captain/pro Ross McMillan catches out Billy Smith to
seal his side's dramatic win |
Leyland maintained their 28-point lead at the
top of the Furness Building Society Northern Premier Cricket
League (incorporating Readers Cricket Balls) after an emphatic
win at Netherfield with second placed Barrow also winning but
defending champions St Annes were beaten by Blackpool in the
Fylde Coast derby.
David Makinson's side have played 20 games and
have 230 points and with five games to go lead Barrow
(20-202), St Annes (20-188) and Darwen (20-171) with Blackpool
(20-157) in fifth.
Luis Reece and Chris Parkinson led Leyland's
victory charge at Parkside Road, posting 154 for the first
wicket before Parkinson was out for 72 to present Ben Haddrick
with a rare wicket. Reece finished unbeaten on 94 off 131
balls as Leyland coasted to a nine wickets win. South African
pro Brett Pelser took seven for 47 to restrict the home side
to 179 for 9, including the key wickets of pro Nick Kruger,
Alex Atkinson and John Huck. Netherfield were 99 for 7 but
Nathan Chambers led a revival with a spirited 37 off 35 balls.
Reece sustained an ankle injury in his fourth over and pulled
out of making his debut for Cumberland as a result.
Barrow kept in contention with a seven wickets
win over Carnforth at Ernest Pass. Pro Pasan Wanasinghe hit an
unbeaten 65 off 77 balls and saw his side home in an unbroken
fourth wicket stand of 96 with Darren Clark who was unbeaten
on 31.
Opener Ryan Nelson grafted to 41 off 92 balls
and skipper Darren Moore hit 46 off 74 balls after recovering
from 'flu. Tom Barnfield was left unbeaten on 32 as Carnforth
declined from 104 for 2 to 161 for 8, Graham Dawson taking
four for 59.
Blackpool enjoyed an eight wickets win over St
Annes at Stanley Park, Steven Croft leading the way with a
superb innings of 94 and John Mounsey remaining unbeaten on
58. The pair posted 155 for the first wicket. Lancashire star
Croft, who had hit centuries in both his previous innings for
Blackpool this summer, was caught on the boundary attempting
to reach his third ton having hit 94 off 118 balls.
Earlier Croft took three for 28 and Richard
Gleeson celebrated his call-up to represent Cumberland against
Suffolk in their key Eastern Division decider against Suffolk
at Sedbergh starting tomorrow (Sunday) with another two
wickets as St Annes were dismissed for 158. Atiq Uz-ZAman was
run out by Andy Furniss for 12 and St Annes slumped to 34 for
3 before Russ Bradley (38) and pro Dinuka Hettiarachchi (32)
led a recovery.
Darwen pro Mohammad Zaman Khan continued his
prolific summer by hitting an unbeaten 115 against Preston at
Birch Hall but had to settle for a draw. In making his third
league century of the season, Zaman Khan hit his runs off 108
balls with 16 fours and three sixes as he closed in on the
1,000 runs chase by reaching 911 for the season in league
games at an average of 53.59.
After successive centuries for Lancashire U17s
Alex Davies made 34 and shared a third wicket stand of 94.
Skipper John Cordingley made a fluent 27 as Darwen reached 218
for 6, Preston captain Lukman Vahaluwala taking four for 47.
In a match reduced to 45 overs after a delayed start Preston
pro Bilal Asad held his side together with 63 off 80 balls
before he was caught off a top edge off Kamran Anwar. In a
tense finish Preston survived, finishing 160 for 8 despite
Zaman Khan taking three for 16.

Morecambe pro Mandla Mashimbyi took four wickets
and hit 67 but his side fought out a draw against Fleetwood at
Woodhill Lane. Fleetwood pro Matthew Frith made 89 off 111
balls to spearhead his side's 212, and despite valuable
contributions from Ikram Ullah (48) and Phil Dennison (33)
Morecambe held on for a draw at 190 for 9 as last pair Reg
Cupit and Graeme Cassidy survived 25 balls between them. Sam
Bell took four for 32 and Frith three for 46.
There was a remarkable game at Windsor Park
where Kendal recorded 15 points despite being bowled out for
79 by Chorley. Billy Smith and sub-pro Gaurav Dhar exploited a
damp pitch superbly to give Andy Holdsworth's side a scent of
a much needed victory.

Chorley |
But Kendal pro Ross McMillan and Cumberland
county off-spinner Chris Miller had other ideas. McMillan
bowled with sustained accuracy and hostility to take four for
23 and Miller overtook Lancaster's Ben Simm in the race for
the Castle Bowling Award with five for 24 as Chorley subsided
to a dismal 56 all out. Miller has taken 49 league wickets
with fellow off-spinner Simm on 46.
