

Morecambe were left frustrated as they could only manage a winning draw against a very youthful and determined Kendal team at Woodhill Lane.

The League leaders went into the game full of confidence however Kendal would be no push over especially after running Blackpool so close the week before.

Josh Dixon's side posted a score of 163-5 off 50 overs, Mark Woodhead with a top score of 57 off 101 balls supported by Suraj Randiv with a patient 36 off 61 balls and Ryan Pearson helping himself to an unbeaten knock of 24 off 32 balls.

Chris Miller bowling throughout took 3-81 off 25 overs as Kendal did well to keep Morecambe under 200.

Kendal to their credit made it uncomfortable for Morecambe with Darren Nightingale top scoring with 38. Saeed Bariwala with 29 and 22 from Eldred Hawken and Shane Hyland unbeaten on 28, put the pressure on the Morecambe bowlers.

The League's leading wicket taker Suraj Randiv took over and with figures of 6-51 Morecambe restricted Kendal to 150-8.

Netherfield v Barrow

It was the battle of the two under achievers at Parkside Road, as Netherfield claimed a winning draw with Barrow.

Barrow made a steady start in their reply thanks to a partnership of 47 between Dean Williams and Tharanga Paranavitana. Ryan Wilson was brought into the attack for Dieter Klein and made an instant impact as Wilson trapped Dean Williams LBW, before also trapping Paranavitana. Williams going for 14 with Paranavitana going for 32.

Barrow lost Sam Dutton to Dieter Klein and Michael Wellings falling to Mark Clarkson with John Huck taking the catch Barrow were now 119-4.

Toby Mowat and Greg Reynolds knuckled down and were 158 when Mowat was out for 40.

Thanks to Greg Reynolds unbeaten on 40 and supported by Chris D'Leny 14 and Ryan Gilmour 4 not out Barrow reached 201-6 after their 50 overs.

Penrith v Chorley

Penrith were awarded the full 15 points after Chorley conceded the game at Tynefield Park.

Preston v Fleetwood

Fleetwood remain third in the League and in contention for the Division One title after a relatively straight forward nine wicket win at Preston.
