Defending Champions Leyland were held to a winning draw, whilst New boys Penrith get off to a winning start in a highly entertaining opening day of Northern Cricket League action.

Leyland v Barrow

League Champions Leyland had to settle for a winning draw in the battle of last seasons top two at Fox Lane.

David Makinson's team posted a more than competitive score of 220-5 off 50 overs, with new Professional acquisition Alex Ross made an impressive debut scoring 89 off 94 balls.

Luis Reece also batting well as he opened with 83 off 125 balls. In Barrow's reply they posted 175 for 9 off 50 overs.

Penrith v Kendal:

Penrith began life in the Northern League in dramatic style as they defeated Kendal by 2 wickets with just 2 balls too spare.

The hosts winning the toss as they put Kendal in. Stu Parkin's team indebted to the batting of Jamie How who posted 119 out of their total of 228 off 48.2 overs.

In reply a solid partnership of 85 between Ryan Carruthers (49) and Alex Atkinson (40) almost saw Penrith through to drinks. However both went before the interval.

The hosts struggling on 115-4 got back into the contest with a partnership of 46 between Paul Hindmarch and Ben Davidson. A quick fire 12 by Liam Trevaskis kept Penrith in touch.

However Kendal got on top when Paul Hindmarch went for 40 leaving Penrith needing 31.

Penrith though grabbed the initiative thanks to Jonothan Osborne who hit two fours and two sixes, with the hosts needing 5 off the last over.

Four were taken off the first two deliveries, leaving Osborne on strike to score the winning single with two balls to spare and Penrith take the spoils.

St Annes v Netherfield:

St Annes defeated Netherfield by 5 wickets.

Netherfield batting first closed on 207-5 off 50 overs. Sri Lankan Professional Saliya Saman top scoring with 66 off just 58 balls.

Ben Barrow with 32 off 57 balls, with Ryan Wilson posting a useful unbeaten score of 23 off just 23 balls including 3 sixes.

St Anne's debutant Mikey Harling took 4-55 with Toby Bulcock taking 3-76.

In reply St Annes knocked the runs off in the 49th over closing on 207-5. Andy Kellett with 44 off 71 balls and Lukman Vahaluwala 42 off 40 balls putting St Annes in a strong position. Nathan Bolus 33no and Matthew Taaffe 8no seeing St Annes home.

Lancaster v Darwen:

Darwen picked up a 66 run victory over Lancaster at Lune Road. Jordan Clarke's team batting first were bowled out for 166 in 44 overs.

Ammer Mirza top scoring with 72 and John Cordingley with 44, as Lancaster's Iain Burstow impressed returning figures of 5-20.

In reply South African professional George Linde ripped through Lancaster's batting taking 5-42 as Lancaster were shot out for 101.

Morecambe v Fleetwood:

Fleetwood came away from Woodhill Lane with a Winning Draw. The visitors batting first posted a commanding score of 235 for 8 off their 50 overs.

New South African professional Juan-Pierre De Villiers made a good start for Fleetwood scoring 63 off 52 balls, whilst skipper Mat Clark scored an unbeaten half century.

Morecambes Sub Professional Brett Pelser took 4-50. Pelser substiuting for Kelly Smuts who as yet to arrive in the country.

In reply Morecambe held on closing with 177 for 6, Brett Pelser with 52 off 79 balls, whilst Ryan Pearson also contributed with 42 off 52 balls.

Chorley v Preston:

Chorley defeated Saeed Bariwala's Preston by 61 runs. The hosts were all out for 161. Will Moulton with 41. Shoib Abdul Cadir with figures of 4-33, Saeed Bariwala 3-39 and Afzal Kapadia with 3-22.

In reply Preston were all out for 116 in 37.2 overs, Sarfraz Navaz Patel with 50 for the visitors.

Sunday 20th April - Fleetwood v Lancashire Colts:

Fleetwood defeated the Lancashire Colts by 3 wickets in the Sunday fixture. Lancashire batting first all out for 162 in 49 overs. Jean De Villiers returning figures of 5-41.

In reply 50 by Adam Bell and 57 by Adam Parker helped Fleetwood on their way as the hosts closed on 164-7 in 35.4 overs.

Barrow v Leyland:

Leyland 2nds made a dominating start to the campaign with a 15 point win over Barrow at Ernest Pass.

The visitors posting 208 for 3, Tom Reece with 84. In reply Barrow were all out for 72. Tom Reece and Steven Pallett with 3 wickets each.

Darwen v Lancaster

Darwen beat Lancaster by 123 runs. The hosts were all out for 175, Andrew Brown with 82, Lancaster's Matthew Liver taking 6-16.

In reply Lancaster bowled out for 52 in just 28 overs, Greg Lawrenson taking 5-2.

Fleetwood v Morecambe:

Fleetwood take the winning draw with Morecambe. The hosts closing on 162 for 8, Josh Heaney with 45 and Andy Singleton with 40. Morecambe closing on 121-9. Josh Heaney completing a good day with figures of 5-19.

Kendal v Preston:

Kendal defeated Penrith out by 5 wickets in a low scoring game at Shap Road. Penrith batting first were all out for 88 in 42.4 overs.

Andrew Dugdale taking 4-17. In reply 25 by Richard Herron and 22 by Paul Dodds helped the hosts home closing on 89 for 5 in 30.4 overs.

Netherfield v St Annes:

Netherfield take 12 points with an 8 wicket win over St Annes. Brad Airey with 4-73 as St Annes close on 185-9.

In reply Netherfield's Craig Walmsley hits 76 and an unbeaten 79 by Matthew Goodall saw the hosts home in 38 overs closing on 186-2.

Preston v Chorley.

Chorley defeated Preston out by 10 wickets at West Cliff. The hosts demolished for 50 in just 27.4 overs. Chorley knocking the runs off in just 9.2 overs reaching 51-0.
