Leaders Leyland were outplayed by Lancaster at
Fox Lane and had to settle for a losing draw after another
eventful day's action in the Furness Building Society Northern
Premier Cricket League (incorporating Readers Cricket Balls)
on Sunday.
Lancaster batsmen Roy Silva and Jamie Heywood
played despite hamstring injuries and skipper Michael Stevens
donned the wicketkeeping gloves for the visitors who rattled
up a challenging 235 for 6. Tim Barry (80 off 128 balls) and
Danny Welbourne (51 off 61 balls) opened with a stand of 91,
pro Silva blasted 34 off 22 balls and Kiran Uppour hit 42 off
49 balls with skipper David Makinson and Peter Cummings each
taking two wickets.
Luis Reece and pro Brett Pelser both hit 53 for
Leyland but Pelser was run out by Silva just as he looked
capable of building a match-winning innings while Reece, who
resumed his innings after retiring with cramp, was leg before
to Barry who took three for 22 off 11 overs. Ben Simm bowled
unchanged from the clubhouse end as Leyland salvaged a draw on
183 for 8, Makinson ensuring maximum batting points in the
last over.

Second placed Barrow dominated their game
against Blackpool at Stanley Park but were frustrated by
Steven Mercer as the home side doggedly closed out the game.
Westhoughton's Australian professional Theo Doropoulos
deputised for Pasan Wanasinghe who has flown home to Sri Lanka
to attend his mother's funeral. But it was Cumberland county
openers Jonathan Miles and Greg Platten who stole the show,
posting an opening stand of 171 before Platten was caught by
Nimesh Perera off Alex Smith for 88 off 85 balls. Miles went
on to reach 107 off 118 balls before he was run out by Mike
Tidmas. Miles has now scored 654 league runs and Platten
622.
Barrow's eventual total of 262 for 3 was beyond
Blackpool's compass after they lost their first four wickets
for 38, but Andy Hogarth (23) and Mercer (24 not out) dug in
to salvage a draw as the home side closed on 110 for 8.
Doropoulos took three for 34 off 15 overs with spinner Gary
Collins bowling a miserly spell to take two for 12 from 12
overs and Wearing snaring three for 21.
St Annes returned to winning ways as they bowled
out Kendal for 109 at Vernon Road. Professional Dinuka
Hettiarachchi celebrated his contract extension with his 11th
five-wicket haul of the summer, finishing with six for 43.
Kendal captain/pro Ross
McMillan escapes an edge
|
Kendal were soon on the back foot, losing their
first three wickets for 17 with Paul Wilks running out Gareth
Ashburner, Jack White bowled by the St Annes pro and Kendal
captain/pro Ross McMillan caught behind off Ben Willis. Terry
Hunte was the only Kendal batsman to reach double figures,
making 64 off 65 balls with 11 fours before he caught behind
off Hettiarachchi by Atiq Uz-Zaman, deputising as 'keeper for
the unavailable Duncan Whalley. Nick Phillips battled through
50 balls to add 57 for the fourth wicket with Hunte.

Kendal fought hard in the field, spinner Chris
Miller taking three for 31 but Charles Boucher (35) and Russ
Bradley (30) rescued the home side from 41 for 3 and a five
wickets victory was achieved soon after half past five.
Darwen enjoyed a happy weekend, earning maximum
points on both days. John Cordingley's side followed up their
100 runs win at Morecambe by defeating Fleetwood at Birch
Hall. Opener Jordan Clarke (63 off 141 balls) and Alex Davies
(74 off 120 balls) continued their impressive seasons with
notable batting contributions in a competitive total of 189
for 7, Fleetwood pro Matt Frith taking three for 46. Clarke
and Davies added 122 for the third wicket.
The in-form Kamran Anwar (three for 43) and
Chris Wade (two for 45) then continued their fine bowling
successes before Niall Burke came on as third change to take
four for 11 off five overs as Fleetwood were dismissed for
132. Mark Wilkinson top scored with 40 off 85 balls.
Leyland (played 18-206 points) lead Barrow
(19-175) by 31 points with defending champions St Annes
(18-172) in third. Darwen are fourth (18-160) with Blackpool
fifth (18-142).
Preston secured maximum points despite only
reaching 111 for 8 in their 50 overs against Chorley at West
Cliff. At the midway point Preston were 36 for 2 but skipper
Lukman Vahaluwala defied an injured hand to hit a vital
undefeated 37 off 69 balls after pro Bilal Asad was run out by
Will Moulton for 23. Chorley's sub-pro Hendro Puchert, the
Clifton professional, took one for 31 from 20 overs with
Kieran McCullagh taking three for 42 and Billy Smith two for
16 off 11 overs.
Bilal Asad then combined with Vahaluwala to bowl
Preston to a famous victory, taking five for 40 with the
skipper returning three for 35. Chorley captain Andrew
Holdsworth made a defiant 32 off 82 balls before he was bowled
by Asad as Chorley lost their last four wickets for three runs
to be dismissed for 108. Asad wrapped up the innings by clean
bowling Jimmy Lee and Louis Sweeney after wicketkeeper Charlie
Williams ran out Billy Smith.
Lancashire Colts enjoyed arguably their best
performance since joining the league as they swept to a seven
wickets win at Netherfield. Scott Friend (39), Callum Rowe
(66) and Mark Walling (68 not out) all batted impressively to
overhaul Netherfield's 213.
Pro Nick Kruger top scored for the home side
with 59 before he was caught behind off Tom Foster. Foster,
who recently left Leyland to join Leigh CC was leading the
Colts side in the absence of Jason Swift. Ben Barrow made
46.
Gareth Pedder enjoyed an outstanding all-round
performance to put the skids under his old club Morecambe as
Carnforth secured maximum points for the third time this
season. The Carnforth professional hit an unbeaten 56 in his
side's 139 for 8 at Lodge Quarry and then took four for 45 as
Morecambe were bowled out for 127.
In his second season as club professional Pedder
has now scored 440 runs at 36.67 and taken 36 wickets at
20.06. Morecambe pro Mandla Mashimbyi and skipper Tommy Clough
each took three wickets. Opener Mark Woodhead battled through
132 balls to make 52 for the visitors before he was ninth man
out, caught by Adam Hornby off John Denwood. Denwood and
Darren Nelson supported their professional with three wickets
apiece, Denwood crucially snaring Clough stumped by Tom
Barnfield after he had helped Woodhead in a seventh wicket
stand of 72 to rescue his side from 32 for 6.

