Darwen start Centenary Season with a bang

Defending Champions Leyland earn first win against 2009 Champions St Annes

By Michael Latham

Chris Wade was Darwen's hero with a five wicket haul

Darwen CC belatedly began the Club's centenary season in the Furness Building Society Northern Premier League (incorporating Readers Cricket Balls) with a resounding seven wickets win over Fleetwood.

After sitting out the opening fixtures John Cordingley's side was anxious to make for lost time and they did just that, bowling out the visitors for 93 in 24.5 overs. Kamran Anwar removed both openers before Adam Parker and Mike Clinning took Fleetwood to 66 for 2. But pro Mohammad Zaman Khan pulled off two superb catches to dismiss both batsmen in quick succession off Chris Wade and the visitors lost their last eight wickets for only 27 runs.

Wade, the tall seam bowler who made his mark last season took five for 28 with Yakub Bhamji entering the attack to claim three for six in what was a clinical display of out cricket. Wicketkeeper Jordan Clarke surpassed Khan's heroics with a simply sensational catch to dismiss Fleetwood pro Ryan Smith from an inside edge off Wade and claimed four dismissals.

Mohammad Zaman Khan saw Darwen home with an undefeated 54

The Darwen pro Zaman Khan then steered his side past their target with an accomplished undefeated 54 off 57 balls as Cordingley's men were celebrating victory before the reading of the football results.

Darwen CC are celebrating their Centenary

At Fox Lane the defending Champions Leyland met 2009 Champions St Annes who welcomed back Sri Lankan pro Dinuka Hettiarachchi for a third season. St Annes struggled against a consistent attack, pro Brett Pelser, Andrew Makinson, James Rounding and Tayyab Afsar each taking two wickets. Only Hettiarachchi made much headway with 32 off 69 balls as the visitors were dismissed for 119. Luis Reece, who has been playing for Leeds-Bradford UCCE and is in the Unicorns squad for the CB40 then hit 43 off 57 balls and with Pelser making 31 off 40 balls Leyland got home by five wickets at around a quarter-to-six.

Morecambe were at home to Barrow at Woodhill Lane and new professional Anwar Ali continued his fine start with a match-winning performance. The Pakistan A representative took three for 45 to restrict the visitors to 141 for 7, South African pro Pieter Malan fifth man out for a valuable 49. Morecambe captain Mark Woodhead batted throughout for a crucial undefeated 46 and Anwar Ali helped him add 71 for the fourth wicket to see his side to the verge of victory. Ali hit a fine 51 including seven fours.

Carnforth entertained a Lancaster side fresh from their seven runs victory over Blackpool at Lodge Quarry. Lancaster Dwayne Hees, a South African all rounder was on debut.
Hees was run out by Robert Parker after making 18 and with Gareth Pedder bowling Lancaster skipper Michael Stevens for a duck the visitors were soon on the back foot. Pedder, the Carnforth professional went on to take four for 26 and with Matt Weller and Warren Quinn each weighing in with two wickets Lancaster struggled to 112.

Carnforth openers Ryan Nelson and skipper Adam Hornby, who both missed the opening day defeat at Preston then posted 101 for the first wicket before the latter was caught behind off Tim Barry for 42. Nelson was undefeated on 62 as the home side won by nine wickets.

Two clubs still awaiting the arrival of their professionals met at Stanley Park. Blackpool hired the Rishton pro Cameron Delport, a highly rated South African batsman while Kendal had the services of Littleborough's prolific scoring Australian batsman Clinton Perrin.

Delport won the battle of the sub-professionals, having Delport caught behind by Rob Sissons for 20 as Kendal slumped to 97 for 7. Mike Tidmas and Stephen Twist, on his Blackpool debut each took two wickets. Chris Marshall and Nick Lewthwaite then put on an undefeated stand of 73 for the eighth wicket to lead Kendal to a respectable 170 for 7, Lewthwaite finishing 45 not out.
John Mounsey then provided the backbone of Blackpool's reply, batting through the innings for an undefeated 56 off 109 balls as the home side won by six wickets. Twist made 48 off 72 balls and Delport hit a classy 56 off only 39 balls with eight fours and three sixes.

Netherfield hope that pro Brady Barends will arrive in time for the Bank Holiday fixtures; they had Rochdale's South African pro Dieter Klein as deputy for the visit of Preston. Klein made 42 off 46 balls and captain Chris Parry 49 off 48 balls as Netherfield made 186 for 7, Preston pro Saeed Bariwala taking four for 64 with his off-spin.
Preston were then dismissed for 164, leg-spinner Marc Hadwin claiming six for 76 and Stuart Nixon four for 49. Mohsin Modhi made 39, Bariwala 32 and Sajid Nalbandh 39 all made valuable contributions without going on to make the big innings that would have seen Preston home.

