Leyland and Chorley earn wins batting second in D2 title race
Captain Chris Miller was Kendal's hero at Leyland with seven wickets |
St Annes took what could prove a decisive hold on the destiny of the title in the Furness Building Society Northern Premier Cricket League (incorporating Readers Cricket Balls).
The 2009 champions emerged with a maximum 15-points haul from their thrilling, low-scoring game at Lancaster while the defending champions Leyland lost heavily at home to Kendal.
As a result St Annes (played 21- 218pts) hold a 22-point lead over Leyland (20-196) with Chorley (20-179) in third, followed by Netherfield (21-177) and Morecambe (20-180).
St Annes were still without pro Dinuka Hettiarachchi who is back home in Sri Lanka with his expectant wife; sub-pro Qaiser Abbas, also a slow left-armer did the damage in their thrilling win at Lune Road.
The 29-year-old Todmorden professional proved an inspired deputy as St Annes somehow protected their modest total of 91.
Left-arm seamer Liam Moffatt did the damage for Lancaster, taking 5/38 off 14 overs as St Annes, 49/7 at one stage, were dismissed in 32 overs, Ben Simm taking 3/41 and skipper Michael Stevens 2/5.
Abbas bowled unchanged for 21 overs and collected 7/30 with good support from the promising Matthew Grindley who took 2/9 off 7.5 overs. Kieran Moffatt hit a valiant undefeated 28 but Charles Boucher took a fine catch to dismiss Liam Moffatt off Grindley and win the game for Andy Kellett's side.
Leyland were undone by Kendal skipper Chris Miller as they went down to defeat by 108 runs at Fox Lane in a curtain-raiser to next Sunday's Readers Cup Final.
Off-spinner Miller bowled a magical spell of 14 overs, capturing 7/23 to take his seasonal tally to 49 wickets as Leyland collapsed to a dismal 54 all out. Stu Parkin supported Miller with 2/6 as Kendal's out-cricket was outstanding. Unicons rep player Luis Reece fell to a fine catch on the boundary off Miller and pro Brett Pelser was well caught by Nick Phillips at cover for a rare duck. Miller made a wonderful catch to dismiss Peter Cummings off his own bowling.
Kendal opener Jonathan Miles hits Leyland's Peter Cummings for 6 |
Kendal pro Jamie How, who kept wicket impressively as an emergency top-scored with an impressive 41 off 40 balls after play began nearly half-an-hour late due to a saturated outfield. How was run out by Pelser , who also claimed the assist for Nick Phillips' run-out as well as two catches. Skipper David Makinson took 3/57 in Kendal's 162/9 after 46 overs, Jon Miles making 37 and Terry Hunte 7.
Kiwi Test star Jamie How hit 41 and kept wicket impressively |
Chorley player-coach Iain Critchley took 4/4 off seven overs to inspire his side's 15-pt win over Barrow at Windsor Park. Barrow subsided from 62/3, losing their last seven wickets for 25 runs with pro Gaurav Dhar taking 2/22. Opener Daryl Wearing was crucially run out by Stu Naden for 32. Kieran McCullagh had claimed three early wickets, including the prize one of Barrow's prolific pro Pieter Malan for 11, caught behind by skipper Andy Holdsworth and ended the game with a superb slip catch to dismiss Lee Hogg off Dhar.
Malan, on his 22nd birthday had earlier bowled 20 overs and taken 4/53 as Chorley limped along to 103, Jack Bentham making an invaluable 31 off 55 balls after coming in at number eight. Wearing took 3/36 off 19 overs and virtually made the ball talk during a mesmeric opening spell.
Fleetwood pro Ryan Smith produced the fireworks in his side's 15-points win over Preston at Broadwater. After the home side struggled to 87 for 6 Smith hit an unbeaten 82 off 64 balls including five sixes to propel his side to 172/6. His last 55 runs came off only 23 balls with Scott Richardson lending valuable support in an unbroken seventh wicket stand of 85. Preston pro Saeed Bariwala took 4/90.
Opener Mohsin Modhi hit 58 off 83 balls in Preston's reply but Sam Bell and Mike Clinning each took three wickets as the visitors were dismissed for 126.
In a low-scoring game at Stanley Park, Carnforth were indebted to an unbeaten 23 by Adam Cowperthwaite as they edged home by one wicket against Blackpool. Carnforth pro Gareth Pedder took 6/31 including five wickets clean-bowled as the home side were dismissed for 89 in 39.5 overs. Matt Weller supported him with a spell of 3/12. Blackpool pro Con De Lange took 6/15 off 13 overs but Ryan Nelson (25), Tom Barnfield (21) and Cowperthwaite all made invaluable contributions in a nerve-wracking finish.
Cumberland County all-rounder Chris Williams produced a superb all-round display as his side defeated the Colts by seven wickets at Woodhill Lane. Williams captured 6/63 as the Colts made 188/9 and then hit an undefeated 92 including 11 fours and two sixes in Morecambe's reply. Opener Josh Dixon made 50 and pro Anwar Ali an undefeated 39.
Darwen had to settle for a winning draw against Netherfield at Birch Hall in a match reduced to 39 overs. Alex Davies hit 62 off 84 balls and pro Mohammad Zaman Khan 52 off 60 balls in their side's 210/5. Marc Brown hit 52 as Netherfield closed on 126/5.
