Hettiarachchi celebrates bowling John Denwood to win the
game for St Annes |
Leyland saw their lead at the top of the Furness
Building Society Northern Premier Cricket League
(incorporating Readers Cricket Balls) cut by three points by
chasers Barrow and St Annes despite earning an emphatic win at
Fleetwood.
David Makinson's side dismissed Fleetwood for
just 59 in 37.1 overs at Broadwater, left-arm opening bowler
Luis Reece taking five for 29 and South African professional
Brett Pelser four for 22. Only three home batsmen reached
double figures as Leyland avenged their recent Readers Cup
defeat at Fleetwood's hands. Reece was then the only Leyland
batsman to be dismissed as Chris Parkinson and Henry Thompson
steered their side home to an early finish in 15.5 overs.
But Leyland, who had won the toss and elected to
field earned only 12 points for a win batting second while
Barrow and St Annes had maximum 15 point wins for batting
first. In-form Barrow openers Jonathan Miles (46) and Greg
Platten (43) led the way with a stand of 99 against Morecambe
at Ernest Pass that formed the basis of their 177 for 9.
Morecambe fought back well in the field, pro Mandla Mashimbyi
taking four for 74 and skipper Tommy Clough three for 22 in 13
overs as Barrow lost nine wickets for 78 runs. Barrow pro
Pasan Wanasinghe, back after attending his mother's funeral in
Sri Lanka and skipper Daryl Wearing then tore into Morecambe's
batting, each taking four wickets as the visitors were
dismissed for 112. Mashimbyi provided the main resistance with
an unbeaten 33 off 67 balls.
Defending champions St Annes had Sri Lankan spin
ace Dinuka Hettiarachchi to thank once again for their 76 runs
victory over Carnforth at Vernon Road. The St Annes pro
collected his 12th five wicket haul of the summer and ended
with seven for 26 as Carnforth were dismissed for 94 in a
rain-reduced game. Ben Dowling defied illness to take two
wickets in as many balls and teenager Mitch Bolus, called up
into the side for his debut after Nick Jones was taken ill,
responded with the wicket of Tom Barnfield who was well caught
by skipper Andy Kellett.

Hettiarachchi stole the show with a brilliant
display of the craft of the left arm spinner, varying his
pace, trajectory and flight to telling effect and taking the
crucial wicket of opposing pro Gareth Pedder, caught and
bowled for 28.

After overnight rain reduced the contest to one
of 40 overs per side Kellett and Atiq Uz-Zaman opened with a
stand of 64 before St Annes lost three quick wickets for two
runs. Russ Bradley's superb undefeated 54 off 67 balls enabled
Kellett to declare after 38 overs on 170 for 5. Adam Hornby
captained Carnforth with Darren Moore suffering from 'flu.

Lancaster continued where they left off when
they had the better of a draw at Leyland by defeating in-form
Darwen by two wickets in a low-scoring game at Lune Road. The
home side's Sri Lankan pro Roy Silva defied a hamstring injury
to return seven for 23 as Darwen were dismissed for just 76.
Off-spinner Ben Simm took the other three wickets as Darwen
pro Mohammad Zaman Khan top scored with 35. Despite Chris Wade
and Khan each taking three wickets Lancaster just got over the
finishing line in a tense finish, Silva making 28.
Rain frustrated Kendal's victory bid against
Blackpool at Shap Road. After Terry Hunte continued his fine
recent form with 50 from 66 balls in his side's 148 for 8,
Richard Gleeson taking four for 59, rain then lopped off six
overs from the visitors' reply. Hunte, who batted with a
fluency that was denied to any one else and Kevin Howarth (35)
added 85 for the fourth wicket.
Cumberland county off-spinner Chris Miller took
seven for 52 from 18 overs but skipper Paul Danson steered his
side to safety with an unbeaten 21 off 37 balls at 125 for 8
after opener John Mounsey hit 53 off 130 balls.
There was no play in the game between Preston
and Netherfield at West Cliff. Netherfield and Lancaster have
each suffered five abandonments this season with a total of 19
games falling foul of the weather.
Leyland (played 19-218) have a 28-point lead
over Barrow (19-190) with six games to play. St Annes (19-187)
are still in contention but Darwen (19-162) have slipped
behind. Blackpool (19-145) are in fifth but Lancaster (20-139)
have overtaken Morecambe (19-130) into sixth place.

