Pasan
Wanasinghe took seven for 25 as Barrow beat the
weather |
Barrow stole a march on their rivals on a
rain-hit afternoon in the Furness Building Society Northern
Premier Cricket League (incorporating Readers Cricket Balls)
when they were the only side to earn a positive result,
recording their second ten wickets win in successive
weeks.
Daryl Wearing's side moved up to fifth after
overcoming Carnforth while the remaining six games in the
first division were abandoned. It was a similar story in the
second division with all of the six games being abandoned.
Barrow pro Pasan Wanasinghe was the bowling hero
as a below-strength Carnforth side were bowled out for 110 at
Lodge Quarry. The home side, captained by professional Gareth
Pedder, had only five regular first-teamers due to
unavailability issues and suffered a severe blow in midweek
when leading batsman Phil Bovis left the club to return to
Westmorland League side Warton.
Wanasinghe collected 7 for 25 off 17 overs,
trapping Rehman Shah leg-before and clean bowling his other
six victims. Carnforth were rescued from the depths of 39 for
6 by Pedder who put on 63 in a battling seventh wicket stand
with Lee Barnes to take their side to 102 for 6 from 32 overs
when rain stopped play.
When play resumed, with the game
reduced to 39 overs Cumberland bowler Graham Dawson (who took
3 for 29) had Pedder caught behind by Chris D'Leny for a
defiant 41 that included nine boundaries as the last four
wickets fell for the addition of only eight runs.

The in-form Jon Miles led Barrow's victory
charge with an unbeaten 72 that included 11 fours and one six
in partnership with Lancashire Academy member Liam Livingstone
who finished 38 not out. Miles's regular opening partner Greg
Platten was ruled out of the Bank Holiday programme after
sustaining an injury in training during the week.

led Barrow's victory charge |
Miles has now scored 166 runs without being
dismissed in his last two innings. The Cumberland batsman had
one eye on the threatening black clouds and no sooner had
Barrow reached their target after only 20.2 overs the rain
again began to fall.
Leaders Leyland, chasing an eight successive
win, were frustrated by the weather which allowed just four
overs at Fox Lane. Netherfield's deputy captain Chris Parry
inserted the home side when a 30-over contest began at 3-30pm
but the rain returned with Leyland 14 for 2, Ryan Wilson
claiming the wickets of Luis Reece and Tom Foster.
The eagerly awaited Fylde coast derby between
second placed St Annes, the defending champions, and
third-placed Blackpool was abandoned just after 4pm and there
was no play either at Kendal or Preston.
In a rain-affected game at Lune Road Lancashire
Colts made 184 for 7 off their 38 overs against Lancaster with
Cleator batsman/ wicketkeeper Jordan Clark making 43 off 48
balls and Garstang's Mark Walling 41 off 45
balls.
Lancaster were 50 for 2 off only ten overs in reply
when the rains came, Tim Barry having made a rapid 35 off 34
balls. Lancaster captain Michael Stevens missed the game due
to a family wedding but is flying back to play in Monday's
fixture against Morecambe.
Morecambe pro Mandla Mashimbyi took three quick
wickets before his side's game at Broadwater was abandoned
with Fleetwood 39 for 3 after 14.3 overs.
The popular South
African claimed the scalps of Mark Emsley, Mike Clinning and
Chris Stanhope but Fleetwood's professional and captain Matt
Frith stood firm and was unbeaten on 33 when the rain
arrived.

DIVISION TWO
In Division Two leaders Darwen were frustrated
by the weather and their home game against third-placed
Preston was abandoned without a ball being bowled. Second
placed Leyland failed to take the field in their game at
Netherfield and there was no play either at Chorley.
Most progress was made at Woodhill Lane where
Fleetwood captain Matt Clark hit 97 (including 16 fours and
two sixes) in his side's 163 for 5 off 34 overs against
Morecambe. Sam Mckee bowled well to take three for 26 and
skipper Gert Maartens took two for 36 off 15 overs. Morecambe
were 53 for 1 after eight overs with Maartens 34 not out when
play was abandoned.
Morecambe
Second XI captain Gert Maartens was frustrated by the
weather at Woodhill Lane |
Carnforth reached 76 for 5 at Ernest Pass when
their game against Barrow was abandoned.
Popular local
vicar and Third XI captain Father Stephen Jones provided a
sterling example of self denial as opener, anchoring one end
to make 13 off 87 balls, an innings positively cavalier
compared to last season's in the corresponding game when he
made 16 off 122 balls. Parishioners will be able to judge on
Sunday mornings if Father Jones's sermons are as entertaining
as his batting. Left arm spinner Gary Collins had taken three
for 6 off 7.3 overs when play was abandoned.
At Stanley Park Blackpool openers Adrian
Darlington and Nick Wall had struggled their way to 25 for 0
after 15 overs against St Annes when rain stopped play.