Match Report by Michael Moore
Blackpool v Barrow
The sun managed to make a brief appearance to
welcome title chasing Barrow to Stanley Park today, but there
was no sunshine cricket as far as Blackpool were concerned.
Try as I might to pick out any positives from the day it would
be difficult to find much that does not come under the heading
of "third rate".
In one of the worst Blackpool performances of
recent times, Blackpool were overwhelmed by a Barrow side who
played much more positive cricket , enjoyed the game more and
were obviously much hungrier for points than the lacklustre
Seasiders. Exactly why the home boys were so poor is a mystery
to me, but it appeared that some of the players were there
simply because their name was on the team sheet and not
because they wanted to be.
If this is the way things are heading for the
last quarter of the season then any thoughts of cup success or
qualification for next year`s Lancs Cup are a million miles
away. Skipper Danson has a real tough task on his hands if he
is going to raise his side from the depths of Sunday`s
despair.
Put in to bat on a seamer friendly wicket,
openers Platten and Miles made hay while the sun shone as
Blackpool`s bowlers put the ball anywhere except on line and
length. That is not to take anything away from the 2 Cumbrian
batsmen who completely dominated the first half
proceedings.
Their partnership of 171 for the first wicket
was finally brought to a halt when Blackpool pro Nimesh Perera
clung on to a chance from Platten off the bowling of Alex
Smith at extra cover. However by that time the damage had been
done and the completely demopralised looking home team were
fortunate that the visitors only set them a target of 262 to
chase down.....it could have been a lot more!
Platten`s innings of 88 contained eight boundary
fours and three sixes, as he flayed the hapless Blackpool
bowlers to all corners of the ground. His partner Miles went
on to complete an accomplished century (107), including 9
fours and 1 six
Sub pro Theo Doropoulos (22) and Liam
Livingstone (24) further compounded Blackpool`s misery as
Barrow`s innings closed on 262 for 3 from their 50 overs.It
would be kinder not to mention any bowling stats for Danno`s
boys for whom Gleeson and Smith took one wicket apiece, Miles
being run out
The least said about the Blackpool innings the
better, as a constant trail of batsmen trooped to and from the
crease without any real success. Top scorer was the Mighty
Mercer who finished on 24 not out, after earlier surviving a
very confident appeal for a catch behind when he had made only
2.
I should say that the Stanley Park Boys were
fortunate to gain the solitary point they earned from the game
as the finished a wretched 3rd in this 2 horse race.
For Barrow, sub pro Doropoulos took 3 for 34 in
his 15 overs,slow left armer Collins 2 for 12 in 12 and
skipper Daryl Wearing 3 for 21 in 10.
A day to forget , Fellers. See you all at nets

SECOND DIVISION
In Division Two Leyland completed a
maximum-points win over Lancaster at Lune Road to strengthen
their place at the top.
Leyland (played 16-170pts) lead Chorley (18-157)
by 13 points with two games in hand. Blackpool (16-155) are
still in contention, trailing Leyland by just 15 points on
level games played.
Fourth-placed Darwen (18-154) remain in
a challenging position.
Daniel Hall hit 58 in Leyland's 186 for 6 before
the defending champions were dismissed for 151 despite a
superb 76 from opener Naim Kaswar. Leyland were captained by
Ian Farrington, deputising for injured skipper Chris
Dovey.
Chorley had the worst of a draw at home to
Preston, closing on 203 for 8 in reply to the visitors' 210 in
a tense finish.
Andrew Cook collected seven for 11 to lead
Darwen to an 81 runs victory at Broadwater over Fleetwood,
bowling six victims and trapping another leg before.
Harrison Clark hit a superb undefeated 65 to
steer Blackpool to a four wickets win at Barrow. Clark and
skipper Kevin Reid came together at 77 for 6 and combined to
overhaul Barrow's 156 in which Sam Owen took four for 42.
Clark had earlier bowled 23.5 overs to collect three for
69.
Gareth Costin, after taking seven wickets on
Saturday proved his versatility hitting 76 in St Annes'
victory at Kendal while skipper Michael Fisher's unbeaten 85
helped Morecambe to a five wickets win over Carnforth
