Uz-Zaman led St Annes to victory at Preston with an
undefeated 60 |
Leyland stretched their lead at the top of the
Furness Building Society Northern Premier Cricket League
(incorporating Readers Cricket Balls) to 18 points after
earning a maximum 15-points haul from a dramatic
penultimate-over 69 runs win at Barrow.
Defending champions
St Annes stayed second after a 12-points win at Preston and
the two top sides meet in an eagerly-awaited clash at Fox Lane
next Saturday in what promises to be the match of the season
so far.
Blackpool earned a tense two wickets win in the
Fylde coast derby at Broadwater over Fleetwood while elsewhere
there were wins for Darwen, Morecambe and Netherfield.
Leyland reached 236 for 9 at Ernest Pass with
the in-form Chris Parkinson continuing his recent rich vein of
form by making 83 off 122 balls with 11 fours and one six.
Karl Cross made a welcome return to form with 52 off 78 balls
in the middle order to atone for a rare failure by pro Brett
Pelser who was bowled by Liam Livingstone for 20. Leyland
captain David Makinson blasted 24 off 12 balls before becoming
one of Barrow captain Daryl Wearing's three victims while home
pro Pasan Wanasinghe took his weekend's tally to 12 wickets as
he claimed five for 54.
Wanasinghe survived a chance behind the wicket
before he had scored to underpin Barrow's reply with 52 off 89
balls. The prolific opener Jon Miles hit 38 but James Rounding
and Luis Reece kept plugging away for Leyland. Rounding
claimed three for 64 off 16 overs and Reece, fit again to bowl
after a side strain six for 46 off 14.5 overs, including the
wicket of Barrow chairman Ray Mowat caught behind by Matthew
Watkinson off the fifth ball of the penultimate over of the
match as Barrow were dismissed for 167, the last four wickets
falling for only two runs.
Dinuka
Hettiarachchi took five wickets for defending champions
St Annes |
St Annes wrapped up an eight wicket win at West
Cliff over last season's runners-up Preston before six
o'clock. Spin ace Dinuka Hettiarachchi wheeled away to take
five for 38 off 23.1 overs as Preston were bowled out for 123.
Opener Sajid Patel and skipper Adam Parker each made 37 but
the last eight wickets fell for only 26 runs, Nathan Bolus
claiming two run out victims.

The league's leading amateur batsman in each of
the last two years, Atiq Uz-Zaman then led the victory charge
with an unbeaten 60 off 81 balls though it might have been a
different story had he been caught in the outfield off a
routine chance from Preston pro Bilal Asad when only six.
Charles Boucher (38) combined in a second wicket stand of 86
after skipper Andy Kellett had helped Atiq post 35 for the
opening stand.

Mike Clinning held the Fleetwood innings
together with a typically classy innings of 50 as Blackpool
restricted out the home side to 155 for 9. Steven Mercer
claimed three wickets for 46 in a productive 18 over spell and
pace-man Richard Gleeson returned two for 43 off 15 overs with
classy wicketkeeper Rob Sissons accounting for four victims
behind the timbers.
Fleetwood's pro and captain Matt Frith
(three for 45) earned three quick wickets, including Blackpool
pro Nimesh Perera trapped leg-before to reduce the visitors to
18 for 3. But Andy Furniss, Michael Moore and skipper Paul
Danson all dug in against some hostile bowling from Ryan Smith
(three for 77). But with Blackpool 120 for 8 Fleetwood looked
the likelier winners until the ninth wicket pair of Andy
Hogarth and Gleeson combined in a match-winning stand to see
their side over the finishing line and confirm Blackpool's
batting strength.
Leyland (109pts), St Annes (91) and Blackpool
(76) lead the way but Morecambe are also in-form and they
defeated local rivals Lancaster by four wickets at Woodhill
Lane. David Heywood top-scored with 48 off 79 balls in
Lancaster's 187 as pro Mandla Mashimbyi took four for 72 off
19 overs and skipper Tommy Clough three for 38 off 13.1
overs.
The consistent Mark Woodhead (45) and Chris Williams
(42) were the mainstays of a steady batting reply, Mashimbyi
making 35 off 43 balls before Ryan Smith and Phil Dennison saw
Morecambe home with two overs to spare.
Darwen pro Mohammad Zaman Khan hit his second
century of the season to propel his side to an outstanding 155
runs victory at Windsor Park over Chorley. Fresh from a
productive day as sub-professional in his old haunts of the
Central Lancashire League on Sunday (scoring an unbeaten 90
and taking six for 38 in Royton's win over Oldham) Zaman Khan
hit a magnificent 159 off 127 balls including 24 fours and
four sixes. He shared a third wicket stand of 180 with
teenager Alex Davies who hit 68 off 132 balls, including 12
fours after the visitors had lost openers Niall Burke and
Chris Lowe both for ducks.
Darwen's 278 for 4 looked a long way away as
Kamran Anwar and Chris Wade combined to reduce Chorley to 9
for 3. Despite a battling 46 from Will Moulton and a defiant
40 from 20 balls by Kieran McCullagh Chorley subsided to 123
all out, teenager Kamran Anwar claiming five for 10 from his
seven overs with Wade and Burke each taking two wickets and
Zaman Khan chipping in with the wicket of Moulton. Burke also
pouched three catches.
In the Kendal derby at Parkside Road Netherfield
successfully chased down Kendal's 200 for 7 to win by six
wickets with 11.2 overs in hand. Australian pro Nick Kruger
hit 63 off 53 balls and stand-in skipper Chris Parry 30 before
John Huck (23 not out) and Ben Haddrick (32 not out) saw
Netherfield home. Kendal pro and captain Ross McMillan was the
mainstay of his side's innings with 60 off 88 balls with
significant contributions from teenaged opener Nick Phillips
(39), Terry Hunte (36) and Gary Baker (37). Phillips and
McMillan added 101 for the second wicket as Stuart Nixon
toiled through 21 overs to take three for 81.

