Match Day 10th July 2010

Leyland and St Annes both earn 12 point wins

Barrow and Blackpool frustrated by the weather

Leyland opener Luis Reece hits Morecambe pro Mandla Mashimbyi for six on his way to 75 not out

Luis Reece spearheaded another victory for Furness Building Society Northern Premier Cricket League (incorporating Readers Cricket Balls) leaders Leyland as they defeated Morecambe by seven wickets at Fox Lane.

Reece hit an imperious undefeated 75 off 74 balls including ten fours and three sixes as Leyland earned their 12th win in 15 league games this season. Despite being without their unavailable captain David Makinson Leyland made light of their 157 victory target as Karl Cross combined with Reece in a match-winning stand of 83 after the home side had been 74 for 3.
Cross, a century-maker against Carnforth last week, was again in prime form and finished 46 not out off only 35 balls.

Cumberland county wicketkeeper Ikram Ullah had earlier defied the rampant Leyland attack with a magnificent innings of 90 off 133 balls including 15 fours. Ullah, who had opened the innings was last man out, caught behind by Matthew Watkinson off stand-in captain and professional Brett Pelser. Despite Ullah's heroics fifth-placed Morecambe mustered only 156 as Pelser was the pick of the bowlers with four for 51. Peter Cummings claimed three late victims to finish with three for 16 as only two other Morecambe batsmen reached double figures. James Rounding claimed the vital wicket of Morecambe pro Mandla Mashimbyi, caught by Cummings for 17.

Leyland (played 15-174 pts) lead defending champions St Annes (14-142) by 32 points. St Annes made light work of their trip to Windsor Park as Chorley, after winning the toss and batting were dismissed for a dismal 79 and lost by ten wickets for a second week in a row. Openers Atiq Uz-Zaman (45 not out) and skipper Andy Kellett (26 not out) knocked off the target without loss just after four o'clock.

Chorley pro JJ Smuts looked set for a big score until he was adjudged leg before to teenaged Matthew Grindley for 38. Chorley then lost their last eight wickets for 20 runs as St Annes pro Dinuka Hettiarachchi purveyed his slow left arm magic and returned six for 32.

Barrow (14-135) and Blackpool (15-132) were both frustrated by the weather and fell behind the title race after only collecting four points apiece. Barrow's game at Lancaster did start as a 25-over contest but after Lancaster reached 39 for 2 the rain closed in again. Blackpool travelled up to Parkside Road but after heavy morning rain the game against Netherfield was abandoned at 1-30pm.

The remaining two games both produced tight finishes in low-scoring games. Last season's runners-up Preston continued their revival after a disappointing first half of the season, earning their second 15-points win in a row. Professional and captain Bilal Asad, who was ruled out of their Latham Baxendale Twenty20 Cup-tie at Leyland on Thursday with a back spasm showed he had recovered by taking five wickets and effecting two run outs as Kendal, chasing 147 for victory were bowled out for 141. Cumberland county off spinner Chris Miller had earlier taken four for 46 as Preston were dismissed for 146.

Darwen (14-114) are sixth after an even tighter finish against bottom club Carnforth, winning by four runs. Adam Cowperthwaite took six for 67 as Darwen struggled to 130 at Birch Hall, opener Jordan Clarke top-scoring with 37 off 83 balls. Chris Wade tore into the Carnforth middle order with a spell of five for 24 off 13 overs and Kamran Anwar returned four for 33 to add to his vital innings of 23 not out. Anwar grabbed the last wicket to fall to leave Carnforth captain Darren Moore stranded on 21 not out as the visitors closed 126 all out.

SECOND DIVISION

In Division Two Chorley (14-133) regained the leadership despite being frustrated by St Annes in a drawn, rain-affected game at Vernon Road. Richard Thomas took seven for 45 as Chorley reached 144 for 9 and despite Matt Parry's six wicket haul St Annes hung on at 113 for 8.

Barrow's home against Lancaster was also ruined by the weather and there was no play between Kendal and Preston at Shap Road,
