Leyland earn crushing win at the seaside
Jack Bentham claims the winning catch for Chorley on the boundary |
Furness Building Society Northern Premier Cricket League (incorporating Readers Cricket Balls) leaders St Annes enjoyed a thrilling victory over Kendal at Shap Road.
After being invited to bat by Kendal captain Chris Miller, St Annes struggled to reach 166 with Duncan Whalley (26) and Ben Willis (23) the major contributors. Willis nursed the tail as the last three wickets added 52 invaluable runs as Stu Parkin took 4/58.
Kendal looked to be cruising as they reached 69/1 but St Annes pro Dinuka Hetteriachchi bowled 24 overs to take 4/43 and skipper Andy Kellett made a stunning one-handed catch to dismiss Kiwi international Jamie How off Willis for 46. Kendal threw away their winning chance with some undisciplined running between the wickets, losing Nick Lewthwaite and Parkin to run outs.
When Jack White was caught by Jake Sunderland off Hettiarachchi for 21 on the long on boundary off the last ball of the 48 th over it was left to the last pair to secure a draw. But last man Mark Williams was bowled by Matt Grindley off the first ball of the 49 th over as Kendal finished 149 all out.
St Annes (128pts) lead defending Champions Leyland (113pts) by 15pts. Leyland had a crushing win at Stanley Park, Luis Reece (67), Adam Coates (67) and pro Brett Pelser (74) the major contributors to their imposing total of 256/3. Blackpool subsided to 132 all out in reply despite Alex Smith's 46, James Rounding taking 4/12 and Pelser 3/40.
Chorley moved to third after earning 15pts from their win over Netherfield; Andy Holdsworth's side have already surpassed last season's points tally. They have 107pts with Netherfield and Morecambe joint fourth on 100pts.
Iain Critchley was Chorley's match-winner against Netherfield |
Chorley player-coach Iain Critchley spun his side to victory by 38 runs after an enthralling game at Windsor Park. The slow left arm bowler captured 5/21 off 16 overs as Netherfield collapsed from 78/2 to 139 all out. Pro Gaurav Dhar took the wickets of John Huck and Ben Barrow in consecutive balls, Huck having top-scored with 45 off 73 balls. Last man Stuart Nixon fell to a fine catch in the outfield by Jack Bentham off Dhar for 15 with 4.3 overs remaining.
Netherfield lost two early wickets, Marc Brown run out by Ian Oakes' direct hit and Alex Atkinson trapped leg before to Kieran McCullagh; but Ben Haddrick and Huck appeared to be setting up a comfortable win until Haddrick was adjudged leg before to Critchley, sparking the tumble of wickets.

Earlier Netherfield's new Australian pro Ben Laughlin captured the wicket of Stu Naden with his fifth ball in Northern League cricket to a smartly taken caught-and-bowled. The One Day International from Queensland went on to take 3/55 off 17 overs just two days after arriving in the country.

Chorley captain Holdsworth made 34 until he miscued a pull shot against Laughlin and was caught by Chris Parry. Chorley slumped to 113/7 but Iain Critchley (34) and teenager Alex Weetman (31) provided vital late resistance, their stand of 53 ultimately proving crucial. Nathan Chambers took 2/43 with Nixon and John Mason each taking one wicket in Chorley's 174/9.
Morecambe skipper Mark Woodhead set up his side's win at Carnforth by batting throughout his side's innings of 233/3. Woodhead hit an unbeaten 106 with 113 fours and one six, his second Northern League Division One century. Lewis Edge (55) and Chris Williams (39) gave valuable support.
Opener Darren Moore hit a fluent 53 in Carnforth's reply but the home side were dismissed for 169 with 4.1 overs remaining, Morecambe pro Anwar Ali taking 4/65 and Jono Gates and Williams each capturing two wickets.
Darwen pro Mohammad Zaman Khan hit his first century of the summer in his side's crushing defeat of Preston at West Cliff. Khan was bowled by Imtiaz Matak off the last ball of Darwen's innings for 101 off 119 balls with five fours and four sixes; his fourth wicket stand of 117 with skipper John Cordingley (47 off 70 balls) provided the backbone of Darwen's 226/7.
Off-spinner Chris Clarke then got to work, taking the first three wickets to fall and going on to record figures of 5/57 off 14 overs. Preston slumped to 40/8 but Paul Paynter hit 31 off 41 balls and put on 50 for the ninth wicket with Charlie Williams. Zaman Khan then took two wickets in his first over as the home side were dismissed for 90.
The league' leading runs-scorer, Barrow pro Pieter Malan hit an undefeated century in a thrilling game at Broadwater. Malan made 117 not out off 154 balls with 13 fours and one six in his side's 212/5. Skipper Chris D'Leny made 43 off 48 balls. Despite Adam Parker hitting 75 off 108 balls with nine fours Fleetwood finished just short on 209/8 as the visitors claimed a winning draw.
