had another fine game for
Chorley |
Leyland reeled off their fourth successive win
in the Furness Building Society Northern Premier Cricket
League (incorporating Readers Cricket Balls) as they defeated
the Lancashire Colts side by two wickets with one ball to
spare in a Bank Holiday thriller at Fox Lane.
James Rounding was the Leyland hero with an
unbeaten 26, surviving a missed chance in the field as he hit
the winning run off Gavin Griffiths as an intense game
finished in the gloaming at ten minutes to eight. Griffiths
had bowled superbly for the Colts taking four for 23 as they
almost protected their total of 171. Leyland's Pakistan sub
professional Agha Sabir, the Ribblesdale Wanderers
professional hit a fine 52 off 81 balls and Andrew Makinson
contributed a vital 38 off 59 balls in the middle
order.
Earlier opener Lewis Jackson top-scored for the
Colts with 45 off 103 balls and wicketkeeper Joe Davies made
31 with Leyland skipper David Makinson, a former Lancashire
County player taking five for 30.
Barrow completed their second victory of the
weekend, defeating Netherfield by four wickets at Ernest Pass.
Netherfield's Australian pro Nick Kruger looked in prime form
until he was brilliantly stumped by Chris D'Leny off Barrow
chairman Ray Mowat for 49. Mowat went on to take four for 52
and with pro Pasan Wanasinghe weighing in with five for 75
Netherfield's total of 178 looked below par on a fine batting
track.
Barrow opener Jon Miles hit 61 off 87 balls to
anchor his side's reply and D'Leny hit a vital 40 off 46 balls
as Netherfield fought hard in the field, Ryan Wilson taking
three for 60 and skipper Marc Hadwin two for 29.
Atiq Uz-Zaman hit an imperious undefeated 135 to
steer the champions St Annes past Darwen's testing 226 for 9
at Vernon Road. The former Pakistan Test player, the league's
leading batsman in each of the last two seasons, faced only
131 balls and hit 13 fours and three sixes.
Pro Dinuka
Hettiarachchi, who had earlier bowled unchanged to collect
five for 87, opened with Atiq but retired hurt with the score
on 29. He resumed with St Annes 124 for 4 and put on 96 with
Atiq in a match-deciding fifth-wicket partnership.
Darwen's
Alex Davies, LCB Young Player of the Year in 2009, top-scored
with 55 off 85 balls and with Niall Burke making 45 and pro
Mohammad Zaman Khan 41 St Annes had to work hard for their
victory after their frustration at being washed out at
Netherfield on Saturday.
Kendal's professional and captain Ross McMillan
produced another superb all-round display as his side
overwhelmed Fleetwood by 189 runs at Shap Road. McMillan hit
107 off 128 balls in his side's 218 for 4, sharing a
third-wicket stand of 171 with Terry Hunte (67). McMillan hit
12 fours and four sixes and then ruined the Fleetwood reply
with a stunning spell of six for six off eight overs. With
Cumberland county off-spinner Chris Miller taking four for 21
Fleetwood subsided to 29 all out, Ryan Smith the only visiting
batsman to reach double figures.
Morecambe's popular South African pro Mandla
Mashimbyi hit his first century for the club but had to settle
for the best of a winning draw against Preston at Woodhill
Lane. Mashimbyi rescued his side from the depths of 54 for 5
in a superb sixth-wicket stand of 131 with Alex
Thistlethwaite, who made 63, his maiden first team half
century. Mashimbyi demonstrated some stunning hitting late in
his innings as he reached an undefeated 130 off 126 balls in
his side's 226 for 6.
Despite an enterprising 53 from
stand-in opener Lukman Vahaluwala and a classy 46 from skipper
Adam Parker, Preston finished well short on 149 for 8.
Mashimbyi took three for 35 and Morecambe skipper Tommy Clough
accounted for Preston's Australian sub-pro Clinton Perrin, the
Littleborough professional, for 16.
Blackpool earned their first win of the campaign
when they defeated Carnforth by 80 runs at Stanley Park. The
consistent John Mounsey hit 64 and Sri Lankan pro Nimesh
Perera 43 in Blackpool's 208 for 8 declared. Last season's
Castle Award winner Warren Quinn returned four wickets for the
visitors in his first appearance of the summer.
Steven
Mercer then took four wickets for Blackpool and Perera a
further three as Carnforth were dismissed for 128, pro Gareth
Pedder top-scoring with 32.
Chorley's South African pro JJ Smuts enjoyed
another fine all round game but the weather ruined a
compelling game at Windsor Park against Mike Stevens'
much-improved Lancaster side. Smuts took four for 38 and
opener Billy Smith three for 45 as Lancaster reached 197 for 9
in 48 overs.