A reminder that next weekend sees a double programme with six games in Round 3 on Saturday and the remaining game, Fleetwood against Lancashire Colts on Sunday.
On Bank Holiday Monday all 14 sides are in action in Division One.

Match Report by Michael Moore

Blackpool v Kendal

Looking to make amends for last weekend`s reverse @ Lancaster, Danno`s Boys welcomed Cumbrians Kendal to Stanley Park on a somewhat cool and overcast Saturday afternoon, which was in marked contrast to the preceding few days warm and sunny weather.

Captain Fantastic won the toss and invited Chris Miller`s team to bat, a decision which quickly proved to be a good one, when teenager Mike Tidmas had opener Gareth Ashburner caught at gully by John Mounsey off a lively lifting delivery to put Kendal on 3 for 1 in the second over.

Once again Tidmas bowled a very tidy first 5 over spell taking 1 wicket for 6 runs.

Next man to fall was Barrow boy Johnathan Miles, lbw to the accurate left arm pace of Steven Twist for 18 (Kendal 43 for 2). This brought the evergreen Terry Hunte to the middle, fresh from his innings of 91 v Morecambe the previous week.

Sub pro Cameron Delporte replaced Gleeson at the pavillion end and in his first over he had Kendal`s stand-in pro Aussie Clinton Perren neatly caught behind by Rob Sissons for 20 and the visitors were on the back foot @ 49 for 3. When Jack White followed quickly caught at mid-on by Gleeson off the reliable Twist (2 for 17 in 9 ) Kendal were reeling at 55 for 4 in the 20th over, as Blackpool`s seam attack kept up the pressure with good accurate bowling, backed up by some sharp fielding.

With the score on 78 the Seasiders picked up thr prize scalp of the prolific Terry Hunte (17)courtesy of a fine running catch by skipper Danson off brother-in-law to be Richard Gleeson(1 for 36 in 13)

No. 6 batsman Oliver Field became Tidmas`s 2nd victim, clean bowled for 15and Kendal were 96 for 6 in the 36th over. With Gary Baker following immediately,, bowled by the mercurial Steve Mercer for no score,@ 97 for 7 Kendal looked like capitulating for just over the hundred mark.

However, Chris Marshall(34 not out) and Nick Lewthwaite (45 not out) rallied with a fighting 73 run partnership in the last 23 oversto forge the Cumbrians to a challenging 170 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs, at least 50 more than they might have expected.

In the second half Kendal got off to a good start, claiming the wicket of opener Alex Smith(0) caught at square leg mistiming a pull shot off Jack White (Blackpool 3 for 1). But that really was the last of the good news for Miller`s Men. Opener John Mounsey (56 not out)and number 3 Steven Twist (48) put on a superb 89 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Twist looked very much at ease in the no. 3 spot for his new club, showing timing and power in his confident time at the crease.

John Mounsey who always puts in the hard yards at practice, continues to improve and impress. His array of shots all round the wicket was highlighted when he swept Pro Perren`s off spin for 4 and 6 in his opening over to mark his domination of the bowling

The 2 Blackpool lads batted well together but they were eclipsed by the performance of sub pro Delporte, who smashed 56 in 37 balls, including 8 boundary 4s and 3 towering sixes, 2 of which threatened the greenhouses in Stanley Parks Nursery!

Mounsey and Delporte added 72 for the 3rd wicket before the young South African became Perren`s first victim caught behind by Baker leaving Blackpool needing just 7 runs to win in 14 overs.

Not the best time to come to the crease and the unfortunate Andy Furniss became Perren`s 2nd victim caught behind off only his second delivery received.

Blackpool passed their target with an edge off Moore`s new bat, as Danno`s Boys achieved their first victoy of the season and what an emphatic one it was.One of many to come I feel sure. 12 valuable points and a big push up the league table.

Much better performance Fellers. Let`s take that forward with confidence to Chorley next Saturday. See you all on Tuesday.....Mick.

Off-spinner Fisher completed a fine all-round match with four for 31.

With Matthew Painter making 38 Darwen edged home in the face of a fighting performance by Fleetwood in the field, taking 52 overs to reach a winning total of 140 for 8.

Barrow played Morecambe at Ernest Pass and Ian Allington's young side had a fine win by 45 runs. The feature of Barrow's 176 for 7 was a partnership of 109 for the sixth wicket between youngsters Ryan Gilmour, who was run out for 73 off 134 balls and Tom Milligan who was also run out for 44 off 86 balls which rescued their side from 49 for 5. In reply opener Ian Izzat held Morecambe's innings together with 61 off 118 balls but only Usman Allam also reached double figures as the visitors were dismissed for 131, Glenn Kermode taking three for 34.