Match Report by Michael Moore
Kendal v Blackpool
Desperate to return to winning ways, Danno`s
Boys travelled to Shap Road determined to bring back a bagful
of points. But all they really managed to bring home was more
disappointment.
Electing to bowl on a track suited more to
bowling than batting Blackpool`s bowlers struggled once again
to attain any real degree of consistency, bowling both sides
of the wicket thus making survival by the Kendal batsmen a
much easier task. Scoring runs was obviously a difficult task
as at the 15 over mark Kendal had struggled to a paltry 27
without loss. When the visitors` bowlers finally found success
through Andy Hogarth (2 for 23 in 11) and Alex Smith(1 for 8
in 3), Kendal were in trouble at 29 for 3.
However, the experienced pairing of Kevin
Howarth and Terry Hunte set about repairing the damage adding
85 for the 4th wicket with some fine positive batting. But
when Hunte (50) became the first of Gleeson`s 4 victims,
closely followed by Howarth (35),the Shap Road lads stumbled
to a very mediocre total of 148 for 8, Gleeson closing on 4
for 59 in his 21 overs. Steve Mercer also picked up a wicket
to finish with 1 for 29 from his 9 overs. Yet again the
reliable Rob Sissons put in a very impressive performance
behind the stumps and but for his excellent efforts, Danno`s
Boys could have been facing a much bigger total.
The Blackpool lads will no doubt reflect on the
14 wides which were bowled., and their inability to take
advantage of the bowler friendly conditions.
However 148 was never going to be an easy
target, especially as yet again the opposition attack was able
to put the ball in right areas bowling a much tighter line and
length. After 8 overs Danno`s boys had crawled to 5 without
loss as the Blackpool batsmen found difficulty in keeping the
board ticking and their misery was compounded by off spinner
Miller as they slumped to 23 for 4 in 19 overs. The Cumbrian
bowler finished with match figures of 7 for 52 in 18 superb
overs.
Tight bowling at the other end from McMillan and
Jack White complemented Miller`s effort admirably as only
opener John Mounsey, who dug in determinedly for a grafting 53
from 134 balls received was able to combat the rampant Kendal
bowlers
There was a glimmer of hope when middle order
man Andrew Hogarth(21) struck several lusty blows including 2
big sixes off pro McMillan and skipper Danson (21 not out) and
Gleeson (18 from 13 deliveries) mounted a late charge but the
target was just too much for their valiant assault.
Blackpool will be cursing their luck as a rain
interruption in their innings reduced their allotment of overs
to 44. The loss of 6 overs was a significant factor in their
chances of success, especially as under the current rules the
target is not reduced accordingly.
SECOND DIVISION
In Division Two leaders Leyland defeated
Fleetwood by 86 runs at Fox Lane, wrapping up victory before
the weather closed in. Daniel Hall (43 from 77 balls) helped
the home side weather a fine spell of bowling by Neil Gregson
who bowled unchanged to take five for 48 in the total of 151
for 8. Stephen Cartwright then took five for 19 as Fleetwood
were bowled out for 65.
With Chorley inactive Blackpool and Darwen took
advantage to move into second and third place respectively.
Blackpool beat Kendal by 49 runs at Stanley Park, skipper
Kevin Reid taking four for 42 and Ross Parker five for 45 to
dismiss the visitors for 127 despite a fine 68 from Sedbergh
Schoolboy Jono Marshall. Adrian Darlington top scored for
Blackpool with 45 in his side's 176 for 7.
Darwen also earned maximum points after bowling
out defending champions Lancaster for just 45 at Birch Hall,
Andrew Cook continuing his rich vein of form with four for 8.
Earlier father and son partnership Gary Jackson (41) and Scott
Jackson (88) helped Darwen declare on 184 for 3 in a game
reduced to 44 overs per side, the pair adding 125 for the
second wicket. Nathan Jackson, Scott's brother, then took
three for 27 to complete a fine day for the Jackson
family.
Leyland (played 17-185) lead the way from
Blackpool (17-170), Darwen (19-169) and Chorley (18-157).
Elsewhere fifth-placed Preston went down to a
heavy defeat at Netherfield for whom Ryan Wilson returned
after injury to take five wickets and Shane Dixon hit 84. The
redoubtable Manoj Parekh returned to action with six for 62
from 17 overs for Preston.
St Annes won a thriller against bottom club
Carnforth by 18 runs at Lodge Quarry despite Mark Bradley
taking six wickets and earning a run out for the home side.
Jack Todd took four for 14 from ten overs to help dismiss
Carnforth for 131 despite a fighting 39 from Tom O'Brien.
Lakmal Mendis took five wickets for Barrow to
dismiss Morecambe for 116 but Sean Graves then returned five
for 22 as the visitors succumbed to 67 all out in reply.
