Leyland denied by Netherfield's last pair
Blackpool players celebrate their dramatic victory over St Annes |
Leyland gained nine points on leaders St Annes in the race for the championship of the Furness Building Society Northern Premier Cricket League (incorporating Readers Cricket Balls).
On a dramatic afternoon defending champions Leyland were frustrated by the last Netherfield pair at Fox Lane but still gained ten points from a winning draw. St Annes, meanwhile, went down to neighbours Blackpool by four runs off the penultimate ball of a thrilling, low-scoring game reduced to 25 overs per side.
With three games remaining St Annes (219pts) lead the way from Leyland (210pts) and Chorley (197pts).
Luis Reece broke David Wareing's amateur club batting record in making 82 off 110 balls in his side's 227/5dec in 39 overs. Reece, who had made an unbeaten hundred for the MCC Universities at Fenner's the day before has now made 954 runs in 18 innings with eight fifties and one hundred. Wareing made 953 runs at an average of 56 in the 1973 season.
Pro Brett Pelser hit 75 off 71 balls, sharing a third wicket stand of 133 with Reece after Adam Coates made 44 at almost a run-a-ball. Pelser has hit 896 runs and has his eyes on Gordon Greenidge's club record of 976 runs set in 1993. Stuart Nixon took 3/54 for Netherfield including last week's century-maker Henry Thompson for a first ball duck, trapped lbw.
In a rain-reduced game Netherfield had 49 overs to bat and vice-captain Ben Haddrick hit a fine 70 off 112 balls. Peter Cummings took 4/25 off 13 overs and Andrew Makinson and Tayyab Afsar each took two wickets; but the last pair of John Mason and Marcus Hill denied Leyland, batting for a total of 75 balls.
St Annes had reason to thank Netherfield for their stubbornness after gaining only one point from an amazing game at Stanley Park. Overnight and morning rain had got under the covers and play only began at 3-45pm with a match reduced to 25 overs per side.
Blackpool looked to be on a hiding to nothing as they lost the toss and struggled to 84/5 on a drying pitch that afforded lift to St Annes' deputy pro Muhammad Hasnain, who bowled impressively to take 3/34 off 13 overs. Pro Con De Lange hit 21 and John Mounsey defied several blows to the body to make 31, skipper Paul Danson hitting an unbeaten 13.
St Annes appeared to have a straightforward task but Blackpool's Richard Gleeson was inspired, bowling with sustained hostility and penetration. Mike Tidams trapped Atiq Uz-Zaman lbw for 12, Gleeson weighed in with the wickets of Nanthesh Kiruparan and Nathan Armstrong to leave St Annes wobbling at 27/3. De Lange then entered the attack and bowled a miserly spell, taking 3/6 off seven overs while Gleeson kept probing away at the other end, backed by superb wicketkeeping by Rob Sissons.

Ben Dowling was caught by Sissons for 11, Nathan Bolus superbly stumped and then skipper Andy Kellett caught behind after a stand of 20 with Husnain, who was then caught by Daniel Dixon off Gleeson. As the tension grew De Lange snapped up the wickets of Duncan Whalley and Ben Willis in the penultimate over. The last pair needed nine off the last over and after surviving a chance at slip Neil Bradley was caught off a skier off Gleeson with one ball remaining, Sissons claiming his fifth victim of the innings as Blackpool's joy was unconfined. Gleeson finished with 6/53 off 12.5 overs and now has 43 wickets for the season as he attempts to reach the 50-mark for the third successive season.

Third-placed Chorley enjoyed a convincing win at Fleetwood after restricting the home side to 122/8 in a game reduced to 41 overs. Fleetwood were captained by pro Ryan Smith with skipper Mat Clark on best man duties for wicketkeeper Lee Jones's wedding. Adam Parker defied the visitors with a high class unbeaten 63 off 97 balls, his seventh fifty of the season. Billy Smith and pro Gaurav Dhar each took three wickets for Chorley who reached their target for the loss of four wickets with 13 balls remaining. Openers Alex Weetman (29) and Jack Catterall (32) set them on the way with a stand of 68.
Kendal enjoyed a resounding victory over Lancaster at Shap Road as they warmed up for their Barbados Cockspur t20 regional final against Hyde. Jon Miles hit 73 off 92 balls and pro Jamie How 72 off 57 balls as Kendal declared on 202/5 after 37 of their allotted 43 overs. How hit six fours and four sixes, sharing a stand of 83 with the Cumberland opener. Ben Simm took 3/73 against his former club.
Lancaster subsided to 76 all out in reply, skipper Chris Miller taking 5/19 off 6.3 overs. Miller now has 58 wickets for the season, two short of equalling the club record he set last year. Simm has 55 wickets, six short of the Lancaster amateur record he established also last season.
Barrow captain Chris D'Leny and vice-captain Liam Livingstone rescued their side from the depths of 12/4 and paved the way for victory by four wickets at West Cliff. In a match reduced to 42 overs, Preston made 123, Mohsin Modhi batting fluently for 37 off 40 balls and Daryl Wearing picking up 4/72. Left arm spinner Gary Collins took 3/13 off 12 overs.
Preston captain Lukman Vahaluwala trapped Barrow's prolific pro Pieter Malan lbw first ball and combined with Andrew Starkie to wreck the early order. But Livingstone hit four fours and four sixes in making 59 off 66 balls, adding 98 for the fifth wicket with D'Leny, who was unbeaten on 49 off 76 balls at the close.
Darwen pro Mohammad Zaman Khan produced a fine all round performance but his side had to settle for a winning draw against Morecambe at Birch Hall. He made 62 off 82 balls in his side's 145 as Morecambe pro Anwar Ali took 5/33 to take his seasonal tally to 67 wickets; Jono Gates captured 4/47. Morecambe had 33 overs to reach their target in a rain-reduced game but closed on 121/5 despite Khan taking 4/35 off 11 overs. Chris Williams and Ryan Pearson steered the visitors top>safety after they had been 73/5.

The pair shared an unbroken second wicket stand of 204; Royle making 102no off 123 balls with 15 fours and one six, McDonnell the same score off 89 balls with ten fours and five sixes. Steve Pallett then took 3/14 and Danny Lamb, Stephen Cartwright and Alex Williams each took two wickets as the home side were all out for 136 in reply.

Christian Davies took six wickets to spearhead Darwen's 50 runs win at Morecambe while Kendal just had the better of a low-scoring draw at Lune Road.