Jamie
Heywood survives an anxious moment against Chorley's
Kieran McCullagh |
Jamie Heywood anchored the innings with a
patient 50 in 40 overs and Tim Barry and pro Roy Silva
provided the fireworks. Barry survived three chances in the
field to hit 51 off 58 balls and Silva hit five fours and four
sixes in making 56 off 38 balls.
Roy Silva
hit a quick 50 for Lancaster |
Two separate rain interruptions cut four overs
off Chorley's reply but as long as Smuts was there they had
hope. But after making 75 off 92 balls Smuts was superbly
caught on the mid wicket boundary by Jamie Heywood off Silva
and with him went Chorley's victory chance. Opener Jack
Catterall battled through 89 balls to make 22 and despite
skipper Andy Holdsworth's 27 Chorley finished just short of a
second batting bonus point.

SECOND DIVISION
Richard Thomas took eight for 35 as St Annes
edged a thrilling game at Birch Hall to ruin Darwen's fine
start to their Second Division campaign. Darwen lost their
last nine wickets for 61 runs after skipper Gary Jackson and
his son Scott had each hit 35. Despite four wickets from
Christian Davies St Annes just got past the post thanks to
Nathan Bolus's undefeated 23 and skipper David Watson's 26.
Blackpool openers Adrian Darlington (93 off 108
balls) and Nanthesh Kiruparan (60 off 87 balls) paved the way
for an 85 runs win over Carnforth at Lodge Quarry with
Blackpool skipper Kevin Reid taking six for 34.
Kendal opener Donovan Du Plessis hit a superb
106 off 96 balls but still finished on the losing side as
Fleetwood overhauled the visitors' 168 all out thanks to
consistent batting down the order including an undefeated 50
from Michael Hale. Neil Gregson took four wickets for
Fleetwood.
Reigning champions Lancaster were defeated at
home to Chorley as Louis Sweeney took four for 7 and James
Daniels three for 5 to bowl out the hosts for 69. Earlier
opener Stu Naden hit 79 in his side's 157 for 8 as Craig
Atkinson took four for 27.
Morecambe chairman Nick Milner took four for 25
off 17 overs to spearhead his side's six wickets win at West
Cliff. Despite a battling 35 from Yasin Patel Preston were
dismissed for 92 and with Michael Fisher scoring 39 Morecambe
won by six wickets.
Barrow's young batsmen contributed to a five
wicket win at Parkside Road. 17-years-old wicketkeeper Tom
Penny hit 51 and Ryan Gilmour (16) hit 34 with the rather more
mature Ian Allington making 31. Rob Lightfoot's undefeated 34
saw the visitors home. Nathan Chambers, batting at number
eight, made 70 off only 40 balls including sine fours and four
sixes as Netherfield recovered from 60 for 6 to reach 181 as
spinner Gary Collins took four for 34.

REPORT BY MICHAEL FISHER
*Preston 2nd XI 92 all out v Morecambe 2nd XI 93 - 4
Morecambe won the toss and decided to bat second
on a wicket which appeared to be very hard, however the first
over showed that playing on the back foot would be fraught
with danger as two balls nearly rolled along the
floor.
Maartens soon accounted for Enaganti and when Ahmed
missed a full toss Preston were in trouble. Only Zubair Patel
showed any real idea how to play on the difficult wicket.
Milner's introduction saw Mohsin Patel back to
the pavilion trapped LBW. Cassidy took two quick wickets
Zubair Patel (23) well caught by Fisher and the dangerous
McDonald beaten all ends up an early finish looked on the
cards.
Yasin Patel and Cairns decided to bat for time and
managed to see out the next 15 overs without really doing too
much damage to the Morecambe's bowler's figures
The final
push to set a challenging total brought the final clatter of
wickets with Milner taking 3 and Graves weighing in with 2
both of which were well caught by Pearson in the covers. Only
Yasin Patel scoring 35 showed any real resistance to the
accurate bowling. Preston's total of 92 of 48.5 overs seemed
to be somewhat short of a challenging total providing
Morecambe batted sensibly.
The visitors reply started disastrously with
both Plackett and Pearson falling to Alam for nought to balls
which kept low. The experienced pair of Maje and Fisher set
about getting required runs, taking the attack to the Preston
bowlers. They took the score in the 40's before Maje (15) was
out attempting an ambitious pull to a ball which bounced not
more than 9 inches of the lively McDonald.
Cockburn joined
Fisher and took Morecambe to within sight of victory, Fisher
(39) fell trying to finish the game in style and attempting to
secure a half century caught on the boundary. Milner then
showed how it should be done by hitting his first ball for
six, Cockburn scored the winning runs to finish with a mature
24 not out as Morecambe gained their first victory of the
season scoring the required 93 for victory in only 19.3 overs.
The returning Maje and Cassidy plus Milner's return from the
1st team provided the additional strength that Morecambe had
been missing during their opening two fixtures.