12-point lead over Leyland (74pts) despite a seven wickets
home defeat by third-placed Chorley (68pts). David Catterall

Leyland rued several missed chances in the field
as they had to be content with a winning draw against Barrow
at Fox Lane. Nathan McDonnell hit 84 off 124 balls and Wes

70. McDonnell then took three for 23 and Daniel Hall three for
38 but Barrow closed on 169 for 8.

Sam Owen's unbeaten 50 and 49 from opener Nick
Wall helped Blackpool reach 200 for 6 at Stanley Park against
Fleetwood who were then dismissed for 123 despite a battling
61 from deputy captain Mark Wilkinson. Mike Tidmas claimed an
outstanding analysis of five for 19 from his ten overs.
The prolific Russ Bradley hit an unbeaten 114 as
St Annes declared on 260 for 4 against Preston at Vernon Road,
teenager Nathan Armstrong contributing 58. But Preston

REPORT BY MICHAEL MOORE
Thrills and spills at Broadwater
Fleetwood v Blackpool
Danno and his team of Dynamos travelled the few
miles down the road to Broadwater today to take on old rivals
Fleetwood in a game which proved to be one of the most
exciting ever between these two long standing adversaries.
Put into bat by the visiting captain on a pitch
that had been newly prepared on the day Fleetwood lost the
early wicket of Emsley, the first of keeper Sisson's four
catches, off the bowling off paceman Gleeson (3 for 1). Aussie
Matt Frith (23) and the seasoned Michael Clinning (50) then
put on 47 for the second wicket before Hogarth had the
Fleetwood pro. caught behind by the ever reliable Sissons.
Teenage Journeyman Dean Bell (20), who has had
already had more clubs than Jack Nicklaus then took the score
to 93 when he became Robbo's third victim off the leg spin of
pro Nimesh Perera and Tom Wilson(1) followed soon after bowled
by the wily Steve Mercer (94 for4) .
Wickets then fell at regular intervals as some
tight bowling and energetic fielding from the Blackpool lads
appeared to place a stranglehold on the game . Two excellent
runouts for Mercer and Gleeson heaped on the misery for
Fleetwood as they capitulated to 155 for 9 in their overs.
Steve Mercer finished with 3 for 46 of 18, yet
again Blackpool's best bowler and Gleeson racked up 2 for 43.
One wicket each for Perera and Hogarth appeared to put Danno's
Boys in the driving seat.
Blackpool's reply started slowly and poorly as
they slid to 18 for 3 at little more than a run per over .Matt
Frith was the main protagonist removing all 3 top order
batsmen with some tidy medium quick bowling.
Andy Furniss
(21) and Michael Moore (23) then staged a mini revival taking
the score to 59 before Furnie popped one up to point and Bash
was run out with the score on 64.
The next partnership came from good old Mr
Reliable Paul Danson (26) and the obdurate Prashant Aga, who
was determined not to be "boxed off" too early.
When these
two departed along with Mercer ( 4) leaving the Seasiders on
120 for 8 requiring almost a run a ball , Fleetwood must have
felt they had the game in the bag.
However, Andy Hogarth and Rick Gleeson had other
ideas. Both batted very sensibly, putting bad balls away and
finding gaps in the field to accumulate singles, as they
gradually narrowed the gap and brought down the required run
rate.
Hogarth batted the best I have seen him bat since
arriving at the club 3 seasons ago and Rick gave him the
invaluable support we all know he is capable of. His innings
of 12 not out proved crucial as Hogarth (31), growing in
confidence took the attack to the tiring Fleetwood bowlers .
With 7 needed from the last over to be bowled by the fiery
Ryan Smith, Hogie hit a straight drive for an enormous 6 and
whacked ball number 2 to the square leg boundary for 4 -----
Blackpool 159 for 8 and 12 valuable points for Danno and the
boys .
Pro Frith was the home team's best bowler with 3 for
45 from 17.
